UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP APPOINTS ADAM GRANITE AS EVP, MARKET DEVELOPMENT

Universal Music Group (UMG) has announced that experienced international music executive, Adam Granite, has been appointed EVP, Market Development. Granite will be based in London and will report to Sir Lucian Grainge, Chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group with his appointment effective September 1, 2017.

The new role will see Granite working closely with UMG’s senior management team and operating companies across over 60 territories to maximize commercial opportunities for UMG’s artists and labels throughout Europe and emerging markets such as Africa, China and India. He will increase coordination of UMG’s audio-visual content in Europe and Asia and add to the company’s global strategy for marketing, distribution, and commercial initiatives including licensing, acquisitions and emerging genres.

In making the announcement, Grainge said, “More than ever, to be successful in an increasingly global music business, you must be able to maximize opportunities in markets around the world. With Adam, we are adding an experienced executive to UMG’s deep bench and gaining someone with a global track record of commercial success.”

“Universal Music Group is the gold standard when it comes to breaking artists across international markets,” Granite said. “With the global nature of today’s music industry, artists have access to audiences around the world and the ability to broadly influence culture on a scale never before seen. Granite’s more than 20 years of experience in the music industry includes running record labels and working in finance, strategic planning, operations, business development, merchandise, as well as roles overseeing territories in Europe, Africa, Russia, Turkey, Israel, and the Baltic and Balkan states. Granite’s most recent role saw him serving as President of Northern & Eastern Europe and Africa for Sony Music Entertainment, leading both Sony’s operations and licensed operations across those territories. Granite was also a key member of Sony Music’s International Executive Management team, where he led digital strategy, A&R, marketing, brands, market segmentation & consumer insights, and international sales & distribution deals. Prior, he was EVP, Sony Music International, and earlier served as General Manager of Epic Records.


MAMIE COLEMAN PROMOTED TO SR. VP, CREATIVE MUSIC AND PRODUCTION FOR FOX BROADCASTING



Mamie Coleman
Fox Broadcasting Company (FOX) has announced the promotion of Mamie Coleman to Sr. VP, Creative Music and Production for the company. In the new role, Coleman will maintain oversight of all day-to-day music production at the network, negotiating and executing the music and talent licensing agreements for all of FOX’s primetime show marketing and promotions. She will report to Scott Edwards, FOX’s Sr. VP, On-Air Promotions and Operations.

Most recently, Coleman had served as VP of Music & Production, On-Air Promotion, FOX. Her past role saw her working closely with TV studios, production companies, major record labels, recording artists and agents to secure talent and production materials for FOX’s award-winning on-air promotional campaigns. Coleman has negotiated deals for Empire, Star, Beat Shazam, Showtime At The Apollo and Grease: Live, as well as others.

Coleman started at FOX in 1992 as an intern before being hired as a junior on-air radio producer in the same year, booking talent and clearing music for all show-related radio promotions. In 1995, she worked as a writer’s assistant for HBO Independent’s comedy, Martin, which aired on FOX, before returning to FOX in 1997, as a production manager, working in the On-Air Promotions department until present.

Coleman has received a number of industry awards including the 2010 and 2011 Billboard Women in Music Awards as well as being a 2016 International Music Industry Award nominee for Music Supervisor of the Year.


UNIFIED RELAUNCHES AS UNIFIED MUSIC GROUP



Australian music company UNIFIED has relaunched under the banner of UNIFIED Music Group. The reorganization of the business and brand seeks to show the industry and consumers the four pillar business that exists to provide services across the music business. In addition to the rebrand, UNIFIED has launched its new Melbourne head office, and announced a series of staff promotions.

Founded in 2011 by Jaddan Comerford, UNIFIED has been one of the fastest growing companies in the Australian music industry with the concept of creating a business with four major pillars including Artist Management, Recorded Music, Touring & Events and Merchandise. The company currently represents management clients Vance Joy, Tash Sultana, Amy Shark, Mike Waters and Timberwolf amongst many others.

“Looking back at our original statement of intent, none of what we believe has changed,” says Comerford, “but we’ve grown and expanded in such amazing ways that it was time for us to refresh the way we organise our divisions. We exist as a company focused on building careers. Whether this is for a client or a team member that is why I get out of bed in the morning. So in order to do this, we need to be organised, and we need to be very clear about what we are doing and how we are doing it.”

Having started as a team of eight people in 2011, the company has grown to include 35 staffers in 2017. The firm now maintains offices in Melbourne, Sydney, London and most recently, Los Angeles, where Jaddan is currently based.


CHESTER BENNINGTON - R.I.P.



The global music community suffered another devastating loss last week with the passing of Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington at age 41. Across his lifetime, Bennington had struggled with drug and alcohol addictions, speaking openly about his battles with both, as well as other terrible situations he’d experienced in his life. Bennington was married and is survived by six children.

With the band’s debut full-length, Hybrid Theory, in 2000, Linkin Park brought the world their iconic form of alt-rock that incorporated elements of metal, rap and many other influences. When sophomore effort Meteora was released in 2003, it became the first of six chart-topping albums for the band. Across seven studio LP’s and an EP collaboration with JAY-Z, Linkin Park firmly rooted itself in the global music landscape as one of the 21st century’s most successful and influential rock bands.

Side projects for Bennington included Dead by Sunrise, formed in 2005, which produced one album, 2009’s Out of Ashes. Bennington had also joined with Stone Temple Pilots, following the departure of their frontman Scott Weiland, for one EP in the form of 2013’s High Rise.

Sony/ATV Music Publishing has extended its worldwide administration relationship with Mijac Music, the publishing home for all works written by the iconic Michael Jackson. Jackson founded Mijac in 1980 and in addition to his own music, the catalog came to include works by Sly Stone and the legendary soul songwriting/production duo Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff.

Sony/ATV Music Publishing has tapped Thomas Krottinger as Sr. Manager, International A&R. Krottinger will be based in the company’s Los Angeles office and report to both Guy Moot, Sony/ATV’s President, Worldwide Creative and Sr. VP/Co-Head of West Coast A&R, Amanda Berman-Hill. The new role will see Krottinger serving as the liaison for all of Sony/ATV’s international songwriters based in Los Angeles or visiting for writing opportunities. He will be tasked with teaming up songwriters, organizing writing sessions, arranging meetings between songwriters and industry and pitching songs.

Ministry Of Sound Recordings has appointed Amy Wheatley as General Manager for the company. Wheatley reports to Managing Director Dipesh Parmar, and David Dollimore, President of Ministry Of Sound Recordings and RCA. Wheatley makes the transition to Ministry Of Sound from Three Six Zero where she served as Head of UK Marketing and worked with artist such as Calvin Harris, Travis Scott, Hurts and Skott. Wheatley’s move marks her return to Sony Music having been a production assistant almost ten years ago, working across Sony imprints RCA, Columbia and Syco Music. Wheatley’s new role will see her working on campaigns for acts including London Grammar, Sigala, DJ Fresh, Louis Berry and Ministry’s recent signing Yogi.

U2 has topped the Hot Tours chart recently as the band has generated $61.5 million in sales across nine stadiums as they continue on their global tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of their iconic album, The Joshua Tree. Following the tour’s first eight stops and ten shows on its first N. American leg, The Joshua Tree Tour grossed $62.2 million making the overall gross currently, $123.7 million with 1,043,414 tickets sold.

Downtown Music Publishing announced last week the promotion of Andrew Sparkler to the role of Sr. VP, Business Development, reporting to COO, Andrew Bergman. Sparkler joined Downtown in 2014 as VP, Business Affairs and Operations and has played a key part on sourcing, negotiating and closing new deals with acts such as Ryan Tedder, Benny Blanco, Nikki Sixx, Jason Isbell, RJD2, Fania and others. Additionally, he was the driving force behind Downtown's innovative direct partnership with YouTube. In his newly expanded role, Sparkler will manage all catalog acquisitions and strategic business development opportunities across the company's offices globally. Prior to Downtown, Sparkler was VP and Head of Business Affairs at ASCAP having began his career in the music industry at Beldock, Levine & Hoffman.

Universal Music Publishing Australia has signed a global publishing deal with emerging young artist Ruel. The signing follows last week’s debut solo release of single “Don’t Tell Me,” first written by Ruel at 12 years old alongside Grammy-winning producer M-Phazes and Australian songwriter Thief. Currently featured on M-Phazes’ hit “Golden Years,” Ruel made his first live radio debut earlier this year with M-Phazes on Triple J’s “Like a Version,” making him the youngest-ever performer on the show at 14 years of age. Having already supported Gallant across Australia, Ruel is set to support Angus and Julia Stone on their sold out national tour in September.

David Zedeck has parted ways with his role as EVP/President of Global Talent & Artist Development at Live Nation to join the team at United Talent Agency (UTA) as Global Head of UTA Music, Partner and special advisor to the board of directors. Zedeck had been with Live Nation since 2012, leading the company’s global touring initiatives as well as bringing talent to Live Nation Entertainment’s global business divisions and working alongside Live Nation’s leadership team on global development. Zedeck had previously been with CAA, representing acts such as Justin Timberlake, Demi Lovato, Justin Bieber, One Direction, Ciara, Jonas Brothers and Il Divo. Based out of UTA’s LA headquarters, Zedeck will report to Jeremy Zimmer, UTA’s CEO.

Jeezy
United Talent Agency (UTA), has signed chart-topping, Grammy-nominated hip-hop veteran, Jeezy, to their roster for representation globally across all areas. Over his career, Jeezy has sold more than five million records across eight albums. His 2016 full-length, Trap or Die 3, marked his third Billboard 200 No.1 with all of his past albums having reached top 10 status. Jeezy is managed by Solomon Fornie and was honored by Forbes last year for his achievements in rap, philanthropy and his business acumen, including a number of successful ventures ranging from clothing lines to liquor partnerships to real estate and record labels.

peermusic has finalized a worldwide deal to exclusively administer the music publishing interests of iconic Canadian singer/songwriters Kate and Anna McGarrigle. With a career spanning for decades, their songs have been recorded by the likes of Linda Ronstadt, Maria Muldaur, Emmylou Harris, Billy Bragg, Kirsty MacColl, Rufus Wainwright, Dido, Elvis Costello and the Pet Shop Boys among others. The McGarrigle sisters received the ASCAP Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award in Folk Music in 2005 and were honored with the SOCAN Lifetime Achievement Awards in 2006. Kate and Anna emerged as popular folk performers in Canada in the 1970s and, after Maria Muldaur and Linda Ronstadt began recording their songs, the duo signed with Warner Bros. and issued their own debut in 1976. They wrote and recorded ten albums from 1975 through 2008, including acclaimed albums Matapedia (1996), The McGarrigle Hour (1998) and Vache Qui Pleure (2003).

BBC Music has unveiled a new music festival under the banner of The Biggest Weekend to roll-out next year. The festival will take place across four sites, in four nations, over four days, with more than 175,000 tickets available to the public. In a year when there is no Glastonbury, the BBC will bring The Biggest Weekend to England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland from May 25th - 28th, 2018. The Biggest Weekend involves all of the BBC’s music stations coming together with concerts being hosted by Radio 1, Radio 2, Radio 3, and 6 Music, as well as extensive TV coverage across BBC Two and BBC Four. All sets will also be available on the BBC iPlayer as well as via mobile and online. Radio 1, Radio 2, 6 Music and Radio 3 will work with BBC Nations TV and Radio, as well as local radio stations, forging partnerships to put on a comprehensive range of outreach activity in the lead-up to the festival including educational workshops, Radio 1’s Academy and BBC Introducing gigs showcasing local talent in each host location.

BASCA, in association with PRS for Music, has revealed the date for the 63rd Ivor Novello Awards as Thursday May 31st 2018 at the Grosvenor House, Park Lane, London. The event will once again recognize works released in the UK during 2017 as it honours songwriters and composers contributing to British music.

Help Musicians, the largest provider of health and welfare support for the British music industry, has announced MUSIC MINDS MATTER. The new campaign marks the world’s first dedicated 24/7 mental health service for people working in music. MUSIC MINDS MATTER will fund the 24/7 mental health helpline and service, expected for late 2017, that will combine listening, advice and signposting with clinical, medical, therapeutic and welfare support. In doubling the HMUK investment, with a minimum of £200,000, the mental health service would be sustainable beyond 2018. The charity can then continue to proactively raise money for the new fund, with ambitions to expand with global partners in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The MUSIC MINDS MATTER campaign launched today, with the funding platform at www.virginmoneygiving.com/fund/MusicMindsMatter.

BMG and Avid Technology have finalized a partnership to deliver loop-based packages featuring classic music from the BMG catalogue direct to users. For the first time ever, Pro Tools will offer loop-based samples to the Avid Marketplace featuring music from BMG’s master recordings catalog. Debuting at the 2017 NAMM Show, Pro Tools demos included music from the iconic American house label Strictly Rhythm. BMG will continue to work side by side with Avid to curate additional collections with Strictly Rhythm Producer Loops having been made available for purchase last week. The new BMG collections work together with Pro Tools 12.7 and Soundbase for users working independently or collaborating using Avid Cloud Collaboration. With tracks already available from a number of Strictly Rhythm artists, new download and expansion packs will be unveiled soon.

ICM Partners has added Australian singer-songwriter Cody Simpson to their roster. The 20-year-old, now based in West Hollywood, has landed on Billboard’s 21 Under 21 list for four straight years with his 2013 album, Surfers Paradise, debuting at No.10 on the Billboard 200. His collaboration in 2014 with Justin Bieber under the pseudonym JB X CS produced the single “Home to Mama” which has garnered over 100 million streams. Simpson is currently at work on his fourth studio full-length and maintains representation by Maverick and Hertz Lichtenstein.

INgrooves Music Group has added two executives to its senior global team with the appointments of David Lessoff to Sr. VP, Business and Legal Affairs, and Dave Roberge to Sr. VP of the indie distributor and marketing services company’s label development team. Based in Los Angeles, Lessoff report to INgrooves CEO Bob Roback. Past roles for Lessoff include senior in-house counsel at Capitol Records, New West Records and Rhino Entertainment as well as a four-year stint with law firm Manatt Phelps & Phillips. Based in New York, Roberge will report to Amy Dietz, INgrooves’ EVP/General Manager, and will be tasked with overseeing day-to-day interactions with the company’s label partners. Roberge will also manage the onboarding of new labels as well as work closely with the sales and engagement teams on strategic marketing around projects and lead the Label Development team operations. Roberge’s past experiences includes his most recent role as VP, Sales & Industry Relations for music tech startup Feature.fm. His industry career also includes launching Everfine Records and Artist Management, which eventually signed to a JV with Lava Records, after which Roberge was with Red Light Management for seven years and 251 Management for three.

Industry veterans Tom Callahan and Jeff Curry have recently formed cXc, based in Boulder, CO. cXc is a consultancy, focused on helping established and startup companies in the media, tech and digital spaces. Among the firm’s core offerings are included expansion strategies, product refinement, brand reinvigoration and opportunity integrations.

WME has signed Musical.ly stars Lisa and Lena Mantler for representation. The 15-year-old German twins boast one of the fastest-growing internet fan bases having generated over 21 million followers on Musical.ly within two years of signing onto the social media platform. With over 400 Musical.ly’s posted, the duo have wracked up 1.4 billion hearts, the platforms equivalent of a like, and their Instagram account tops 11 million followers. Lisa and Lena are also preparing for a live event scheduled to stop off in three locations across the UK this summer. They will maintain representation by Henning Mielke.

Maluma
Sony/ATV has finalized a long-term worldwide publishing agreement with Colombian act Maluma. Along with Maluma’s catalog heading to Sony/ATV, the agreement includes the artist/songwriter’s latest hits “Felices Los 4” and “Chantaje,” featuring Shakira. Maluma is signed to Sony Music Latin America as an artist and hasn’t entered a major publishing deal before his signing to Sony/ATV by the publisher’s President for Latin American and U.S. Latin, Jorge Mejia, with direct support from Chairman & CEO, Martin Bandier and U.S. Co-President, Danny Strick. Maluma’s work as a songwriter has garnered him 13 songs on the Billboard charts and he currently claims 10 million YouTube subscribers as well as six videos on YouTube’s global music chart.

CAA China has announced Mary Gu Shuhang as CEO for the media/entertainment firm. CAA China was launched earlier this year as a partnership between CAA and investment fund CMC Capital Partners (CMC). Gu will seek to grow CAA’s footprint in the region across sports services, branded content, live events, television, and music touring, as well as maintaining its market-leading position in motion pictures and film finance across Greater China. Gu joins CAA China from Special Olympics International, where she most recently served as Regional President and MD, East Asia. Prior, she held the role of VP for the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games executive committee.

Eleven Seven Label Group (E7LG) has tapped Leslie Hermelin to the role of VP of Publicity. Based out of the company’s NYC offices, Hermelin will report directly to Steve Kline, COO, E7LG and General Manager, Rose Slanic. Previously, Hermelin was Director of Media Relations at Mute Records as well as a stint as Director of Publicity at Astralwerks Record. Other previous positions include those at Girlie Action, Big Hassle, and Susan Blonde Inc. and work with acts such as Halsey, Porter Robinson, Empire of the Sun, Madeon, Holy Ghost!, M83, Moby, Jose Gonzalez, Goldfrapp, Nick Cave, Erasure, The Knife, Fever Ray, Liars and British Sea Power.

Paradigm Talent Agency will move its three LA locations into one flagship headquarters having recently finalized a long-term deal at the Wilshire + La Peer Building. The space encompasses three floors and 82,886 square feet with extensive renovations planned prior to a scheduled move-in for spring of 2018. Paradigm also recently brought its three East Coast offices together in New York to 140 Broadway.

Madyx is the brainchild of 24-year-old singer/songwriter and guitarist Michelle Blanchard. A&R WORLDWIDE’S "VIDEO OF THE WEEK" – JONAH

Vocalist Angelo Mammone and guitarist Christian Steenken are best known as Jonah, the neo-dream/folk duo based in Berlin, who have known each other since their days at elementary school. Two years ago, their emotional song “All We Are” was featured in a Vodafone campaign, following the footsteps of Empire of the Sun’s “We Are The People" (2010) and Woodkid’s “Run Boy Run” (2013), and things began to take off from there for the DIY pair. They have built a reputation for making visually stimulating videos and their latest release, “Wicked Fever,” is no exception. The Andre Lewski-directed video, filmed in Hong Kong, is based on a love story between two diverse worlds and gives the fans a taste of the upcoming debut album of the same name set for release this week.
