The 1st annual Worldwide Radio Summit, which will take place April 29-30, 2011 at the W Hotel in Hollywood, is garnering some early key support and participation from the radio industry from around the globe. UK FEMALE ARTISTS SHINE IN LOS ANGELES

The UK market is sure to see a strong 2011 for its rising female stars, as Los Angeles was treated to stellar performances by England’s multi-million selling artist Duffy and newcomer Jessie J, who is sure to be one of the biggest new stars in recent memory since the emergence of Lady Gaga.

A&R Worldwide was invited by David Massey President Mercury/Island Records and his team to see the private performance from multi-Platinum UK sensation Duffy in West Hollywood last week as she shared songs from her new album. Duffy’s new full-length is sure to follow the success of her first album, Rockferry. She captivated the audience with her brilliant songs and performance as well as her hypnotizing voice, which received a well-deserved standing ovation. The debut US single, “Endlessly,” is sure to garner continued success for this talented Welsh-born star.

DUFFY IMPRESSES IN LOS ANGELES: British singer Duffy enjoyed a full house in LA as she performed a brilliant set showcasing new musical gems from her sophomore album. DUFFY HITS THE RIGHT NOTES to a very impressed audience during her show in Los Angeles last week. Duffy performs her debut US single, “Endlessly,” to an energized group of fans and industry in Southern California.

Also performing a long-overdue gig in Los Angeles last week was the incredibly gifted newcomer Jessie J, who was signed by Jason Flom, President Lava Records last year. Jessie J certainly doesn’t need any hype, as her natural talent has won over fans instantly on both sides of the Atlantic who have had the privilege of seeing this remarkably talented singer/songwriter.

Jessie J has one of the most incredible voices on the planet and it was great to see that this Essex, England-born lass has gotten even stronger since her magical performance in front of the international music community at MUSEXPO in Los Angeles back in April 2009. It was no surprise to see huge smiles from Jason Flom and Jessie J’s manager Sarah Stennett at the end of Jessie J’s performance as they know they have the very special type of artist we only come across once every decade in this talented young lady.

HAGENBURG MANAGEMENT SIGNS ACE OF BASE



Petri H. Lundén at artist-management company Hagenburg has signed an exclusive management agreement with the third biggest Swedish pop band ever, Ace of Base, which still holds the world record in “Guinness Book of Records” for their debut album, Happy Nation/The Sign, which sold over 23 million copies worldwide and was certified nine times Platinum in the US.

“Tough figure to crack considering the climate for recorded music out there now, but with over 60 million fans that have bought an Ace of Base record at some point I look forward to be part of rebuilding Ace of Base back to the top where they belong,” says Petri H. Lundén, who is also managing (amongst others) The Cardigans and Europe.

“We were searching for a manager for over three years in Los Angeles, New York and England but no one we met felt 100% right. However, during this search we received many recommendations from all corners of the world that said meet Petri Lundén, so we got together with him in Gothenburg. One meeting was enough to realize that we hit the right guy. Petri meets all the criteria we could ask for and more. He has the contacts, experience and we share the same vision,” says Ulf Ekberg of Ace of Base.

Ace of Base are currently promoting their current release, The Golden Ratio (Universal), which is their fifth full-length album and will be followed by a world tour in 2011.


COOKING VINYL SIGNS MARILYN MANSON



Leading UK independent label Cooking Vinyl has signed Marilyn Manson. Having already sold over 50 million records worldwide, Cooking Vinyl overcame fierce competition from several labels in the US and UK, both major and independent, to release what will be Marilyn Manson’s eighth studio album. The global deal will see the album issued via Marilyn Manson’s own label – Hell, etc. – in a joint venture with Cooking Vinyl, with the album slated for release in 2011.

The new partnership with Cooking Vinyl gives Marilyn Manson an unprecedented degree of creative control. The new setup will see the artist take charge of delivering the completed, mastered album and Cooking Vinyl handling worldwide distribution, marketing and promotion.

Known for his originality and style, not only in the studio and on stage but also in his elaborate video and thought-provoking film-making, the latest studio instalment will again pair up Manson and Twiggy Ramirez.

Manson stated, “We will always be our worst audience, until we stop being an audience and start being an artist. Any art is flesh and blood, no matter how you perform, decorate or display it. But we all want the passionate horror of that blood. And blood is what I am here to bring.”

The deal is a landmark signing for Cooking Vinyl and follows the company’s huge commercial success with The Prodigy, whose Invaders Must Die was the best-selling independent release in the UK and Europe in 2009.

Cooking Vinyl founder Martin Goldschmidt told A&R Worldwide, “We’re delighted to welcome Marilyn Manson to Cooking Vinyl. Often our ‘relaxed’ approach to A&R brings out killer performances and albums from artists. I can’t wait to hear what Manson comes up with. This is a landmark signing for us. We shook up folk music in the late 80s/90s with Michelle Shocked, Cowboy Junkies and Billy Bragg, we have shaken up dance in the last couple of years with The Prodigy, Groove Armada and Underworld, and we are ready for a new adventure with Mr. Manson.”

Marilyn Manson has enjoyed success across the globe with numerous sales awards, including three albums being certified Platinum and three more certified Gold in the USA, in addition to three Top 10 albums and two No.1 albums (Mechanical Animals and The Golden Age of Grotesque).

Originally signed to Nothing Records, a subsidiary of Interscope Records, they released the studio albums Portrait of an American Family (1994), Smells Like Children (1995), Antichrist Superstar (1996), Mechanical Animals (1998), Holywood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death) (2000), The Golden Age of Grotesque (2003), Lest We Forget: Best Of (2004), Eat Me, Drink Me (2007) and The High End of Low (2009).

News Corp has endured another huge loss with its MySpace division, with losses growing from $30 million last year to a $156 million loss so far this year. Chase Carey, COO, News Corp stated, “We’ve been clear that MySpace is a problem and we need to redefine and rebuild this business. We have made adjustments in the cost structure and, most importantly in the last few weeks, we’ve re-launched MySpace with a focus on social entertainment.” Carey added that the “current losses are not acceptable or sustainable.” With content owners and creators driving more of its audience to its own destination points (that they own and control), the MySpace problem could be a sign of things to come for technology companies that own nothing other than the technology itself.

Warner/Chappell Music has named Ron Broitman as the Senior VP, Head of Synchronization. Broitman recently served as Senior VP of film, TV and advertising at Sony/ATV Music Publishing from 2006 to 2010 and previously spent 10 years at BMG Music Publishing, most recently as VP film, TV and advertising Music. Based in Los Angeles, Broitman will oversee the Warner/Chappell’s film and TV, commercial, video and video game creative, quoting and clearance, and licensing areas.

Queen and Universal Music Group have signed an exclusive, long-term agreement on the eve of the 40th anniversary of the groundbreaking group’s formation, in 1971.With worldwide album sales of more than 170 million, No. 1 albums, singles and DVDs the world over, inductions into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, over 700 concerts performed in every corner of the world including their historic appearance at Live Aid, and a Guinness Book of World Records award for the most successful UK album chart act in history, Queen represent one of the most remarkable, compelling stories in popular culture. The new agreement with Universal Music covers the world outside North America, and the music of Queen will appear through Island Records from January 1, 2011. Brian May of Queen said, “We are very excited, after all this time, to be embarking on a new phase of our career – with a new record company – with new ideas, and new dreams.” Universal Music Group (UMG) co-CEO Lucian Grainge said added, “Queen rewrote the rock & roll rule book 40 years ago, and you can count at least three generations of artists who are under their influence. EMI Label Services has announced it is once again bringing metal to the masses with an extensive new retail program known as ‘The Metal Crew.’ This will include online, retail and consumer components aimed at spreading the word about some of EMI’s heaviest metal acts. The campaign will work with retail to create ongoing discounts, official seal of approval stickers and better placement for their legendary list of metal labels including: Century Media, Nuclear Blast, Earache and Candlelight along with Season of Mist, Willowtip and Crash Music. In addition to the retail elements, The Metal Crew will have an interactive web home for fans and industry alike. Metal heads will be encouraged to visit the website for news and reviews about upcoming releases, behind the scenes footage of some of metal’s top artists and a comprehensive look at all things metal for each month – including a list of where you can buy new metal releases.

Ute Fesquet
Ute Fesquet has been appointed Vice President, Artists & Repertoire for Deutsche Grammophon, one of the world’s leading classical music labels. The appointment was announced last week by Frank Briegmann, President, Universal Music Germany, Switzerland, Austria & Deutsche Grammophon and by Michael Lang, President, Deutsche Grammophon, to whom Ms. Fesquet reports. A cellist with a background as a journalist and musicologist who has been with Deutsche Grammophon since 1997, Ms. Fesquet in her new post will head the label’s artists & repertoire department, signing artists, strengthening and expanding its A&R team, and developing the company’s unique roster of superstars and new talent.

Polydor UK has announced the promotion of Ross Anderson to Creative Director at the label. Previously, Anderson was overseeing the video department for Polydor

Universal Music Publishing Group has announced the signing of songwriter Leon Russell to a worldwide co-publishing deal for The Union. The album is a collaboration with Elton John (also a UMPG writer) and songwriter Bernie Taupin.

Live Nation Entertainment’s head of its concert business Jason Garner has parted ways with the world’s largest concert promoter, according to a regulatory document filed on Wednesday. Garner, who was chief executive of Live Nation Worldwide, left the company last Friday.
