ZACH HOROWITZ NAMED CHAIRMAN & CEO UNIVERSAL MUSIC PUBLISHING GROUP

Zach Horowitz
Universal Music Group (UMG) has named Zach Horowitz to Chairman and CEO of Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) Worldwide, it was announced by Lucian Grainge, Chairman and CEO of UMG, to whom he will report. Formerly, Mr. Horowitz served as UMG’s President and Chief Operating Officer. In this new role, Mr. Horowitz will concentrate full-time on leading UMPG globally, overseeing more than 40 companies around the world, as well as Rondor Music and Universal Publishing Production Music, the world’s largest production music library.

“Zach’s appointment to lead UMPG is testament to how important publishing is to my plans for UMG’s future,” stated Mr. Grainge. “Having started my own career in music publishing, I know firsthand what it takes to expand the playing field for our songwriters and composers on a global basis. And I couldn’t be more delighted that Zach has agreed to take on this vital role at our company. For nearly two decades, he has championed the interests of our publishing company and been the key architect of its growth. Now I want him to concentrate full time on maximizing UMPG’s true potential in this challenging marketplace.”

“I take great pride in having helped UMPG become the industry leader,” commented Mr. Horowitz. “Lucian’s mandate is to build on our strong foundation, committing all necessary resources to innovate, acquire, expand and lead. Having worked with Lucian for over a decade now, I know how dedicated he is to this objective. The challenges and opportunities facing songwriters and publishing companies have never been more significant. From initiating new ways to super-serve our writers so the return on their creativity is maximized, to proactively empowering new partners and business models so the full potential of the digital revolution is realized, this is a transformational moment in the history of music publishing. I’m thrilled to be chosen to lead UMPG at this exciting time.”

Mr. Horowitz will continue to supervise UMG’s government relations and public policy activities. He will also continue to serve on UMG’s Management Board, as well as on the board of Vevo, the premium music video and entertainment service, a joint venture with Sony Music and the Abu Dhabi Media Group.

As President and COO of UMG, Mr. Horowitz was instrumental in transforming sixth-place MCA Music into the world’s number one music company. He played a leading role in the acquisition, integration and management of Geffen Records, Interscope Records, Univision’s Fonovisa and Disa labels (which made UMG the market leader in Latin music) and PolyGram Holding, Inc. — which brought UMG the Def Jam, Island, A&M, Motown and Deutsche Grammophon record labels. He served as one of the four-person Integration Team responsible for planning the highly successful acquisition and merger of PolyGram into UMG. In publishing, he spearheaded the acquisitions and integrations of Rondor Music (then the industry’s leading independent music publishing company), PolyGram’s music publishing interests, and BMG Music Publishing, which made UMG one of the leading music publishing companies in the world.

BMG ANNOUNCES RELEASE OF RAMONES SOLO ALBUM

325
Joey Ramone
BMG has scooped the worldwide rights to an unreleased posthumous solo album from former Ramones frontman Joey Ramone, who died 11 years ago aged 49.

The 15 track album “…ya know?” will be preceded on April 21 by a limited-edition 7” vinyl for lead track "Rock 'N Roll Is the Answer" produced exclusively for Record Store Day, the annual celebration of independent record stores.

The album is being released in 20 countries worldwide in the biggest demonstration, yet of BMG’s commitment to releasing master recordings as a complement to its core rights management and music publishing business.

The Ramones were named among Rolling Stone’s 50 Greatest Artists of All Time and Mojo’s 100 Greatest Albums. In 2002 – the same year they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – the Ramones were ranked No.2 in Spin’s 50 Greatest Bands Of All Time, second only to The Beatles.

BMG Chrysalis US Vice-President, Masters, Jason Hradil said, “Joey Ramone was one of the key figures in a musical revolution whose impact is still being felt today. We are honored that Joey’s brother Mickey and his estate have entrusted this album to BMG.”

“…ya know?” will be released in the US on May 22, in Continental Europe on May 25 and in the UK on May 28.

The album represents the very best of recordings Ramone left behind on his death which were later assembled by his brother Mickey Leigh, manager Dave Frey and trusted producer Ed Stasium. It features contributions from a stellar cast of Ramone’s friends and collaborators, including Joan Jett, Little Steven Van Zandt, former Ramones drummer Richie Ramone, Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick, Dennis Diken of the Smithereens, Patti Smith Group guitarist Lenny Kaye and members of the Ramones' punk-era contemporaries The Dictators.

The Joey Ramone deal marks the latest development in BMG’s plan to double its business in master recordings. The company has already announced that it will release One Day I’m Going To Soar, the first album from legendary UK soul band Dexys, since 1985, on June 4.

AN INTERVIEW WITH SNAPSTARLIVE’S CEO

NAME: Chris Cameron
TITLE: Co-founder & CEO
COMPANY: SnapStarLive (www.snapstarlive.com)
LOCATION: New Zealand, Australia & USA

Q: Give us a description of SnapStarLive. (Click HERE for EPK)

It’s a professionally produced, content driven social networking platform focusing on live entertainment participation – accessed and distributed live online and mobile app. You build your own social profile by locating a picture of yourself at the event you attended and tagging it, to also share over the social networks of your choice.

We have a commercial model, with gamification and we get access to things that the average person doesn't and our professional photographers get these shots. Our version of members contributions will focus on ‘entertainment niche’ and in a community that is cool, not full of flowers and landscapes and random subjects, rather photos at amazing events.

Soon to be underscored by user generated content, but always headlined by high volumes of professional content routinely produced from live events, clubs, concerts, festivals and showcases.

Q: What is the purpose of SnapStarLive?

The purpose is to build your place on the social ladder – as a person, socialite, venue, entertainer, entertainment property or brand. It promotes relationship value between people with an active interest in entertainment, the entertainers, the venues, features and brands that operate in the space.

Q: Describe your target audience and who you are marketing to.

The concept of celebrity has evolved. People are famous for being famous. From a social perspective there’s obsession with the reality star. Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian and even Snooki from ‘The Jersey Shore’ are all known for nothing more than being famous for being famous. SnapStarLive levels the playing field and leverages the power of social networking to create fame, while simultaneously creating brand equity as an extension of people and their identities – all made possible by the public’s desire, and their pursuit of popularity. While Facebook is an online social network featuring everyone from parents, teachers, bosses and ‘couch potatoes,’ SnapStarLive is a showcase of your real life with social credibility, amounting to a massive online popularity contest. You can’t get your 15 minutes of fame on Facebook, whereas SnapStarLive will make you a Star. SnapStarLive identifies who is truly popular, and in turn who in turn becomes a celebrity. We spot, identify and market our ‘Snap Stars,’ which can make anyone popular in the same vein of a Snooki or Tila Tequila. By showcasing people and artists attending events, concerts, festivals and venues, the system builds and accumulates a substantial reservoir of material that brands can leverage. Meta-data attached to each photograph is analyzed to follow trends and predict market behavior. Through data subscriptions, brand managers will better identify the relevance and effectiveness of brand sponsorships, promotions and endorsements. As a person or brand, through any level of involvement, SnapStarLive provides the means to build social status and identify with real sources of popularity. It associates what people actually do with what they aspire to become.

Q: What makes SnapStarLive compelling and what is its advantage?

The brand experience is psychology driven. A combination of contributing factors makes this product very difficult to replicate. Any one aspect relies on the other to be effective, including the technology platform(s), the systemized infrastructure of field operations and the level of stakeholder relationships secured throughout the industry. Piloted in two foreign markets for two years before its proper activation and deployment in the US, the product benefits from first to market advantage with an ready appetite already established throughout the entertainment industry at the highest of levels.

Q: What is your market proposition?

Unleash your celebrity.

Q: How about your brand proposition?

It’s all about you. The places you go to and how you’re seen, what you like, whom you’re with, how you like to be entertained and how you perform. From one moment to the next, morning, noon and night, see the action unfold, gain better access and reap the rewards. No matter who you are, you’ll shine.

Q: How will this work commercially?

Brands and marketers will be able to reach market cluster groups who are typically elusive, accurately and immediately through real time meta data. This will improve path to market efficiency and support brand interest and loyalty by promoting advocates. Venues can promote active participation visibly, routinely and extensively in a way that brings public and entertainment group interests together. This will feed anticipation, currency and loyalty endeavors.

Q: What expertise will management bring with the product?

The two co-founders have complimentary skills – technology and marketing. Technology expertise has enabled the platform to be built on an unencumbered basis, in house, now outsourced to optimize market traction. COO, Clynton Blacklaws, has always been self-employed as web developer.

Marketing expertise ensures the brand and product propositions resonate with market interest on various critical levels. CEO, Chris Cameron, has been a self-employed entrepreneur for 5 years after an accomplished career as a marketing strategist, writer, producer and regional head of 3 international advertising agencies.

Q: How will this service or product make a profit?

Brand advertiser / sponsorship alignments – packaged according to specific areas of enablement, event participation and relevance given the that platform remains agnostic. Affiliate revenue share from any partner organization that commercially leverages the platform for sales – e.g. ticketing, merchandising, shop on line, etc.

There is also white label licensing – where the destination value of SnapStarLive is complimented and not undermined, where subdivisions of activity are syndicated and still hosted by the platform. We will have both consumer subscriptions for in app purchases including previews and commercial subscriptions to 'dash board' access to buyer behavior metadata.

Q: Recently, Facebook acquired Instagram for a reported $1 billion. What are your thoughts on this?

Facebook understands the power of photo image sharing. And again, like timeline. Is grasping at properties to retrofit the gaps in its offering – featuring a prolific range of material driven by no particular commercial purpose! Our brand(s) - SnapStarLive and www.snapstarlive.com focuses on the shape and behavior of the entertainment industry, where purpose and direction of the platform is commercially driven by user engagement and participation. SnapStarLive encourages people to attend events and rewards them for doing so, in large volumes and exceptional quality.

The bottom line is SnapStarLive is about show business. Facebook is about mathematics.

A&R WORLDWIDE’S "ARTIST OF THE WEEK" – KIDFORCE

KIDFORCE is the brainchild of Rhett Raha, who started performing in a hard rock band at age 14, began writing and recording by 15 and played his first gig at the same age, where he won a “Battle of the Bands” at B.B. King’s at Universal CityWalk, in Los Angeles. When he was 19 years-old he dropped out of school to pursue music as a career with his band Kid Force; they were offered recording deals but declined them. They recorded an EP on the sly that garnered a thousand downloads over eight months and began gigging with acts such as Far East Movement, Shwayze, The Knux and Trouble Andrew, who approached them to remix his song “Chase Money,” which made it on Fuel TV's Elektro Circus snowboarding commercial in 2010. A chance meeting in Hollywood with Euro-pop band The Black Pony led to a swift collaboration with guitarist Eugene Flitner. The resulting song, “Crush,” made the band’s album and was a hit on their “Crush Tour 2011.” By the summer of 2011 the other members had left Kid Force, so Rhett appropriated the name KIDFORCE for himself. Now as a solo artist, he completed his debut release, Doom Box EP, with Fingazz (Snoop Dogg, Beyonce, Gwen Stefani) behind the boards and is starting to receive attention with the lead single, “Brunettes (Do It Better).” KIDFORCE has also been keeping busy in the studio working on remixes for other artists, which have been kept under wraps but will be revealed soon. He recently signed a label deal with the newly launched Slice Me Nice label and will be doing a number of upcoming shows in LA. KIDFORCE is available for licensing booking and synch representation. To listen to his single, “Brunettes (Do It Better),” click HERE, or log on to www.kidforce.net.

A&R WORLDWIDE’S "VIDEO OF THE WEEK" – DAYSTAR

Daystar, a UK Indie Rock quintet, have made quite the impression in a short amount of time. Hailing from Wynthenshawe, a city south of Manchester, the band is composed of frontman Simon Monaghan joined by Steven Woods on bass, Ryan Arnfield on lead guitar, Tom Mallas on drums and Sam Bugajski on rhythm guitar. Their first live gig was in March 2010 and since then, Daystar have become regulars on the ESPN show, Talk of the Terrace, where they performed their debut single, “Slip and Dive,” and its follow-up, “Off Our Heads.” The second single quickly became a staple on sound systems throughout football stadiums across the UK, including nine Premier League Clubs. The song also helped demand attention at radio, receiving support from BBC Radio 2, Radio 6, Q Radio and a host of BBC stations as well as independent outlets from the UK to the U.S. The latest single from the Ronnie Stone-produced, self-titled album may not have a football-feel to it, but is getting people to continue to talk about the band because of the video. The clip to “Sleeper” features the lovable online hero, Wincent Wespa, the 60s-style Mod who journeys through life on a scooter. The character was created by Lee Bamsey from Locomotion and Steve Gurr who are responsible for the video. View the adventure here, while enjoying “Sleeper” by Daystar.
