MUSEXPO 2018 is set to return to the W Hotel Hollywood for its 20th global edition, April 29th - May 2nd. The event will once again offer its delegates an in-depth analysis of the global music landscape from leading executives and innovators across all facets of the industry.

MUSEXPO 2018 will also continue to provide its attendees unique and exclusive insights and opportunities from the global music synchronization arena. This year’s event will cover all aspects of the worldwide synch business including film, TV, gaming, advertising and brand partnerships.

In addition, MUSEXPO will offer a unique and interactive panel session giving delegates access to a number of synch opportunities across film, TV, games, brands, trailers, brands and on-demand, including opportunities to have music heard directly by leading music supervisors from across the synch landscape. Imran Majid & Justin Eshak
Columbia Records has announced the joint promotion of Justin Eshak and Imran Majid to Executive Vice President, Co-Heads of A&R for the company. They had both recently held the roles of Sr. VP of A&R. Based out of Columbia's New York office, Eshak and Majid report to Ron Perry, Columbia's Chairman and CEO.

Perry commented on the promotions, "Justin and Imran have proven to be innovative executives with a united vision. I’m confident they’ll frame an A&R culture built on breakthrough artists who can propel Columbia’s great legacy into the future."

Having joined Columbia in 2013, Eshak played a key part in the signing and development of artists such as Hozier and Leon Bridges. He’s also worked closely with The Chainsmokers on their success across streaming platforms with the group joining Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber as the only music acts with two songs surpassing one billion streams.

Eshak said, "I’m incredibly excited to continue working closely with Imran and our exceptional team as we actively cultivate and promote Columbia’s extraordinary artists and culture.”

Majid also came to Columbia in 2013 and has looked after artists including Russ and Ayo & Teo. In 2015, he signed Rachel Platten whose single "Fight Song" has sold over 5 million copies worldwide.

BMG has announced that Academy Award-winning filmmaker, Cameron Crowe, in partnership with his production company Vinyl Films, has signed a deal with BMG to produce an upcoming documentary on the life and times of David Crosby; the first documentary about Crosby to be fully authorized by the artist. BMG is both financier and executive producer of the film, with all rights available worldwide. The film is led by first time feature-doc director A.J. Eaton, who has been following Crosby for the past few years. Alongside Crowe, the documentary is produced by Michele Farinola for PCH Films and Greg Mariotti for Vinyl Films with executive producers including Justus Haerder and Kathy Rivkin-Daum (BMG), and PCH Films’ Jill Mazursky, Norm Waitt and James Keach. In 2017, BMG released David Crosby’s new studio album, Sky Trails, his third album of original material in four years.

Sony/ATV Music Publishing has signed emerging songwriter/rapper Lil Skies to a worldwide deal. The Pennsylvania-based talent has garnered his first two Billboard Hot 100 hits and reached the U.S. Top 10 with debut full-length, Life Of A Dark Rose. In just over a year, Lil Skies has gone from posting mixtapes online to a major label deal, Top 10 album and headline tour. Two mixtapes posted on SoundCloud, Good Grades Bad Habits and Alone, generated a significant buzz among music critics and record labels, including Atlantic Records, who signed him to a recording deal via Artist Partner Group last summer. Life Of A Dark Rose climbed to No. 10 on the Billboard 200 chart within two weeks of release with debut single “Red Roses” and follow-up “Nowadays,” both becoming back-to-back Hot 100 hits. Lil Skies’ Life Of A Dark Rose tour, his first ever tour as a headliner, generated positive reviews from UPROXX and Billboard.

Island Records in the UK has announced the promotion of Annie Christensen to A&R Director for the label. Christensen came to Island via a work experience placement in 2003 and within a year, became an A&R Assistant, eventually landing a scouting role. Alongside Island’s Head of A&R, Louis Bloom, Christensen helped secure a deal with Mumford & Sons which led to her promotion to A&R Manager. Christensen then went on to sign Spring King and co-sign Ben Howard and Hozier with Bloom. Christensen’s more recent signing, buzzing Norwegian singer/songwriter Sigrid, has racked up 185 million streams, 2 million sales globally and a Top 10 UK hit with her single “Strangers,” which has already moved 338,382 units.

Amazon Music revealed to Billboard recently that it has "tens of millions" of paid subscribers with its Unlimited offering more than doubling over the last six months. Sitting as the third-largest streaming platform behind Spotify and Apple Music, Amazon did not specify the exact number of paid subscribers currently using the service. Commenting in an interview with Billboard, Steve Boom, Amazon Music’s VP, attributed the growth to both the large and growing number of people subscribing to Amazon Prime, and the increasing popularity of smart/voice activated speakers, led by Amazon's Echo.

Downtown has finalized a worldwide publishing agreement with iconic country-folk singer/songwriter, John Prine. Downtown will represent more than 230 compositions from the Grammy Award-winner’s songbook, encompassing the majority of his output as a solo artist, as well as works recorded by Johnny Cash, Bonnie Raitt, the Everly Brothers, John Denver, Kris Kristofferson, Carly Simon, Ben Harper, Joan Baez, George Strait, Old Crow Medicine Show, Norah Jones, Bette Midler, Miranda Lambert, Carla Bruni, Zac Brown Band and others. Among Prine's compositions are included, "I Just Want To Dance With You," "In Spite Of Ourselves," "That's The Way The World Goes Round," "Long Monday," "20th Century Is Almost Over," and "Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness." The agreement will also cover Prine's highly-anticipated new full-length, The Tree of Forgiveness, his first new material in more than 13 years, scheduled for release on April 13th via Prine's own Oh Boy Records. Alongside the new album, Prine will start an extensive tour across 2018, including a very special co-headline concert at New York's Radio City Music Hall on April 13, with Sturgill Simpson.

In additional Downtown news, the company has signed a worldwide deal with Grammy-nominated Dutch producer/artist/songwriter, Mr. Probz. The deal covers Mr. Probz’s entire catalogue, including recent collaborations with Armin van Buuren and Anderson.Paak, as well as global hit single "Waves," which was remixed by DJ Robin Schulz and later released as a new version featuring T.I. and Chris Brown, garnering a Grammy nomination and topping charts in the U.S., U.K., and across Europe, while reaching multi-platinum status globally. The signing comes as Mr. Probz prepares his EP release for this spring, featuring lead single "Space For Two," that was most recently included on Spotify's New Music Friday playlist. The single and its accompanying video was a collaboration with Justin Gray (John Legend, Mariah Carey) and Johnny Black (Jessie J, Daughtry).

Downtown Music Publishing has finalized a deal to acquire a portion of song catalogs of renowned publisher and artist development company, Major Bob Music. Under the agreement, Downtown brings in more than 2000 copyrights including hits such as "I Like The Sound Of That" and "Fast Cars and Freedom" by Rascal Flatts, "Crash & Burn" and "Marry Me" by Thomas Rhett, "Dirt On My Boots" by Jon Pardi, "It Don't Hurt Like It Used To" and "I've Got A Feeling" by Billy Currington, "Where It's At" by Dustin Lynch, "American Honey" by Lady Antebellum, "There Goes My Life" by Kenny Chesney, "Commitment" by LeAnn Rimes, "Strange" by Reba McEntire, "Our Time Now" by Plain White T's, and "Fly Over States" by Jason Aldean. The deal specifically excludes the Garth Brooks catalog and any songs recorded by Garth Brooks.

John Williams
BMI has announced they will present iconic film composer John Williams with a special award bearing his name in recognition of his significant achievements as one of the most successful film and television composers of our time. The John Williams Award will be presented for the first time at the 34th annual BMI Film, TV & Visual Media Awards on Wednesday, May 9th. In addition to honoring Williams, award-winning composers Laura Karpman, Miriam Cutler and Lolita Ritmanis will be receiving the BMI Champion Award for their commitment to supporting fellow women media composers through The Alliance of Women Film Composers, which they founded in 2014. Composer Rick Baitz will also be presented with BMI’s Classic Contribution Award to recognize his creating and leading BMI’s “Composing for the Screen” workshop over the past ten years. Across the evening, composers of the previous year’s top-grossing films, top-rated primetime network television series and highest-ranking cable and streamed media programs will also be recognized.

Spotify’s highly-anticipated IPO closed its opening week on the New York Stock Exchange Friday (April 6th) with shares trading at $147.92. The price marks a 12.2% drop from Tuesday's opening of $165.90. With price swings expected due to Spotify's direct listing IPO, which provided early investors and employees the option to sell as many shares as they wanted, prices leveled across Thursday and Friday at $145 - $150 per share with Friday’s share prices rising 2.7% from the day prior. At its closing price, Spotify is valued at more than $26 billion. Prior to the streaming company’s IPO, its stock had sold for as much as $132.50 per share, meaning at Friday's price, early investors are still seeing a 16.4% profit.

Creative Artists Agency (CAA) continues to build on its hip-hop and R&B division with the hires of agents Caroline Yim and Zach Iser, both previously at ICM. Alongside the hires, CAA announced new signings to its growing urban roster that include SZA, Future, Anderson .Paak, Daniel Caesar, Rae Sremmurd, ScHoolboy Q, Jhené Aiko, Kehlani, The Internet and Willow Smith, adding to its existing roster that counts Beyoncé, Kanye West, A$AP Rocky and Cardi B as well as Logic, A Tribe Called Quest, Fetty Wap, KYLE, Smino, Jorja Smith and GoldLink. Iser will be based out of CAA's New York office with Yim in LA.

London-based Coalition Agency has promoted Vinesh Patel to Head of Talent. In the new role, Patel will report directly to Coalition’s Founder and CEO, Guy Robinson. Patel, who was shortlisted for "Agent of The Year" at the Live UK Music Awards in 2017, came to the company in 2013 from Keele University where he had served as Head of Entertainment. At Coalition Agency, Patel has developed the widely successful university based Coffee House Sessions, which has provided a touring platform for acts such as Izzy Bizu, Hudson Taylor, Tom Walker and The Shires, among others. He has also built and developed his own talent roster counting The Hoosiers, The Showhawk Duo, Tony Christie, Karen Harding, Sondr and social influencer Jack Maynard, as well as Charli XCX and Dan Caplen who are signed for DJ representation. The new role will see Patel taking on responsibility for and overseeing all talent acquisition and development for Coalition Agency, as well as having a strategic input on the overall direction of the company.

UK-based agency E.G.O has been acquired by international booking agency, K2. Under the acquisition, Jim Morewood, E.G.O’s Founder, will assume the role of Senior Booking Agent with K2 and will be joined by Yerry Stetter, his long-time colleague and agent. The pair add themselves to K2’s booking team including company CEO John Jackson, Jane Miller, Leo Benton and Sharon Richardson.

Sukhinder Singh Cassidy has been tapped as President for eBay-owned StubHub. Based in San Francisco, Singh Cassidy reports to Devin Wenig, CEO, eBay Inc. She steps into the role left vacant by Scott Cutler upon his promotion to Sr. VP and Head of eBay’s Americas business division. With decades of experience in leadership and technology, Singh Cassidy most recently founded theBoardlist, a benefit corporation and premium talent marketplace for boards, started in the technology industry. She also founded the first video commerce platform Joyus, and served as CEO of fashion and lifestyle platform, Polyvore. Additionally, she was Founder and Sr. VP of Business Development at Yodlee and has been in senior leadership positions at Google, including over five years as President of Asia Pacific and Latin America. Singh Cassidy remains on the board of directors for Urban Outfitters and as Chairman of theBoardlist.

Arctic Monkeys
Widely successful U.K. rock outfit, Arctic Monkeys, have revealed details of their sixth full-length release, Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, the group’s first release since 2013’s AM. Produced by James Ford and frontman Alex Turner, the new album is scheduled for release via Domino on Friday, May 11. Arctic Monkey’s will also be headlining shows and festivals globally from May to August.

Last week Sony Music Entertainment sold off 17.2% of its shares in Spotify at the streaming platform’s IPO launch, bringing in a gain of $260.5 million. Following Spotify’s first day of trading, Sony’s initial 5.7% stake would have been worth around $1.5 billion. The company stated it expects a total net gain in the value of its holdings of around $977 million, accounting for payments of shares from the equity sale to artists and independents. Sony didn’t disclosed details on the calculation of the price of the shares prior to the IPO so amounts from set to be distributed to labels and artists are not clear.

Independent music distribution and marketing services company, INgrooves, has signed Norwegian indie label, Propeller Recordings, to a global distribution deal. INgrooves' team, led by its Nordic management team of Kristine Bjørnstad and Tim Dunham, will execute campaigns for Propeller's artist roster, including upcoming releases scheduled this year from newcomer Amanda Tenfjord and successful Norwegian outfit, Highasakite. Launched in 2003, Propeller Recordings is one of the most influential record labels in Norway, with offices in Oslo, London and Berlin.

Following its rejection of CBS Corp.’s recent initial merger proposal, Viacom has presented a counterproposal to CBS’s all-stock offering, which had valued Viacom below its market price, placing higher price on the company. The initial proposal, which would join the two entertainment giants again after 12 years apart, had placed CBS’s Chairman and CEO Leslie Moonves and COO Joe Ianniello as the leads for the combined company with no specifics on the position for Bob Bakish, Viacom’s current CEO. According to sources, the counteroffer positions Bakish and Moonves leading the merged companies.

MelodyVR has revealed that its inaugural product, the MelodyVR app, is expected for release "in the coming weeks." No exact details were provided via the company’s press release on launch date or cost of the app. MelodyVR plans to launch the app for the Oculus Go device, yet to be released by Facebook/Oculus, MelodyVR’s partner. MelodyVR has already finalized deals with major labels including Warner/Chappell, Sony, Universal and Roc Nation as well as a partnership with Microsoft.

CAA veteran marketing executives Marshall Eskowitz and Carey Schwartz have parted ways with the agency to set-up their new entertainment and consulting firm, Sunset Blvd. The new company will provide its clients with strategic guidance for partnerships, sponsorships, talent negotiation and other deals. Eskowitz had been with CAA Marketing for seven years, managing music strategy for brand clients such as Chipotle Mexican Grill. Schwartz’s 10-year tenure with CAA began in the motion picture department before transitioning to marketing where he most recently headed-up the Coca-Cola business, overseeing entertainment strategy across the brand’s portfolio.

Jimi Hendrix
LA-based Epic Rights and New York-based Perryscope Productions have finalized a deal with Experience Hendrix to roll-out a new Authentic Hendrix merchandise initiative. The Authentic Hendrix brand program, which will launch in May at Licensing Expo, includes fashion apparel, headwear, footwear, tops, figures, wall art, accessories, jewelry, home décor, digital products, collectibles and never-before-licensed products from a collection of material provided by Authentic Hendrix and Experience Hendrix. The new Authentic Hendrix merchandise will enter retail platforms in early summer 2018.

A joint venture has been finalized between RCA Records and Keep Cool, a new label Founded by RCA executive Tunji Balogun, Courtney Stewart, Jon Tanners and Jared Sherman. The label will sign and develop artists to the Keep Cool/RCA Records JV. At the same time, Balogun is promoted to EVP, A&R for RCA from his prior role as Sr. VP, A&R, where he will continue to sign and develop artists for the label based in their West Coast office. Since joining RCA in 2015, Balogun has played a key role in signing acts such as Brockhampton and Grammy-winner Childish Gambino, as well as developing the careers of artists including Khalid, Bryson Tiller, GoldLink, H.E.R. and Wizkid. Additionally, Balogun was a member of the team that helped secure the label’s partnership with Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) and SZA. Prior to RCA, Balogun worked in the A&R department at Interscope, having started his music career at Warner Bros. Records as a marketing intern.

YouTube will broadcast the exclusive live stream from Coachella’s first weekend for the eighth consecutive year via Coachella's YouTube channel across any platform (desktop, mobile, TV). Presented in the U.S. by T-Mobile, Optus in Australia and Garnier in Canada, viewers have the option to stream four live feeds from different acts simultaneously, including a VR180 channel featuring exclusive coverage from headsets like Google Cardboard and Daydream View. Fans can also create custom viewing schedules prior to the festival for sets they want to see with the live streams switching automatically to the pre-selected performances. The video-on-demand feature will include highlights from the weekend hosted by Jason Bentley with co-hosts Nadeska Alexis, Valerie Leeand Brittany Eustis. Google Home and Google Pixel will also feature a number of unique activations over the course of the weekend.

Live Nation’s Festival Passport program has expanded to include over 100 participating festivals globally, with the addition of a new VIP tier program. Having sold through 1,000 passports in 24 hours with its debut 2017 offering, costing $799 and incorporating 90 festivals, the entertainment company is more than doubling the run of passports to 2,500 at a cost of $999. Also for 2018, Live Nation is offering up 100 VIP Festival Passports at a $5,000 cost. Included with this year’s passport is access to U.S. festivals such as Austin City Limits Music Festival, Bonnaroo, Governors Ball, Electric Daisy Carnival as well as Falls Festival in Australia, Sydney City Limits, a Creamfields event in China, RedFestDXB in the UAE, Poland's Impact Festival, Openair Frauenfeld in Switzerland, Edinburgh Summer Sessions, and entry to all three Lollapalooza events in Berlin, Paris and Chicago.

Bernie Cahill and Greg Suess have departed the management firm Roar, which they co-founded in 2004, to open the doors of Activist Artists Management. Joining the duo is fellow Roar Partner Matt Maher and Liz Norris, who will be a Partner at Activist, as well as Roar’s full music department, including 11 managers and a roster of acts counting the Grateful Dead, Dwight Yoakam, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Clare Bowen, Bob Weir (Grateful Dead), Ben Rector and Dead & Company (co-managed alongside Azoff/Moir). Along with music, talent and brand management, Activist will work across film/TV development, partnerships and strategic alliance management, digital marketing, licensing, sponsorship and endorsements. Activist rolls-out, funded in part by Tony Khan and the Khan family, who have invested an undisclosed sum into the firm as well as set-up the Activist content and venture fund, focusing on entertainment, hospitality and consumer products, services and technologies investments. Activist will be headquartered in West Hollywood, CA with additional operations in New York, Nashville and Atlanta. Norris and Maher will lead the New York and Nashville offices, respectively.

Will Ward
Also exiting Roar to unveil his new venture is Will Ward with the veteran executive launching his own Fourward firm, a TV/film/music management, production and investment company. Joining Ward are 13 Roar team members, including CAA agent Jon Levin, who will lead the film/TV production and literary departments of the new operation. Having become a founding partner in the early 2000’s, Ward oversaw the TV and film department and managed the Zac Brown Band. In the film arena, he co-produced the Ron Howard’s 2015 film, In the Heart of the Sea. Among the film clients departing Roar to Fourward are included Chris Hemsworth along with his brothers Liam and Luke, Cobie Smulders, Aisha Tyler, Sharlto Copley, Luke Bracey, Alice Braga and Austin Stowell as well as others. Fourward’s music department brings over Sony/Ten Music’s Elliphant and singer/songwriter Hannah Hoberman. Leading Fourward's corporate department is former Managing Director of Roar Asia-Pacific, Trent Blacket, overseeing offices in Melbourne, San Francisco and Shanghai, with Peter Sung (former Managing Director at Roar) assuming the role of Head of Ventures and leading the New York, Hong Kong and Seoul offices.

MTV has revealed an expansion on their TRL offering with the addition of a morning program and a night program. Total Request AM, scheduled to premiere on April 23rd, will be helmed by longtime MTV News host Sway Calloway and include performances, interviews and a music video countdown during over its one-hour airing. The original afternoon offering of the original TRL will also return on the 23rd with Total Request LateNight having rolled out February. TRL LateNight currently airs twice a week on Mondays and Tuesdays with this summer growing to three nights to four nights by the end of the year.

Aussie indie publisher Native Tongue has signed the Sydney/New York-based Vallis Alps. Native Tongue will represent the duo’s catalogue in Australia and New Zealand. The last 12 months has seen Vallis Alps release their second Fable EP, and singles “Oceans” and “So Settled,” while completing a run of 35 sold out headline dates and festival sets worldwide. Additionally, the publisher has added New Zealand-based singer/songwriter, Tami Neilson, to its roster. Neilson has garnered a number of accolades and achievements to her name, including the prestigious APRA Silver Scroll. She is set to follow up her two critically-acclaimed albums, DYNAMITE! and Don't Be Afraid, with her recently announced third album SASSAFRASS! in June. The lead single “Stay Outta My Business” is out now.

Catherine Tait has been appointment President and CEO of CBC/Radio-Canada marking the first time the Government of Canada has appointed a female to the role. Tait steps into the position for a five-year mandated term. Tait brings to the role over 25 years of experience in the independent film and TV business having been involved with Canadian cultural organizations and media and broadcasting companies such as Telefilm, the Canada Media Fund, CHUM, eONE and DHX Media. Tait is a founding partner of the largest licensee of Canadian feature films in the country, Hollywood Suite, and most recently, was President of Duopoly, a New York independent film, TV and digital content firm. She founded the award-winning digital content production and distribution company iThentic in 2006 and from 1997 to 2001, served as President and CEO of Salter Street Films.

Paul Geary, the former drummer for Extreme, alongside his longtime business partner Steve Wood have launched a new full-service artist management firm under the banner of Global Artist Management. Based in LA, the artist roster at launch includes Godsmack, Steel Panther, Hoobastank, Joe Perry and Hollywood Vampires (in cooperation with Shep Gordon) and others. Having started his artist management career in 1995, Geary opened up PGM (Paul Geary Management) and quickly brought Godsmack to the company with additional acts including Fuel and Cold. Azoff Music Management absorbed PGM in 2005 which led to the start of AGP (Azoff, Geary, Paul Mgmt.) and a roster including Godsmack, Smashing Pumpkins, Creed and New Kids on the Block. Wood was charged with leading AGP's touring division in 2007, having first met Geary in the 80s while tour managing Cinderella. AGP shuttered when Azoff parted ways with Live Nation in 2013 and was re-launched by Geary and Wood with a stable including Alter Bridge, Steel Panther, Billy Ray Cyrus, and longtime client, Godsmack.

Beatport has made the acquisition of DJ streaming and subscription service Pulselocker Inc. via a strategic deal seeking to integrate the latter’s patented technology into Beatport’s own streaming platform later this year. Pulselocker’s software provides DJs access to an integrated "locker" of music through performance software applications such as Pioneer DJ's Rekordbox, Serato, Virtual DJ and others. Despite digital song sales in the U.S. dropping 23% last year according to Nielsen Music, Beatport has experienced growth in recent years, according to Robb McDaniels the company’s CEO, with professional DJ’s seeking higher-quality sound than the majority of streaming platforms provide while also avoiding complications due to lack of connectivity. At its 2012 launch, Pulselocker’s subscription service provided DJs with music streaming capability via the cloud using the company's technology, with no need for an internet connection. Pulselocker tracks play counts, as well as user information about cue points and loops, and delivers copyright holders with a pro rata share of the subscription revenue. Integration with the large DJ software and hardware manufacturers took years to accomplish and the company shuttered in late 2017. Beatport’s new streaming offering will launch later this year with Pulselocker customers able to sign up for the new integrated subscription and locker.
