Caro Emerald
In 2007, then-unknown Dutch singer Caro Emerald received a phone call from producers David Schreurs and Jan van Wieringen, who had written a song with Canadian songwriter Vince Degiorgio. When their original demo singer wasn't available to record the vocals, they asked Caro to step in and record 'Back It Up'. When she performed the song on a local TV station in Amsterdam, it exploded, causing viewers to begin a non-stop calling frenzy and e-mailing about that mysterious girl and her catchy song. A home-made video on YouTube had a similarly overwhelming response, and was spreading worldwide. People literally started begging to put the song up for sale. She was a secret no more. With only one song in her repertoire, David, Vince, Jan and Caro decided to record a full album first. "Back It Up," with its xylophone-infused tropical Americano sound and contemporary production became the template for the album. Inspired by films and music from the 40's and 50's, the team worked for 18 months to create an entirely distinctive sound. The result: Deleted Scenes From The Cutting Room Floor, an exciting collection of 12 original songs that created Caro's signature sound. Deleted Scenes features everything from ballroom jazz to cinematic tangos, groovin' jazz tracks and infectious mambos that sound like they were recorded in 1951 in Hollywood's most famous recording studios. Fusing it with smoking beats, the catchy songs and inventive production presented Caro in a light that has become a present-day phenomenon. Bypassing the many suitors who came calling for Miss Emerald, the production team then gave birth to Grandmono Records, a distinctive record label with flashes of the golden era of the music biz. "Back It Up" was the first release, and spent five months in the Dutch airplay top 20. It was the kick starter for the follow up "A Night Like This," the #1 hit that made Caro a true star. Grandmono finally released the much anticipated album January 2010. It entered at #1 and stayed there for 30 non-consecutive weeks, breaking the previous 26 week record, set in 1983 by Michael Jackson's Thriller. The unprecedented local success of the album soon paved the way for the rest of Europe, with great chart and airplay success. Deleted Scenes was released all over Europe, and has reached certified platinum in the UK and Germany, triple platinum in Poland and six times platinum in Holland. With over 1.000.000 albums sold so far, the release is IFPI certified European Platinum, and Caro entered the Top 5 of most successful female artists in Europe, among the likes of Adele, Lady Gaga, Beyonce and the late Amy Winehouse. The album has spent nine weeks in the British top 10, peaking at #4. In Germany, the album went Top 5. Caro performed on prestigious TV shows, including Jools Holland's Hootenanny, Strictly Come Dancing and BBC's Children In Need and the Echo Awards 2012. With her band, she performed on major stages all over Europe and did quickly sold out her UK tour in March 2012. She has dominated the German music scene, with a big live tour in 2011, a Golden Camera Award for 'Best Music International', and the prestigious Echo Award 2012 for 'Best Newcomer International', beating the likes of Lana Del Rey, Gotye and others. www.caroemerald.com |
