Prashan Agarwal
Gaana, one of India and South East Asia’s largest streaming services, which currently boasts over 50 million subscribers, makes no secret that it has global ambitions. Its COO Prashan Agarwal will be speaking exclusively in North America in a few weeks from now at MUSEXPO in Los Angeles and will unveil the company’s international aspirations.

A&R Worldwide newsletter readers get a sneak peek into the world’s fastest growing economy and one of its leading streaming services with global ambitions from its COO Prashan Agarwal.

What is your overall view on the Indian music landscape as it has evolved considerably in recent years?

The music landscape is undergoing rapid transformation from a delivery and consumptions perspective. India has bypassed digital song and album buying to leapfrog straight to online streaming - just like we almost hopped over 3G to embrace 4G. Explosion of smartphones and high-speed internet along with multiple streaming services are making music both available and accessible. India, being a young country, is showing higher propensity for everything digital and music is no different. Instant gratification is what they seek and music on fingertips is what they get. Movies continue to be a pre-dominant source of content and labels power the rich and thriving content ecosystem. What has not changed is the piracy. Concerted effort to block piracy is still missing despite multiple free services being available. Search engines and ISPs need to do more to curb this unabated menace that plagues the industry.

How has streaming impacted music and culture in India and Asia?

Music reflects culture and always has had a profound impact on any society since ages. Today’s times are no different. One important aspect is that it speeds up digital eco-system as entertainment is one of the first use cases for smartphones. It increases both affinity and adoption of digital, which in turn impact society and culture in diverse ways. Streaming music also creates massive opportunity for the personalization and social music ecosystem that Gaana is working on. Additionally, trends like EDM pickup faster and new hits spread quicker through users. This is, in part, aided by instant availability of all music as soon as it is released. Streaming is also making people more cognizant of quality of music as they experience HD music on their high-end devices. It is also giving access to unique content, like Rabindra Sangeet, on fingertips and thus enriching culture across the country.

What differentiates Gaana from other streaming platforms?

We are very focused on creating frictionless experiences in an Indian context where language and technology learning curve barriers exist. Gaana has an edge over other platforms both in content and features. We have Radio Mirchi - India’s leading FM radio channel, Gaana Specials - our programs with leading music personalities like Asha Bhonsle, Shankar Mahadevan and others, and curated playlists and radios powered by a seasoned editorial team with decades of experience. In terms of existing features, we offer day/night theme, a transliterated app experience in nine (9) Indian languages, scheduled downloads to help users make the most of their data, auto bit rate to optimize quality in low bandwidth situations, personalized content based on user’s listening experiences, and contextual notifications like yoga, devotional, and meditation playlists in the morning. We will continue to extend our advantage with the launch of a social product and an increasingly richer personalization powered by machine learning and audio fingerprinting. We also are at the leading edge of technologies by integrating with other platforms like Android Auto, Amazon Fire TV etc. and multiple others are in the works.

How does Gaana stay competitive against other regional and multi-national platforms?

Gaana stays ahead of the pack through strong focus on personalization, deploying cutting edge technologies to deliver a joyful experience, and relentless focus on cutting down friction for our users. Latest case in point is the Gaana Social, and voice command plus transliterated search we will be launching soon. Indian users are different, their music consumption habits are different, and their challenges are different. We have great understanding of Indian nuances at Gaana and we continue to invest strongly in content curation, product and technology to convert that knowledge into market leadership.

Common to the conversation of streaming is whether or not it’s benefitting artists financially. With a platform like Gaana, the visibility and audience reach is significant which carries its own value but has the service also provided an economic upside to artists and their teams?

In India, labels own the music content and they pay the artists for the performances. Visibility and audience definitely elevates the stardom of individual artists and it has multiple-trickle down benefits for both labels and artists. For instance, it could lead to higher ticket prices and full houses on tours and live performances.

Many streaming services have started to enter the world of rights ownership in return for providing immense audience/promotion to the value chain. Is this something Gaana has explored or will explore?

We work in close partnership with labels and will continue to do the same way. Our strengths are content curation, product, and technology. That’s what we compete and thrive on.

As part of Times Group, you have the backing/resources of a significant media outlet that has a very diverse portfolio of touch-points to consumers. Does this impact Gaana at all directly/indirectly and if so, how?

Our association with Radio Mirchi and strong editorial capabilities are because of TIL. We work closely with Times Internet’s central team and actively receive support in tech and other core capability areas. We also are partnering with other Times properties - both physical and digital - to propel Gaana’s growth trajectory. For instance, we recently launched the Gaana music widget on Times of India where we serve Gaana of the Day. This definitely helps us to be where our users are.

For the West, there has been a lot discussed about the enormous opportunity to delve into the burgeoning Indian music, entertainment, digital and mobile market. India is the world’s fastest growing economy, largest population of English speaking people, biggest group of Millennials. What are some of the key opportunities for creative and business minds to participate with the true opportunities in India and how can Gaana help?

Getting a billion people to stream music is truest opportunity right now. Additionally, Indian music is a hit - not just in India but worldwide and international music is more palatable to Indians. We have seen plenty of innovation on music consumption happen in the west. Some of those ideas can potentially be replicated in India to make music more exciting and relevant for the today’s young generation and digital natives coming into main consumption stream.

(You can learn more about Gaana and the overall India market during the special MUSEXPO Los Angeles - “Spotlight On India” on Tuesday, May 2nd at the W Hotel in Hollywood)

MUSEXPO’s 2017 edition will also welcome a special focus on India as it has confirmed participation from some of the region’s most forward-thinking and innovative executives.

India continues to be one of the world’s fastest growing and viable economies and is poised for significant expansion in the music, digital, streaming, live, synch and artist sponsorship sectors in the coming years. India is also the largest English language speaking country on Earth, boasts the biggest population of millennials and is rapidly evolving into an important territory of future opportunities for the international music business. MUSEXPO delegates will get rare face-to-face time with some of India’s leading music-related companies vested in copyrights, live, mobile, digital, streaming, brand engagement, media and more, ats they share their insight on how Western music businesses can enhance their opportunities on one of the planet’s fastest developing markets of opportunity.

The Fair Play Fair Pay Act has been re-introduced to U.S. Congress by a bipartisan group calling for terrestrial AM/FM radio stations to pay royalties on sound recordings. At present, these rights are only paid for by non-interactive streaming services such as Pandora and SiriusXM to record labels and performers via SoundExchange. The bill’s sponsors state that the act would put AM/FM radio and Internet and satellite platforms who already pay performance royalties on equal ground and see music creators receiving fair pay for AM/FM radio performances of their work for the first time. The act would also bring consistency to the platform, seeing fair pay for music performances across all forms of radio, no matter what technology is used, while ensuring that terrestrial royalties remain affordable, with a cap of $500 per year (and $100 per year for non-comms) for stations with less than $1 million in annual revenue and no royalties required for religious and incidental uses of music. The bill would also provide protection for songwriters and publishers, clearing defining that it cannot be used to decrease songwriting royalties and provide additional structure and efficiency to the process of royalty payments made to music producers.
