Bruce Springsteen
Universal Music Publishing Group (UMGP) has finalized a new deal with Bruce Springsteen to exclusively administer the iconic rocker’s entire catalog of songs and future projects, the first time a single publisher will represent his entire catalog worldwide. The agreement sees UMPG responsible for developing creative and commercial opportunities for Springsteen’s catalog consisting of multi-diamond and multi-platinum certified studio albums Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J., The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle, Born to Run, Darkness on the Edge of Town, The River, Born in the U.S.A., Tunnel of Love and The Rising.

Jon Landau, President of Jon Landau Management, said, “We are thrilled to be working with Jody Gerson and her team. After forty productive years of working with the leading independents, it is now time for us to centralize Bruce’s publishing. UMPG combines putting the artist first with creating, leading, and managing the incredible changes occurring in the world of publishing. At this point in Bruce’s legendary songwriting career, they are an ideal fit.”

Jody Gerson, UMPG’s Chairman and CEO, said, “During a career spanning more than 40 years, Bruce Springsteen has amassed one of the most iconic catalogs of songs in the history of music. As an artist, his demand for excellence and his requirement for heart and passion in everything that you do is the standard for how we operate every day at UMPG. We are thrilled to put the entire global resources of our company into expanding the popularity of his music and creating exciting new fan experiences.”

Having started in 1973 with the release of Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J., Springsteen’s career covers 18 studio albums that have garnered 20 Grammys, six for songwriting, and an Oscar in 1994 for Best Original Song for “Streets of Philadelphia.” In 1999, Springsteen was inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fameand the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which also inducted The E Street Band in 2014. He was awarded a Kennedy Center Honor in 2009 and he was MusiCares’ 2013 Person of the Year. In 2016, President Barack Obama awarded Springsteen with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his role in shaping American music.

Sony/ATV Music Publishing has finalized a publishing partnership with Heard Well, the first-ever music label powered solely by social media tastemakers and their communities. Under the partnership, Sony/ATV will collaborate with Heard Well’s influencers and curators as they seek to sign emerging artists they have discovered, while Heard Well will provide a platform for Sony/ATV’s own new songwriting talent via compilation albums releases under the label.

Since launching in 2015, Los Angeles-based Heard Well has created a network of social media influencers to curate playlists of their favorite new artists with each playlist released in digital and physical formats. In March of last year, Heard Well announced a deal with Sony Music’s Red Distribution which has since released over 15 compilation albums from Heard Well. Some of these releases have reached the Top 10 on the Billboard and iTunes charts, with Heard Well helping to generate millions of track sales and streams.

Heard Well Co-Founder, Connor Franta said, “I am absolutely beside myself with how far Heard Well has come in just two years. From the compilations to the radio station to publishing, I’m thrilled to see what Heard Well will tackle next. For now, we’re diving deep into the search for our first artist project and can’t wait to shed that spotlight sooner than you think.”

“This partnership is an exciting new weapon in our arsenal to add even more value to the emerging musicians we regularly partner with across our compilation releases,” said Co-Founder of Heard Well, Jeremy Wineberg. “We have been working seamlessly with Sony’s The Orchard for the last year as a distributor so this was a natural progression as Heard Well continues to grow. We’re excited to continue our partnership within the Sony family and eager to combine our strengths to break new artists.”

Artists who have been supported via Heard Well include Odesza, Gallant, Anderson .Paak, Daya, Duke Dumont, Betty Who and others. Earlier this year, Heard Well partnered with TuneIn to launch the first 24/7 radio station powered by influencers. Heard Well has also expanded into motion pictures, releasing two films, including this year’s, I Love You Both. CAA served as a strategic advisor to Heard Well on the deal.

PACES SIGNS TO REPUBLIC RECORDS: Pictured (l-r) are Ben Robinson (Falcona, Paces Management), Mikey Perry (Paces) and Aden Mullens (Head of etcetc).
Australian electronic music label etcetc has signed Gold Coast (Queensland) producer, Paces, to U.S. label Republic Records; a deal which includes local success “Savage,” which will receive a global push by the major. “Savage,” featuring Nyne, was released by etcetc in January of this year and was immediately added to high rotation on the influential national youth radio network, Triple J. The track has now garnered more than 6 million plays on Spotify. Republic Records is home to an all-star roster of multi-platinum, award-winning artists including The Weeknd, Drake, Lorde and many others.

On the signing, Brett Alperowitz, Sr. VP, A&R, Republic Records, said, “The Casablanca and Republic labels are very excited to welcome Paces to our artist roster. ‘Savage’ is a fantastic tune that we feel can have success here in the U.S. and around the world. The song was our point of discovery for this talented artist, but we look forward to more great music from Paces.”

Aden Mullens, Head of etcetc, said, “As a humble Australian indie label, it's affirming to have the excitement and support of one of the biggest labels in the world. Paces, Falcona and etcetc are looking forward to working with Brett and the global Casablanca/Republic team breaking Paces in key global territories.”

In a few short years, Paces, aka Mikey Perry, has gone from uploading his own releases to Triple J Unearthed, to signing with etcetc (home to leading Australian electronic artists PNAU, Luke Million and Kilter), to releasing his debut album Vacation, to great acclaim, becoming a finalist for MTV Brand New, and taking Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the 2016 inthemix Awards. Vacation reached the top 20 of the iTunes album chart and No.2 on the iTunes Electronic chart in Australia and featured a plethora of guest vocalists including Jess Kent, Ku?ka, Guy Sebastian and Baltimore’s Rye Rye. The Republic signing comes shortly after Paces signed a worldwide publishing deal with Primary Wave and BMG out of New York City.

As well as touring nationally for Vacation, Paces has supported the likes of Dillon Francis, Illy and Marshmello on their Australian tours, and will soon be announcing a tour in support of his latest single “Creepin” which was released by etcetc last Friday after being premiered by Triple J.

This first phase of the database will be secure, user-friendly and searchable and will be updated as new information becomes available with future phases looking to incorporate customization, interactive API solutions and the potential inclusion of other databases. The database will be publically available initially through ASCAP’s and BMI’s websites, will feature aggregated information from BMI’s and ASCAP’s repertories, showing where other performing rights organizations may have an interest in a particular musical work.

It was announced today by SESAC that the PRO’s arbitration with the Radio Music Licensing Committee (RMLC) has confirmed a rate 50% greater than ASCAP’s, confirmed earlier this year, which it had stated is the rate the RMLC has been trying to set for the industry. The rate constitutes the amount each PRO can charge radio stations for the use of their works across terrestrial radio. ASCAP and BMI operate under federal consent decrees determined in rate court, while SESAC does not and has negotiated its rate through three independent arbitrators. While neither PRO’s rates have been made public, the rate awarded to SESAC in this arbitration is lower than they had been receiving previously. The new terms for SESAC were agreed upon as part of a settlement of an RMLC-initiated anti-trust lawsuit, resolved in 2015. SESAC also revealed in a press release announcing the arbitrators' award, that costs of its arbitration will be borne by its shareholders, not by its musicians, publishers and songwriters.

In other SESAC news, the PRO has revealed that Grammy award-winning, multi-platinum recording artist and songwriter Adele, has transitioned to SESAC for representation in the U.S.

Zak Abel Signing
Sony/ATV Music Publishing has finalized a worldwide deal with singer/songwriter and emerging artist Zak Abel. The agreement comes as Zak Abel prepares the autumn release of his debut album, Only When We’re Naked, via Atlantic Records. Zak Abel was just 17 years old when signed with Atlantic Records for a worldwide recording deal. Following his label signing, he teamed up with British electronic music production duo Gorgon City to record the track “Unmissable,” which reached the Official UK Top 20 as well as top five on the Dance Singles Chart. Abel followed with a series of EP releases, working alongside producers such as Kaytranada, Joker and Wookie, as well as with chart-topping acts Avicii and Wretch 32. He is currently performing a series of live dates in the UK and in mainland Europe, including at the V, Sundown, Hope & Glory and Truck festivals.

Following his recent publishing deal with Sony/ATV, Latin music star Maluma has joined ASCAP for representation of public performances of his music catalog. Maluma’s latest single, “Felices Los 4,” just reached No.1 on the Billboard Latin Rhythm Airplay chart and only days after the introduction of a salsa version featuring music icon Marc Anthony, the tune has reached No.1 in E.U. Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Peru and Paraguay. His latest album, Pretty Boy Dirty Boy, was released in 2015 through Sony Music U.S. Latin and debuted at No.1. In his first year and a half in the U.S. market, Maluma saw five songs reach No.1 on Billboard's Latin Airplay chart and he is the youngest artist to simultaneously hold both the No.1 and No.2 spots on Billboard's Latin Airplay chart (with "Sin Contrato" and "Chantaje”) and only the sixth act to ever achieve the feat.

The Australian and global music community suffered a devastating loss last week with the passing of Dr G. Yunupingu, age 46, following a long battle with illness. Dr G. Yunpingu was one of the most important figures in Australian music history, blind from birth and emerging from the remote Galiwin’ku community on Elcho Island off the coast of Arnhem land to sell over half a million copies of his albums globally, singing in his native Yolngu language. His debut album reached triple platinum status in Australia, silver in the UK and charted in multiple other countries. The best-selling Indigenous artist in history, Dr G. Yunupingu released two additional top five studio albums, Rrakala and The Gospel Album, garnered a number of ARIA Awards, performed for audiences such as Queen Elizabeth II and Barack Obama, and released the first Indigenous language single to reach the top five. Dr G. Yunupingu was also the driving force behind the G. Yunupingu Foundation, creating opportunities for young people across the Northern Territory. Skinnyfish Music and Dr G. Yunupingu’s family ask for your respect at this time.
