MUSEXPO 2017 IN LOS ANGELES DELIVERS ANOTHER INSPIRING YEAR
OF CREATIVE AND COMMERCIAL INSIGHT



The global music industry’s annual business conference and showcase event MUSEXPO concluded last week in Los Angeles with phenomenal feedback and reaction from the international music community in attendance on its newly-reimagined program. The event continues to be regarded by industry leaders as one of the most important annual gatherings for those truly vested in the global music business and offers some of the best creative and business interaction, opportunities and networking for its attendees from around the world.

As MUSEXPO remains focused and boutique in size, the impact for those attending the event continues to be substantial. MUSEXPO’s highly-effective and focused networking environment draws some of the most influential global architects of today and tomorrow’s music business, as well as those with a connection to all things music, be it via live, media, radio, streaming, mobile, A&R, publishing, management, brands, retail, synchronization, marketing and much more.

MUSEXPO 2017 honored two of the music industry’s most successful and inspiring executives in presenting Monte Lipman and Avery Lipman, the Co-Founders of Republic Records, with its “International Music Persons of the Year Award.” The event featured awards presentations from Sir Lucian Grainge (Chairman & CEO, Universal Music Group); A&R Worldwide & MUSEXPO Founder & President Sat Bisla; City of Los Angeles Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell; and President & CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, Leron Gubler, and recognized the Lipman’s for their incredible impact on the global music community.

MUSEXPO kicked-off with its A&R EXPO on Sunday, April 30th featuring an in-depth interview with highly-successful A&R executive Jason Flom (Founder & CEO, Lava Records/Lava Music Publishing), conducted by Music Week Editor Mark Sutherland, with Flom sharing insight on his history in the business and his perspective on the future of A&R and overall successful talent development. This was followed by a keynote A&R panel featuring hit songwriter/producer Alex da Kid; Republic Records’ Sr. VP of A&R Jason Jordan; Sr. VP of A&R and Head of Creative for Disney Music Group, Mio Vukovic; Atlantic Records Head of A&R, Pete Ganbarg; Robin Jenssen the VP & General Manager of EKKO Music Rights Europe; and hit songwriter/producer Savan Kotecha. In addition, Red Bull Records Managing Director Greg Hammer participated in a rare keynote interview with Music Business Worldwide’s Tim Ingham. Ingham also conducted a great in-depth keynote interview at MUSEXPO with Atlantic Records Chairman & CEO Craig Kallman, which was preceded by Mark Sutherland’s fantastic Global keynote that featured leading executives including Island Records President & CEO David Massey; BMG U.S. President of Repertoire & Marketing Zach Katz; Universal Music Group, Executive Vice President, Marketing, Andrew Kronfeld; Co-Founder & Executive Chairman, Saavn, Paramdeep Singh; and President, House of Blues Entertainment/Live Nation, Ron Bension.

This year’s MUSEXPO also saw the return of the annual “International Music Industry Awards” which were presented for their fourth edition in partnership with Pepsi. The event once again recognized the incredible contributions of the global music business’ leaders.

And as always, a plethora of great global talent showcased for agents, promoters, A&Rs, publishers, music supervisors, brands and radio influencers; numerous acts are already in talks for various deals worldwide via their MUSEXPO showcase performances last week.

MUSEXPO will return to Los Angeles in 2018 and will celebrate the 20th edition of the annual event, which has been held in three continents since its official launch back in 2005. In addition, 2018 will see A&R Worldwide celebrate its 20th year as the world’s leading independent artist discovery and development firm. Expect an incredibly stellar program and list of speakers to be unveiled for next year’s MUSEXPO along with a special celebration recognizing A&R Worldwide’s two decade milestone.

Below are executives who received accolades at this year’s prestigious 4th annual “International Music Industry Awards” in partnership with Pepsi at MUSEXPO Los Angeles on Wednesday, May 3rd at the W Hotel in Hollywood. Award recipients were nominated by their peers from around the world for their contributions to their respective areas of the global music business.

DIGITAL COMPANY: Prashan Agarwal - COO, Gaana (center) received an award for his company’s burgeoning growth across India and other international markets from Music Week Editor Mark Sutherland and A&R Worldwide/MUSEXPO President & Founder, Sat Bisla. From songwriters, producers, mixers, artists and more - AAM has been a visionary company in supporting its extensive talent roster. A&R EXECUTIVE: Pete Ganbarg - Head of A&R, Atlantic Records gave props to his entire team and executive management for helping him discover, develop and break the many acts his company has successfully launched over the past year into the N. American and international markets.

REBECCA ALLEN NAMED PRESIDENT OF DECCA RECORDS



Rebecca Allen
Decca Records UK has announced the promotion of Rebecca Allen from Managing Director to President. Allen has been a part of the Universal family for 17 years including roles as Decca’s Director of Media, General Manager and her most recent role as Managing Director since 2014. The role will see Allen continuing to report to David Joseph, Universal Music UK’s Chairman & CEO, and President & CEO of Global Classics and Jazz, Dickon Stainer.

The promotion comes on the heels of a number of successes for Decca including Top 10 albums for Ball & Boe, Dame Vera Lynn and most recently Imelda May. Additionally, Allen has garnered Gold album breakthroughs with acts Gregory Porter and The Shires as well as UK No.1’s with Rod Stewart and The Lumineers and continued chart success with the likes of Andrea Bocelli, André Rieu and Aled Jones.

In receiving the promotion, Allen commented, “Decca is one of the most iconic labels in British music culture, and to be given the opportunity to lead the company forward with a young and ambitious team is a huge privilege. We are known for being distinct and for signing the unexpected and I am enormously proud of the entire team at Decca and all our artists. I would like to thank David and Dickon for their continued support of Decca as the company evolves at an extraordinary time of innovation and opportunity for our industry.”

Joseph stated, “Becky is an extraordinary executive. Her passion for artists and every area of repertoire is matched only by the very obvious satisfaction she gets out of running an incredible team. Pretty much any genre goes at Decca, but the one thing that is predictable is that when Becky and her team get behind a project, there would have to be a very good reason for it not to be a success. She is an exceptional leader who is loved by everyone around her, but it would be a mistake to underestimate her steely determination. This is a very well-deserved promotion.”


FREDDIE DE WALL ANNOUNCED AS COO FOR FKP SCORPIO



Freddie de Wall
FKP Scorpio Konzertproduktionen GmbH has tapped Freddie de Wall for the newly-created position of Chief Operating Officer (COO) at the international promoter’s Hamburg headquarters. The new role will see de Wall leading transnational project development and coordination as well as the strategic development and expansion of new business fields, both domestically and abroad. Additionally, he will be responsible for the further development of the organizational and communications structure of the entire company, and for the control and optimization of business processes and internal workflows.

Most recently, Freddie de Wall was Co-Owner and Managing Director of Heinrich & de Wall/Artist & Music Management for 13 years, a company he founded alongside Karin Heinrich in 2004, where he played a key role at the company on the development of artist careers including Roger Cicero. de Wall’s career in the industry, spanning over three decades, started at former Hamburg-based concert agency SUNRISE, where he also worked as a booker and road manager, as well as roles with Phonogram and WEA Records. He transitioned to Metronome in 1991 as Marketing Director and in 1997, became VP of Marketing for Europe at the London headquarters of BMG Entertainment International. In 1999 he moved from London to Copenhagen, first as Managing Director of BMG Denmark, and then in 2002 leading edel Music.

FKP Scorpio Founder and Managing Director Folkert Koopmans stated, “With Freddie de Wall we have managed to acquire both a passionate and professional expert as COO. His diverse experience and contacts in the international music business will help us to successfully continue our expansion, both nationally and throughout Europe, and to implement the internal structures that are necessary to achieve this. Interscope Geffen A&M has announced the promotion of Joie Manda to Executive Vice President, reporting to John Janick, Chairman and CEO. Manda had previously been President of Urban Music for Interscope Records. Since joining the label in 2013, Manda has signed or overseen releases from 6lack, Rae Sremmurd, Tory Lanez, Mike WiLL Made-It, Dreezy, Playboi Carti, Machine Gun Kelly and others. Additionally, Manda has played a key role in Interscope partnerships with J. Cole for Dreamville Records, DJ Mustard, YG’s 4 Hunnid label and Atlanta-based LVRN Records. Manda has also launched Rule #1, his own JV at Interscope. Prior to Interscope Records, Manda served as President of Def Jam Records as well as Head of Urban Music for Warner Bros. Records. His time at Warner Music Group started as Executive Vice President of Asylum Records at its reboot in 2004 with the signings of Gucci Mane, Lil Boosie, Paul Wall and Bun B. Manda’s industry career started as a DJ before working as an artist manager.

Jack White
Jack White has signed a first-ever global, multi-year agreement with Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) to administer the iconic artist’s entire song catalog including his work with The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, The Dead Weather and chart-topping solo albums Blunderbuss and Lazaretto, as well as collaborations and future projects. The agreement sees UMPG working closely with White and his Third String Tunes and Peppermint Stripe Music publishing companies to develop creative and commercial outlets for his new projects and existing songs. Over his 20-year musical career, White has generated 170 songwriting credits, including collaborations with Beyoncé and Alicia Keys, 12 GRAMMY Awards and 35 GRAMMY nominations, as well as Platinum and Gold certified albums and singles. Additionally, as an entrepreneur, White launched Nashville’s Third Man Records in 2009, a combination record store, record label, distribution center, photo studio and live venue with the world’s only direct-to-acetate recording capabilities. Recently, White founded Third Man Books along with Third Man Pressing, a brand new vinyl pressing plant located within Third Man Records Detroit.

BMG has reached a new milestone with four different No.1 albums in four different European territories with four different artists within just seven days. Just a week after BMG-signed Texas topped the album chart in France with their latest album Jump On Board, this week sees No.1 albums from hip-hop act Kontra K in Germany with Gute Nacht; Roxette co-founder Per Gessle in Sweden with his new solo album En Vacker Natt; and Francesco Gabbani in Italy with Magellano.

Daniel Lee
BMG has also announced the promotion of Daniel Lee to VP Creative for BMG Nashville. The role will see Lee managing a roster of domestic and international hit songwriters, while continuing to report to Kos Weaver, EVP BMG Nashville. Lee has been involved in music publishing since relocating to Nashville in 2005 and joined the BMG team in early 2012. He will remain focused on acquiring and developing talent as well as creating opportunities for BMG songwriters. While at BMG, Lee’s roster of writers and producers have been nominated for five Grammy Awards, 10 ACM Awards and 10 CMA Awards as well as garnering more than a dozen No.1 singles, and song placements and singles with artists including Lady Gaga, P!nk, Hailee Steinfeld, Keith Urban, Maren Morris, Carrie Underwood and Thomas Rhett.

BMG has promoted Keith Hauprich to General Counsel & Sr. VP, Business Affairs N. America, its most senior legal and business affairs role in North America. Hauprich will be based in New York and report directly to Zach Katz, BMG U.S. President, Repertoire & Marketing. Previously Deputy General Counsel at BMG, Hauprich has played a key role in a number of significant deals, particularly in film and TV music publishing, securing the music publishing rights to major entertainment firms including AMC Networks, Activision/Blizzard Studios, Hasbro Studios and most recently, Netflix. Hauprich was also instrumental in BMG’s victory against internet service provider Cox Communications on the basis of contributory copyright infringement. Hauprich had served as General Counsel for Cherry Lane Music Publishing Company, Inc., prior to BMG’s 2010 acquisition of the company. Prior to joining Cherry Lane in 2000, Hauprich was an associate at a New York City law firm.

Multi-Platinum and Grammy Award-winning songwriter Hillary Lindsey has signed an exclusive worldwide publishing deal via a unique partnership between Rezonant Music Publishing and BMG. The agreement covers Lindsey’s entire catalog worldwide as well as future compositions with BMG providing creative and synch services. With 18 No.1 singles and a plethora of award nominations and wins to her name, Lindsey has written or co-written songs recorded by artists such as Taylor Swift, Florida Georgia Line, Carrie Underwood, Little Big Town, Thomas Rhett, Jason Aldean, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Lady Antebellum, Michelle Branch, Shakira, Bon Jovi and others.

Kobalt Music Group has announced a round of executive shifts including the exit of Richard Sanders from his role as President and Chief Revenue Officer. Assuming Sanders’ role at his departure is Laurent Hubert, who leads Kobalt’s platform and investments team. The expanded role will see Hubert leading Kobalt's music publishing and neighboring rights businesses worldwide, while maintaining to chair the investment committee for transactions made through Kobalt Music Capital and Kobalt Music Group. Additional promotions include those for Kobalt veteran Sas Metcalfe to Chief Creative Officer; Lonny Olinick to Chief Strategy Officer; Marissa Mencher to Chief People Officer; and Jeannette Perez to President of Global Synch and Brand Partnerships.

Kobalt recently announced the addition of Alison Donald as Head of Creative, U.K. (publishing and recordings). In the new role, Donald will oversee and work alongside artists and managers across AWAL, Kobalt Music Recordings and Kobalt Publishing (U.K.), while driving business growth across all divisions. Donald has previously held key roles in publishing at independent and major record labels including her most recent role with Columbia Records from 2011-2016. At Columbia, Donald led the label while playing a key A&R role including work with acts such as The Civil Wars, George Ezra, Tom Odell, Rag’n’Bone Man and The Vaccines as well as others. Prior to Columbia, Donald was Managing Director at Chrysalis Music Publishing from 2000-2010, where she signed and oversaw a number of projects such as Damon Albarn, Danger Mouse, The Gossip, Fleet Foxes, Laura Marling, Thom Yorke and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. From 1996-2000 Donald served as Head of A&R at Warner Chappell Music.

Warner/Chappell Music has finalized a worldwide publishing agreement with singer/songwriter and actor, Hailee Steinfeld. Steinfeld’s single “Starving,” co-written by Warner/Chappell songwriters Asia Whiteacre and Noise Club, went platinum in the U.S. and Top 5 at Top 40 Radio. Steinfeld has recorded songs with Machine Gun Kelly, Shawn Mendes, DNCE, Kato & Sigala and Prince Fox. An accomplished actor, Steinfeld’s acting career debuted when she was 14 with an award-winning performance in the feature film True Grit and she will join the cast of the upcoming Pitch Perfect 3 movie musical. The Oscar nominee’s appearances in musical films Begin Again and Pitch Perfect 2, led to her recording contract with Republic Records and the release of her debut EP, Haize, in 2015.

Leading global Indian streaming service Saavn is making international inroads with its recent deal with Sickick and his single “No Games.” Sickick is a Toronto, Canada-based artist, songwriter and DJ of Indian origins who has racked-up millions of streams and views for his original music and epic covers. Sickick recently formalized a singles deal with Saavn as part of its Saavn Originals platform, which gives emerging artists of Indian descent support across its various verticals; both online and offline.

Artist Legacy Group (ALG) has teamed with punk rock icon Iggy Pop for a new, worldwide brand management initiative which will see ALG leading new license extension opportunities for Iggy Pop's name and likeness via multiple product categories and media platforms. Regarded as one of the most dynamic stage performers of all time, Iggy Pop as a solo artist and with The Stooges has generated critical acclaim and a cult fan following. In 2010, Iggy and The Stooges were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Iggy Pop's music has been featured in a number of motion pictures, including Trainspotting, T2: Trainspotting, Gold and Kong: Skull Island, as well as in commercials for Royal Caribbean International, Guinness, Captain Morgan, Toyota, Chrysler, Audi and Volkswagen. Additionally, he has appeared in various film projects, including The Color of Money, Cry-Baby, Tank Girl, Blood Orange, Song to Song and Coffee and Cigarettes as well as TV programs The Adventures of Pete & Pete, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, The Venture Bros and Once Upon a Time in Wonderland.

Asia Pop 40 recently celebrated its landmark 200th episode via its broadcast across Asia. In recognition of the achievement, EON Media Group produced a special episode of Asia Pop 40 highlighting all the songs to reach No.1 on the chart since its launch. The special episode featured highlights from the previous 199 shows, including interviews with The Chainsmokers, Justin Bieber, Charlie Puth, Fifth Harmony and others. The English version of Asia Pop 40 is hosted by media personality Dom Lau and first aired back in 2013. The franchise currently broadcasts to more than 70 cities across Southeast Asia and China as well as Australia/New Zealand on iHeartRadio, in English and Mandarin.

Wow & Flutter, a full-service platform for songwriters, recently launched by former Universal Music Publishing Head of Film & Television, Becca Gatrell, has announced a new division focusing on original song/score composition for Film & TV. The first artists exclusively represented under the new division include Sigur Ros, Cat’s Eyes, Belle & Sebastian and Graham Coxon (Blur).

Sony/ATV Music Publishing has signed a worldwide deal with chart-topping British singer/songwriter Becky Hill. A successful artist in her own right, Hill has also worked as a songwriter alongside artists including Rudimental, Wilkinson, MNEK and Oliver Heldens. Becky Hill’s music career started with the band Shaking Trees prior to her becoming a semi-finalist in the first series of The Voice UK and featuring on Rudimental’s Mercury and Brits-nominated No.1 album Home. Her career to date has produced hits as both a writer and recording artist with acts such as Matoma and MK. Her late 2016 single “Warm,” co-written with Sony/ATV-signed Shift K3Y, received support on a number of radio outlets including BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra. Hill’s latest single, “Rude Love,” produced by MNEK and Dimitri Tikovoi, was released at the end of March and precedes new solo material, which she will issue independently, as well as a UK headline tour.

Talented British singer/songwriter Antigoni Buxton recently stopped by the A&R Worldwide offices, along with her management, to play us some of the recent songs she’s been writing and recording in the UK and in Southern California. Antigoni was recently signed to a worldwide record deal by Darcus Beese, President, Island Records UK with her debut single scheduled for release in late summer and her first major label album to follow. Current discussions are on the way with potential booking representation worldwide and publishing conversations are sure to follow suit.

Sony-owned distributer The Orchard has made acquisitions of two indie distributors with Finetunes (Germany) and Phonofile AS (Norway). The deal sees both companies becoming wholly-owned subsidiaries of The Orchard allowing The Orchard to expand its footprint across Europe. Labels within the Finetunes and Phonofile system will have access to The Orchard’s catalog of service in more than 25 territories globally including physical sales and distribution, global digital marketing, playlist promotion, interactive marketing, digital advertising, synch licensing, video services, performance/neighboring rights collections and artist royalty processing.

Polydor A&R executive Rich Castillo is currently involved in overseeing the A&R for a number of key projects at the UK major label. Rich tells A&R Worldwide that he has been involved in the A&R’ing of Stefflon Don, Mic Lowry and Mo who was the winner of “The Voice” UK TV show. International A&R Manager Victoria Rees is also staying very busy at the UK-based major with a number of exciting projects on the horizon.

Apple Music has partnered with social network Musical.ly which sees Musical.ly users with Apple Music subscriptions able to stream full songs via the app. Users will also have the option to save favorite songs to a custom Musical.ly playlists as well as access to Musical.ly’s own curated playlists. With its core demographic as 13-25-year-olds, Musical.ly seeks to place itself as a key platform for music discovery and launching careers of content creators.

Olympia
Universal Music Publishing Australia has signed Melbourne-based singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Olivia Bartley, aka Olympia, to the UMPG family via a worldwide publishing deal. Olympia released her debut album Self Talk in 2016, which garnered her a Triple J feature album spot and high rotation spins for single “Smoke Signals,” a top 30 ARIA debut and an ARIA nomination for “Breakthrough Artist.” Olympia has joined stages at festivals such as Groovin The Moo, Golden Plains and Falls Festival as well as supporting acts including Natalie Prass, Garbage and Paul Dempsey. In 2016, Olympia hit the road for her own sold-out headline tour across Australia and will soon head to the UK for The Great Escape.

Imagem USA has extended its long-time publishing and brand management agreement with The Irving Berlin Music Company, remaining the exclusive agent administering the company’s music publishing rights across the U.S. and Canada. Rodgers & Hammerstein (R&H) has represented The Irving Berlin Music Company since 1990, following Berlin’s passing. R&H Theatricals also continues its global theatrical licensing representation agreement for Berlin musicals Annie Get Your Gun, White Christmas and Top Hat, and has finalized a new global theatrical representation agreement for the new Irving Berlinmusical Holiday Inn. In addition, the R&H Concert Library renewed its representation of The Irving Berlin Music Company’s complete catalogue of songs to license as concert performances globally.

PACESHIFTERS
Talented Dutch trio, PACESHIFTERS, have recently signed a recording deal with London-based indie label Full Time Hobby/Hassle Records. Following a performance at 2015’s MUSEXPO event in Los Angeles, the band generated significant attention from the global music community and garnered multiple label and publishing offers from around the world. In addition to their new signing, have also recently added respected booking agent Steve Zapp from ITB to their global team.

Spotify has brought on board the team of Mediachain Labs, based in Brooklyn, via an acquisition of the blockchain specialists. The firm is a group behind the blockchain open-source protocol to establish a decentralized network for crucial data sharing to allow for payment to content creators. Mediachain launched in 2016 with backing from Andreessen Horowitz and Union Square Ventures. In tapping the Mediachain team, Spotify expedites its initiatives to implement the technology within the music space as it seeks to make publishing and royalty payments to artists and rights owners more efficient.

Primary Wave Music Publishing recently announced a deal with Rough Trade Publishing which will see Primary Wave providing financing to the New York-based publishing company. The funds will allow Rough Trade Publishing to continue to provide deals to artists globally, including their most recent signings, and the first since the deal with Primary Wave was finalized, LVL UP and 888. In addition to funding co-publishing deals, Primary Wave acquired an equity interest in Rough Trade Publishing. The deal will also allow Rough Trade Publishing to compete for new artists signings worldwide and will give them access to Primary Wave's marketing and creative team and Rough Trade Publishing's synchronization relationships.

Nordic Contingency at Fox Studios
Last week’s MUSEXPO in Los Angeles saw a Nordic contingency join the event as part of a group led by the MPA in Norway. The group connected with a number of MUSEXPO’s inspiring panelists via breakout sessions organized by MUSEXPO’s organizers including a special on-site visit to FOX Studios to meet with the network’s creative team including Mamie Coleman (VP, Music & Production), Steve Celi (Music Manager) and Scotty Schneider (Associate Manager, Music).

Music Business Worldwide (MBW) has tapped Dave Roberts as Associate Publisher for the UK-trade. Roberts was previously the Publisher of Music Week from 2011 during which time he helped reinvigorate the UK publication and its annual Music Week Awards. At MBW, Roberts’ role will see him working across editorial and business development.

The recently launched Decca Publishing has finalized a long-term, global publishing agreement with composer Max Richter, marking the first signing for Decca Publishing. Led by Natasha Baldwin, the new division will work closely with Universal Music Publishing Classical. The publishing arrangement will complement Richter’s recording work via Universal Music’s Deutsche Grammophon.

Merlin recently announced another significant reduction to its Administration Fee for members bringing the rate for commercial deals down 25%, dropping from 2% to 1.5% of revenues. The move marks the sixth time in five years that Administration Fees have been reduced, a decrease of almost 80% since 2012. The period from 2012-2017 has seen an over eightfold increase in Merlin’s royalty distributions to members, from $36m in 2012 to $300m in the past 12 months. The reduction comes alongside a significant expansion to the Merlin team, with Helen Alexander joining as Finance Director. A qualified Chartered Accountant, Alexander brings her experience in the creative and media sector, most recently at Warner Bros., where she was Director of Operations and Business Development.

Mute USA has appointed Amanda Vella as Marketing Manager, based in the company’s New York office. Vella joined Mute in 2014 as a marketing intern after achieving a Masters of Arts in Media and Communications from the prestigious Goldsmiths College at the University of London. Vella then secured a permanent position as a marketing coordinator where she executed the creation of digital strategy for Mute’s full roster including M83, New Order, Yeasayer and Lost Under Heaven. Amanda also played a key role in numerous tour marketing, digital advertising and production initiatives. The new expanded role, will see Vella continuing to manage operations pertaining to marketing, digital strategy and production alongside Mona Dehghan, Mute U.S.’s Director of Marketing.

Hailing from Brisbane, Australia, Hey Geronimo brings their warped indie-rock with their new single, “Mutant.” In 2016, they released their debut album Crashing Into The Sun to widespread critical acclaim, receiving praise from Australia’s The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Rolling Stone and The AU Review. At the age of 11, after his father took him to Sweden’s largest music festival in Malmö, Paul Rey knew that he wanted to be a performer.
