BMG has finalized a deal to start development on a new, full-service music facility in Nashville on the city’s iconic Music Row. The announcement follows BMG’s acquisition of one of Nashville’s leading independents, BBR Music Group, and its labels Broken Bow Records, Stoney Creek Records, Red Bow Records and Wheelhouse Records. The proposed new space follows BMG’s mandate of being the only international music group to bring together music publishing and recordings under one roof, consolidating the publishing and recording teams from BMG’s two existing local Nashville offices with the newly-acquired BBR Music Group.

Jon Loba, EVP BBR Music Group, said, “The importance of staying on Music Row and honoring the ideal of a supportive, tight knit and collaborative community was a priority to us all. Reflective of our shared philosophy and approach, this will maximize our team’s and our partners’ connectivity.”

Kos Weaver, EVP BMG Nashville, said, “Music publishing and recording have traditionally been viewed and operated as separate businesses, in separate offices, often in separate cities. The value of having the entire BMG Nashville staff in one locale is immeasurable and enables us to utilize the expertise across all our departments, with open lines of communication, creating a distinct edge for our artists and songwriters.”

BMG’s 80-person team in Nashville includes A&R, Accounting, Administration, Income Tracking, Marketing, Publicity, Radio Promotions, Royalties, and Sync Licensing. The proposed BMG office space will include songwriter/recording rooms and performance spaces, a collaborative floor plan, fully capable A/V meeting spaces and conference rooms, as well as a large communal outside area and terrace for live events.

Martin Bandier
Sony/ATV Music Publishing’s Chairman and CEO, Martin Bandier, was presented with a Lifetime Service Award from Motown songwriter/recording artist Smokey Robinson at last week’s National Music Publishers Association’s (NMPA) Centennial Annual Meeting. In accepting the award, Bandier also took the opportunity to call upon music streaming platforms to credit songwriters fully and clearly as they do recording artists. Referencing the fact that a typical week sees around 95 out of 100 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 written in part by someone other than the recording artist, Bandier commented, “So I call upon all music streaming services and others to prominently show the names of the songwriters who wrote the songs just as they clearly credit the artists who recorded them. It’s a tiny step but a hugely symbolic one that will once again put the role of the songwriter front and center and remind everyone of the songwriter’s vital contribution to music and the industry. And, ultimately, it will play a part in ensuring that these will become the best of times for everybody, including the songwriters and music publishers.”
