DARCUS BEESE NAMED PRESIDENT OF ISLAND RECORDS

Universal Music Group (UMG) has announced that Darcus Beese OBE, widely–respected and iconic British music executive, has been named President of Island Records, where he will join UMG’s U.S. label leadership team.

Beese's career has included work with the likes of Amy Winehouse, Florence Welch and breakout star Sigrid, as well as many others, in addition to leading Island Records U.K. since 2013. Beese will succeed David Massey as President of Island Records in New York, effective July 1st.

In making the announcement, Sir Lucian Grainge, Chairman and CEO of UMG, said, “Few in the music industry have Darcus’s track record of creative and commercial success. I’ve had the pleasure over the years of working closely with Darcus, who has impeccable creative instincts and takes a long–term view of artist development. I’m thrilled he is taking on this new role and I’m excited to support him in signing, developing and breaking many more artists.”

Beese said, “Island Records was founded nearly 60 years ago by Chris Blackwell to serve as the home for boundary–defying and maverick artists with the ability to move popular culture. To this day, that mission continues to define and drive Island, whether in the U.K. or U.S., and I couldn’t be more proud to play a role in carrying on that legacy. I’m grateful to Sir Lucian for this opportunity and I’d like to thank my U.K. boss and friend David Joseph for his generous support through the years. I’m looking forward to working closely with Michele Anthony, Monte Lipman as well as Eric Wong and the excellent team at Island.”

Having been with Island Records U.K. for nearly his entire music career, Beese started as an intern in the label's promotion department in 1989, progressing through a number of positions within the company including A&R Director, where his signings included Amy Winehouse, Sugababes and Taio Cruz. In 2008, Beese was named Co–President of the label along with Ted Cockle, which saw them developing acts such as Mumford & Sons and Florence + the Machine.

In 2013, Beese was named President of Island U.K. where he oversaw the careers of established acts including Annie Lennox, PJ Harvey, Robbie Williams and U2, as well as emerging new acts Ben Howard, Big Shaq, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Disclosure, Hozier, Jessie Ware, JP Cooper, and most recently, Sigrid. Additionally, he helped break a number of U.S. artists in the U.K. including Ariana Grande, DNCE, Drake, Hailee Steinfeld, Nick Jonas, Nicki Minaj, Post Malone and The Weeknd, among others.

Beese was honored as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list 2014 for services to the U.K. music industry.


SONY/ATV EXTENDS DEAL WITH LUIS FONSI

Sony/ATV Music Publishing has extended its worldwide deal with songwriter and artist Luis Fonsi, whose hit “Despacito” is the most–streamed song of all time. With Fonsi having first signed to the publisher in 2005, the new agreement covers the record–breaking global No.1 “Despacito” and a number of other chart–toppers, including the Latin Grammy Song of the Year “Aquí Estoy Yo,” “No Me Doy por Vencido,” “Nada Es Para Siempre” and his most recent hit “Échame la Culpa” with Demi Lovato, as well as future works.

Sony/ATV President, Latin America and U.S. Latin Jorge Mejia said, “In my career and perhaps in the annals of Latin music, there is certainly a ‘before Despacito’ and an ‘after Despacito.’ I am honored to extend our long–standing relationship with Luis Fonsi, a history–making artist, songwriter and friend.”

As the co–writer and co–vocalist of the record–breaking “Despacito,” Luis Fonsi achieved global recognition however, the Puerto Rican talent had already been one of Latin music’s biggest stars for nearly two decades. “Despacito” marked Fonsi’s seventh top entry to the Billboard Hot Latin Songs Chart. Incredibly, “Despacito” topped the Latin chart in two versions, first as a duet with its co–writer Daddy Yankee and then as a remix featuring Justin Bieber. Its chart–topping run only ended at the beginning of this month, having spent a record 52 weeks at No.1 with the remix also entering the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the first primarily Spanish–language song to top the chart in over two decades and tying the record for longest stay at No.1 with 16 weeks. It also became the first Latin song to receive a Diamond award from the RIAA, reaching 10 million sales and streams in the U.S.

Additional No.1 spots globally for “Despacito” included 11 weeks in the spot on the Official U.K. Singles Chart, as well as No.1 status in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Sweden. It was also recognized last summer as the most–streamed song globally of all time after reaching 4.6 billion streams and is the most–played video in history on YouTube, having this April surpassed 5 billion views.

Fonsi’s success with “Despacito” has garnered a number of award wins and nominations including four wins at the Latin Grammy Awards and five awards at the recent Billboard Music Awards. In March Fonsi was also presented with the President’s Award at the BMI Latin Awards.


WARNER/CHAPPELL ADDS ALAN MENKEN TO ROSTER

Warner/Chappell Music (WCM) has signed a global publishing agreement with world–renowned songwriter and composer Alan Menken. Best known for his Disney and Broadway scores and songs, Menken has won eight Academy Awards, more than any other living composer, as well as eleven Grammy Awards, a Tony Award, seven Golden Globes, the Drama Desk Award, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, an induction into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, London's Evening Standard Award, the Olivier, Outer Critics Circle Awards and numerous other honors.

“I’ve had so many exciting chapters in my career; too many to mention, without making me feel really old. But nothing has excited me more than embarking on this new chapter in association with Warner/Chappell Music,” said Menken.

Warner/Chappell will administer Menken’s entire catalog, including current and upcoming material, with the exception of select Disney works. Among Menken’s current projects are Broadway hit A Bronx Tale, based on the play by the same name; Disney Aladdin and a Guy Ritchie–directed live–action Aladdin movie.

WCM’s extensive catalog in musical theatre includes songs written by the likes of George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Lerner and Loewe, Charles Strouse, Comden and Green, Stephen Sondheim, and Rodgers and Hart, with a roster of notable composers including Lin–Manuel Miranda.


UTA ADDS NEW EMERGING & ESTABLISHED TALENT TO ROSTER OF ACTS

United Talent Agency (UTA) has recently revealed a round of signings for worldwide representation that bolsters the firm’s roster of established and emerging talent.

UTA has added Grammy–nominated rapper Vic Mensa to its roster for international representation. Mensa’s live credits include opening for Jay–Z’s 4:44 tour and supporting the likes of Justin Bieber, Disclosure and Beyoncé as well as Dua Lipa last month on her U.K. and Ireland tour. His debut studio album, The Autobiography, was released via Capitol Records and Roc Nation last year. Mensa is managed by Scooter Braun, David Appleton and Cody Kazarian of SB Projects.

UTA also adds singer/actress Nicole Scherzinger to their roster for representation across all areas globally. Widely recognized as the Pussycat Dolls’ lead singer, Scherzinger has moved more than 60 million records worldwide over her career and has of late been focused on her next music project amidst regular performances worldwide for private and corporate events. Scherzinger’s resume also includes an Olivier Award–nomination for her role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats The Musical in London’s West End, and duets with Andrea Bocelli on a number of classical projects. Her acting credits include the role of Sina in Disney’s Moana as well as the lead in the movie musical remake of Dirty Dancing for ABC. She also took top honors on the 10th season of Dancing with the Stars and is an X Factor judge. Management for Scherzinger will be maintained by First Access Entertainment.

The agency has also added Randy Jackson, the well–known producer, performer and former judge on American Idol. UTA will represent Jackson, who had previously been with CAA, across all areas. Jackson is a longtime musician with a background that also includes A&R roles at Columbia and MCA Records. With over 1,000 gold and platinum records to his name and more than 200 million album sales globally, the Grammy winner has worked with the likes of Smokey Robinson, Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin, and performed with artists such as Mariah Carey, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, Bon Jovi, Keith Richards, Journey, Carlos Santana, Bruce Springsteen, Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir. Jackson’s current projects include operating his own artist management and production firm Dream Merchant 21 Entertainment as well as working with Faction which will see him transitioning his roster of pop and Latin acts as well as producers and digital talent to the management company.

Additionally, as a result of her recent MUSEXPO 2018 showcase in Los Angeles, U.K.–based artist Jazz Morley has signed on with legendary booking agent and UTA’s Global Head of Touring, Neil Warnock. Jazz commented, “MUSEXPO was such a fantastic experience. Not only was the insight from hugely successful music industry professionals enormously beneficial, I also made some special friendships and established career–changing work relationships. Neil Warnock came to my showcase and asked to represent me on the spot. It's the sort of thing dreams are made of. MUSEXPO was more than I hoped it could be. BMG has finalized a worldwide partnership with multi–platinum, rock outfit Good Charlotte and their MDDN label to release the band’s upcoming new studio full–length later this year. Good Charlotte’s success includes Top 10 charting albums The Young and the Hopeless, The Chronicles of Life and Death and Good Morning Revivaland as well as hit singles “The Anthem,” “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” and “I Just Wanna Live,” that have seen the quintet selling over 11 million albums worldwide. The group’s currently untitled forthcoming album follows the release of Youth Authority, the band’s first album after a five–year hiatus and the first release on the Madden brothers’ newly–formed MDDN label.

Sony is set to acquire a controlling stake in EMI Music Publishing having agreed to a deal valued at $2.3 billion (£1.7bn). Among the catalog EMI owns or administers are included over two million works covering iconic songs by Queen, Carole King and the Motown catalogue, as well as more current songs from Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Drake, Sam Smith, P!nk, Pharrell Williams, Calvin Harris, Fetty Wap, Hozier and Sia. The deal with Abu Dhabi–based Mubadala Investment Company will see Sony bringing EMI under its banner as a consolidated subsidiary. Mubadala Capital’s private equity business has controlled and managed EMI Music Publishing since 2012.

Downtown Music Publishing has signed a worldwide deal with Australian singer/songwriter Stella Donnelly. Donnelly has generated critical–acclaim in her home territory, including being named triple j’s “Unearthed Artist of the Year.” The announcement comes as Donnelly takes top honors at the Western Australian Music Awards’ (WAM) Song of the Year Awards with her single “Boys WIll Be Boys.” Donnelly’s 2017 debut EP, Thrush Metal, was released on Healthy Tapes in Australia, and reissued in the U.S. via Secretly Canadian and has led to a number of award recognitions. Her recent New Zealand–filmed video for her second single, “Mechanical Bull,” generated invitations to perform at The Great Escape and SXSW. Donnelly also performed in London as part of sold out shows for The Great Escape’s First 50 events. Downtown will provide its bespoke creative and advisory services as well as global royalty collection platform to Donnelly’s catalog, covering her debut EP and upcoming album, scheduled for release in early 2019 on Secretly Canadian worldwide.

YouTube has unveiled a new feature to over a half billion of the videos hosted on the video platform. Under the banner of "music in this video," the new offering brings an expanded credit listing to songs heard across a number of videos including official artist clips as well as content including recorded music uploaded by users, and DJ sets, short films, beauty vlogs and gamer videos. Users can select the "Show more" link currently listed under a video's description to view available information for artist and songwriters, as well as labels and/or publishers and links to official artist channels and music videos if available. According to YouTube, the offering of song credits and discovery links for millions of fan–uploaded content marks the first for any platform with the new feature powered by its Content ID system.

In additional YouTube news, the company has rebooted its streaming offering. The service features multiple subscriptions tiers and an ad–supported version. YouTube Music launched initially in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and South Korea with Canada and a number for European territories set to roll–out soon. With the new launch, YouTube Red now runs as YouTube Premium including YouTube Music’s perks as well as access to YouTube Originals.

The Women Nation Fund has been established by Live Nation to invest in female–led live music businesses. As an early–stage investment fund, the Women Nation Fund will identify, fund and grow female–led festivals, events and promotion companies globally. Eligible business must be founded by a female and focused on concert promotion, festivals or live venue management. Selected businesses will have access to Live Nation resources including strategic advisory, industry contacts and mentorship. The evaluating team for the Women Nation Fund includes Live Nation female executives Anna Sjolund (Co–MD/Head Promoter, Live Nation Sweden), Amy Corbin (Promoter, C3), Virginia Davis (Founder, G Major Management), Amy Howe (COO, Ticketmaster), Lesley Olenik (VP, Touring), Maura Gibson (President, Frontgate Ticketing), Kelly Chappel (VP, Touring) and Carrie Davis (CCO).

A new partnership has been finalized between Fearless Records and Razor & Tie to see the latter operating as an imprint under the Fearless banner. Both labels are owned by Concord Music and the move seeks to build on Fearless’ reach and impact while bringing the label’s creative marketing to the roster at Razor & Tie.

London–based Kilimanjaro Live has added two new promoters to its booking team in Jamie Anderson, previously with PCL Presents in Scotland, and Peter Tomsen, who came to the firm in 2017 under the company's internship program. Past experience for Anderson includes work on shows for the likes of Catfish and The Bottlemen, Jack White, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, Liam Gallagher, Vampire Weekend, Haim and Arcade Fire, as well as close involvement in Scotland’s biggest multi–venue festival, Glasgow’s Stag & Dagger Festival. Anderson will assume responsibility for booking and promoting his own acts in addition to contributing to the Kilimanjaro festival program. Denmark–born Tomsen, who had been a promoter assistant, will work with new music artists and singer/songwriters.

Concord Music has finalized two new deals in the form of a worldwide agreement with singer/musician/songwriter/film composer Sean Lennon as well as a global publishing agreement with artist/songwriter, Teddy Sinclair. The deal with Lennon covers his catalogue as well as his upcoming sophomore full–length scheduled for release next year on ATO Records. Sinclair’s deal encompasses her forthcoming writing.

A&R Worldwide has learned that A&R executive Patrick Waters has joined the Nashville–based creative team for Warner Bros. Records (WBR). The move to WBR marks Waters’ return to the label having served on the Los Angeles–based team for the label previously. Since his prior stint with WBR, Waters has held roles on the A&R team for Interscope Records in Nashville as well as tour manager for The Cadillac Three. Waters got his start in the music industry with Maverick Records.

Banc of California Stadium, downtown LA’s newest venue, has made moves to bring concerts into the home of the LAFC as it has tapped Adam Friedman to lead the newly–created entertainment operations. Friedman’s background includes roles as EVP and Division Head for House of Blues Concerts and as CEO of Nederlander Concerts as well as the first President of Entertainment for Banc of California. The first concert to take place in the 23,000 capacity stadium will by iHeartRadio’s KIIS FM Wango Tango next month. Alongside concerts, radio shows, festivals and corporate events, Friedman is also in the midst of setting up international soccer matches at the stadium with BOCS Entertainment hosting the stadium's first international friendly match between LAFC and German Bundesliga Club Borussia Dortmund (BVB) tomorrow.

A&R Worldwide has learned that former Roc Nation and Seven Corners Music A&R executive Raj Jadeja has joined the creative team at BMG Music Publishing and will be based out of the company's Beverly Hills office. Jadeja will report to BMG Co–Heads of A&R, Shani Gonzales and Monti Olson.

A new label is set to be launched by leading management company Prolifica with Two Door Cinema Club and Circa Waves, two of the firm’s biggest acts as its first signings. Prolifica Inc will release new music from both acts who have parted ways with their major label deals with Parlophone and Virgin EMI respectively. Prolifica Inc will roll–out as a partnership between the management firm and PIAS and will focus on its initial two signings, with other artists to follow including acts not managed by Prolifica. Prolifica will also set–up its own publishing operations. The new label seeks to secure short term deals with a focus on the alternative rock arena.

Epic Records has tapped industry veteran Dontay Thompson as Sr. VP, Rhythm/Crossover Promotion. Thompson comes to Epic from his most recent role as Sr. VP of Promotion for Entertainment One. He will transition from NYC to Los Angeles, and report to Rick Sackheim, Epic’s EVP. Across his seven year tenure with Entertainment One, Thompson headed the company’s radio promotion team covering the urban, rhythm and Top 40 formats. Prior, Thompson had served as VP of Promotion at Bad Boy Entertainment and National Director of Rhythm/Crossover Promotion at J Records as well as a stint with former industry publication Radio & Records as Rhythmic Editor. His resume also includes time as Music Director and on–air personality for Portland, Oregon’s KXJM.

Psy
After eight years, Psy has parted ways with YG Entertainment, the label who guided the success of the global hit “Gangnam Style” as well as additional tracks such as “Gentleman” and “Hangover.” Psy first came to YG in 2010, with the company home to a number of popular South Korean acts such as BigBang, CL and BlackPink. A statement from YG Entertainment to South Korean media revealed an amicable parting. A report from Yonhap stated that Psy is expected to launch his own management firm.

Universal Music Publishing Australia has signed Sydney based singer/songwriter Odette to a global publishing deal. Odette emerged in 2017 with her debut single, “Watch Me Read You,” which landed at No.56 on triple J’s 2017 Hottest 100. Her follow–up piano–driven ballad “Collide” was also well received. “Take It To The Heart,” her latest single, came alongside the announcement of her debut album To A Stranger, scheduled for release in July via EMI Music Australia. Over the past eighteen months Odette has been in the studio with Charlie Hugall (Florence + the Machine, Ed Sheeran, Kaiser Chiefs), Jason Cox (Blur, Gorillaz, Jamie T), Alex Hope (Troye Sivan, Broods), Sarah Aarons (Zedd, Dua Lipa), Matt Hales (Aqualung, Lianne La Havas) and Paul Mac (The Dissociatives, Silverchair).

Evan Lamberg
Evan Lamberg, Universal Music Publishing Group’s President, North America, has been named as City Of Hope’s Music, Film and Entertainment Industry Board President. The two–year role will see Lamberg leading efforts for the Music, Film and Entertainment Industry Group, which includes a diverse range of industry executives from all sectors of the industry. Lamberg steps into the role which had previously been held by Peter Gray, General Manager and EVP, Promotion & Media, Warner Bros. Records. Having been an active board member for six years, Lamberg also serves as Co–Chairman of Songs of Hope, an event that honors songwriters, which has generated over $3.7 million for City of Hope.

New numbers from Apple CEO Tim Cook have revealed the Apple Music streaming service has crossed the 50 million subscriber threshold. The figures total includes 8 million free trial users with paid subscriptions increasing by 2 million from last month. Spotify still tops Apple Music in the streaming race for total subscriber numbers however, Apple’s is increasing subscribership at a fast pace. Cook also commented that Apple is looking to be more aggressive in the streaming video and original TV/film arena.

Merlin has become the latest party to sell its shares in Spotify as the independent label rights organization has sold off its entire equity stake. Merlin joins Sony and Warner in the group of companies that has begun to sell of its shares in the streaming platform. Merlin has placed itself as the first of the group to pass revenues along it its members, who will in turn be responsible for passing them along to their artists.

Warner Music Group (WMG) has promoted Kate Logan to General Counsel, International, based at the company’s London offices and reporting to Paul Robinson, EVP and General Counsel. Her new role will have her overseeing all of WMG’s legal and business affairs activities outside the U.S. Since 2013, Logan had served as Sr. VP of Legal Affairs for WMG. The move comes as Chris Ancliff, who was General Counsel, International from 2009, parts ways with the company. Prior to WMG, Logan had a seven year stint with EMI Music, where she held various roles including Sr. VP Legal Affairs. Prior, she was an associate at Allen & Overy, having begun her career at CMS Cameron McKenna.

Following the success of two Chinese distribution deals between STX Entertainment, dick clark productions and Tencent, the group revealed last week another partnership to see the Billboard Music Awards brought to China for the next three years. The three firms had previously joined forces to bring the country the 2018 Golden Globes and Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. STXdigital will, via a partnership with Tencent, oversee the three year–long distribution arrangement with both companies working together to curate original red carpet content from the BBMAs.

PRS for Music has announced a new Tariff LP with changes to see reduced rates for festivals. PRS’ Popular Music Concert Tariff (Tariff LP) covers the licensing policy and charges for the use of copyright music controlled by PRS for Music at popular events and festivals. A new royalty rate within the tariff for qualifying festivals will see the royalty rate reduced from 3% to 2.5% or 2.7%. The royalty rate for concerts meanwhile will increase from 3% to 4% or 4.2%. The new tariff will be effective from June 11th and will apply to events on–sale on or after this date. A consultation on Tariff LP launched in April 2015. The Association of Independent Festivals (AIF) made the argument for festivals to be treated differently to concerts at an early stage and has long campaigned on this issue since the consultation.

CTS Eventim is acquiring a controlling stake in leading Spanish promoter, Doctor Music. Eventim already counts entradas.com, one of Spain's leading ticketing providers, under its banner. The acquisition will also encompass Big Tours S.L. and In Cow We Trust S.L., and comes following four acquisitions for CTS Eventim since September. Among the shows in the works for Doctor Music are included Beth Ditto, Bruno Mars, Camila Cabello, Jason Derulo, Katy Perry, Parov Stelar, Shawn Mendes and Texas. Doctor Music also revealed last year that after a 20–year break, it will be re–launching Spain's Doctor Music Festival in the Pyrenean village of Escalarre in July 2019.

U.K. indie physical distribution company, Proper, has continued to expand with the hiring of three new team members across its London and Dartford offices as well as bringing on new client, NewState Entertainment. Joining Proper are Erika Brennan, former Sr. VP of Legal and Business Affairs at BMG U.K. and previously at Union Square Music for over 10 years, as Head of Business and Commercial Affairs; Sue Brown, whose resume includes roles with Plangent Visions, Zomba Music and Union Square Music, as Royalties Manager; and Pete Dodge, who has been tapped to provide project management overview across a series of planned developments to the company’s existing services and systems. Dodge’s long–time background in the independent music sector includes time at Kobalt, IODA, PIAS and Rough Trade. Additionally, Proper’s physical distribution deal with London–based dance music and entertainment group NewState Entertainment will cover the U.K., Ireland, U.S. and Canada.

Phoenix O’Neill is a London–based 23 year–old indie pop singer–songwriter. Just two years ago, her amazing voice and her intricate and dark songs caught the interest of producer James Sanger, best known for his work with Dido, Keane and Brian Eno. James had just formed a production partnership with Paul Kilmister called SangMister and since then, James and Paul have been working with Phoenix, developing her unique, and vibey style for SangMister Music. Her spellbinding vocals have been compared to such talents as Amy Winehouse and Elle King, with haunting melodies similar to Massive Attack and Portishead. Her previous single “Cruel World” earned airplay on KROQ Los Angeles, KNDD Seattle, KNRK Portland, KCJK Kansas City, KBZT San Diego, WLKK Buffalo, KKDO Sacramento and more. Phoenix O’Neill recently performed an amazing live showcase at MUSEXPO Los Angeles and has released an EP titled Out of the Ashes. Multitalented Nick de la Hoyde was destined to forge a career in music. The Sydney–based singer–songwriter and rapper originally moved half way around the world to Spain as a teenager to pursue football. He wasn’t mentally prepared for the lonely and isolating experience that it would become, so Nick tapped into his highly creative side, allowing his innermost thoughts and feelings to flow into a journal. As time had passed, his entries turned into lyrics and he started to put them into poems. He studied YouTube videos and taught himself how to sing and while fully focused on football, music just completely took over. When he would return home for holidays, he would write songs with his older brother Joseph ‘ZU/ZU’ de la Hoyde. After nearly five years in Spain, Nick realized that music was his true passion and he returned to Australia to build a career as an artist. Unlike many artists of his generation, Nick’s music refuses to be pigeonholed into any one defined genre. Instead, his diverse style breathes life into the individuality of each of his tracks—from infectious, spoken word jams, to uplifting and expressive heartbreakers to hook–laden pop tracks and dreamy dance floor gems. Nick has received airplay support in Australia, UK, Europe, South Africa, Asia, the U.S. and his music has been added to a variety of Spotify playlists, in addition to Apple Music naming him the 'Best of the Week.' Nick recently supported American singer MAX on his Australian tour and performed at the Rolling Loud Festival in Miami alongside Wiz Khalifa and Migos.
