Scooter Braun JD Roth
SB Projects Founder, Scooter Braun, and JD Roth, Co–Founder and former CEO of 3 Ball Entertainment, have announced the launch of GoodStory Entertainment, a new unscripted content studio. GoodStory will look to develop and produce character–driven stories in the unscripted, live event, and feature documentary spaces. Backed by Braun’s Ithaca fund, GoodStory will also seek out strategic acquisitions to integrate leading unscripted production companies around the world.

Roth is credited with pioneering the concept of transformative television and is behind the production of some of the longest airing, unscripted franchises in television history including The Biggest Loser, Beauty and the Geek, Extreme Weight Loss and Bar Rescue among others. Several of 3 Ball's franchises went on to international distribution, spawning a global production firm that eventually sold to Warner Bros. in 2014.

Braun, commented, "JD is a winner and the perfect partner to build with in the unscripted space, his track record is undeniable. We look forward to making great content and investing in other talented production companies that share our values."

“I've always admired Scooter’s work professionally and have been lucky to get to know him as a friend and family man. Roth will assume a role leading business development and acquisitions, as well as CEO duties for GoodStory. He also reunites with Adam Greener, former COO of 3 Ball Entertainment and President of Maverick Television, who comes to GoodStory as Co–CEO, handling development, sales, and execution. Braun brings on his longtime COO Scott Manson, who spearheaded the deal, to run point with him from the SB Projects side.

In September of 2017, the Indian music industry welcomed its first ever all–inclusive and unique music conference organized by Truly Musical LLP, the special events division of leading Indian artist management agency, TM Talent Management. Elektra Music Group, a stand–alone, fully staffed label group, will launch on October 1st. Under the Elektra Music Group banner will be included Elektra, Fueled By Ramen (FBR), Roadrunner, Low Country Sound and Black Cement Records. Leading the new label group will be Co–Presidents, Mike Easterlin and Gregg Nadel, who will report to Atlantic Records Group Chairman & CEO, Craig Kallman, and Chairman & COO, Julie Greenwald. Elektra Music Group’s roster at its launch will be home to the likes of twenty one pilots, Zac Brown Band, Sturgill Simpson, Brandi Carlile, Fitz and the Tantrums, Paramore, Slipknot, Panic! At The Disco, Coheed and Cambria, Kaleo, Gojira and others.

The label group will open its doors with a more than 60 member team covering all key music company divisions, including A&R, Artist Development, Business & Legal Affairs, International, Marketing, Promotion, Publicity, Sales & Streaming, and Video. The departments will be headed and staffed by current members of the Atlantic, Elektra, FBR, and Roadrunner teams, as well as new hires.

Easterlin has been President of FBR and Roadrunner Records since January of 2016 and had previously served as General Manager of both labels since 2012. His leadership has seen FBR behind the breakthrough success of Grammy winners twenty one pilots, Paramore, and fun., as well as acts such as Panic! At The Disco, Young the Giant and others. Roadrunner remains a hard rock and metal mecca with a roster that includes Slipknot, Theory of a Deadman, Trivium, Coheed and Cambria and Gojira. Easterlin originally joined Lava/Atlantic as Sr. VP of Promotion in 2005, having previously held roles at Virgin Records and Island Def Jam.

Nadel has been President of Elektra Records since January of 2017, having served as the label’s General Manager since 2015. Counting 21–years in the Atlantic family, he joined the company in 1997 and moved up the A&R ranks. He has signed Grammy winners, Zac Brown Band and Sturgill Simpson, acclaimed Icelandic band, Kaleo and others. As Atlantic’s Sr. VP of A&R and Marketing, Nadel spearheaded all three album campaigns for Ed Sheeran. Additionally, he forged the partnership between Elektra and Grammy–winning producer Dave Cobb’s Low Country Sound label.


George Ergatoudis Mark Williamson
Last week, Spotify saw two of its key executives parting ways with the company, joining a growing list of high–profile team members to transition away from the streaming service.

Among the staff moves is included the departure of George Ergatoudis, who had most recently served as Spotify’s Head of Music Culture, International Shows & Editorial. Ergatoudis is expected to assume his new role leading U.K. operations for Spotify competitor, Apple Music, later this summer. Ergatoudis transitioned to Spotify from BBC Radio 1 & 1Xtra where he had served as Head of Music. He brought with him a number of former BBC playlisting execs who helped boost the localized feel of the service's playlist offerings.

Additionally, LA–based Global Head of Artist and Industry Partnerships, Mark Williamson, also revealed his departure to colleagues recently after seven years with Spotify. Williamson, who started as a Special Projects Manager before becoming Head of Artist Services, played a key role in Spotify's Manager Partner Program. Williamson has not revealed his next moves.

Ergatoudis and Williamson’s exits add to the recent Spotify exodus that has included departures from Global Head of Artist and Label Marketing, Dave Rocco, who recently joined Universal Music Group as EVP, Creative; Angela Watts who left her post as a senior marketing executive; Global Programming Head of Hip–Hop, Tuma Basa; and Kevin Brown, who parted ways in December as Head of U.K. and International Artist and Label Services after five years with the streaming service.


Urban–centric media and entertainment company, Mass Appeal, and Universal Music Group (UMG) have finalized a multi–year global agreement encompassing the exclusive distribution of physical and digital formats for recorded music and short–form video content and providing Mass Appeal the ability to strategically leverage UMG’s marketing and promotion teams globally for select artists and projects. Additionally, UMG will distribute Mass Appeal’s catalog of releases from artists such as DJ Shadow, J Dilla and Run the Jewels, as well as the highly–anticipated 11th solo record from Nas which Mass Appeal will release in collaboration with Def Jam Recordings. Following a year where UMG successfully led Mass Appeal’s $6 million Series A funding round, the agreement will give Mass Appeal and its label the resources to expand its global presence. Mass Appeal’s recent projects include developing and producing Rapture on Netflix, creating SoundCloud’s first advertising campaign, and helping launch Google’s first–ever hip–hop Doodle, an interactive turntable to celebrate key moments in hip–hop music and culture.

In other UMG news, the music company, and All Def Media (ADM), one of the fastest–growing hip–hop multi–platform media brands announced today an expanded relationship that encompasses the development of long and short–form video content, live events and social media content. ADM will broaden its programming and marketing relationship with UMG to build on its popular digital, branded and platform series as well as grow its long–form TV and film offerings, providing additional opportunities for UMG’s artists. In total, ADM regularly generates over 300 million monthly views for its programs and sits among the highest engagement brands on platforms such as Facebook and YouTube. ADM’s All Def LA monthly residency has also become a popular fixture of downtown Los Angeles, showcasing the new generation of hip–hop talent. Additionally, the companies revealed their first three premium collaborations as Crossroads 24, a series that chronicles a pivotal day in an artist’s life; the expansion of the All Def Live Leaks franchise, which showcases leading artists via innovative audio and visual settings; and Plan B, a program that gives artists a chance to experience a second career choice.

AWAL, the recordings company under the Kobalt Music banner, announced last week the appointment of Michael Pukownik to Sr. VP, Head of Artist Marketing for N. America. The role will see Pukownik based in the company’s Los Angeles office, overseeing artist marketing campaigns for the AWAL roster as well as leading digital marketing strategy. Previously, Pukownik served as VP of Marketing at Warner Bros. Records for three years and prior to that, had a decade–long stint with EMI/UMG/Capitol Records, working on creating new digital supply chains for the global digital operations division and eventually transitioning to Sr. Director of Digital Marketing. Pukownik came to the music industry after work with DoubleClick Inc and Booz Allen & Hamilton.

Pandora announced last week that it will team up with Snap Inc. as the music streaming launch partner for Snap Kit, Snap's new platform for developers. The partnership will see Pandora listeners able to send their favorite songs to friends and family via unique song cards featuring album art on top of an animated background. Additionally, recipients will have the option to swipe up to listen directly on Pandora. This integration expands Pandora's social sharing capabilities by tapping into Snapchat's massive audience, while enhancing music discovery on both platforms. Over the coming weeks, Pandora listeners will be able to share these song cards one–on–one, to a group of friends, or to their Story. The new share feature will soon roll out to Pandora and Snap users in the U.S.

A&R Worldwide–supported breakthrough Aussie act Sheppard have seen there sophomore full–length Watching the Sky taking the No.1 spot on the ARIA Albums chart, beating out acts such as Kanye West and Post Malone for the honors. The band's new single "Hometown" has received significant support from radio and Seven’s House Rules promos. Sheppard's No.1 with Watching the Sky surpasses the success for their debut, Bombs Away, which debuted at No.2. Throughout their success, Sheppard has remained an independent band, making their own decisions and building a dedicated team that has proven a strong alternative to the majors. Watching the Sky marks the fifth Australian album to top the ARIA albums chart this year, with all five coming from indie labels. Sheppard's early success was supported by A&R Worldwide who helped build initial awareness within the global music community. A&R Worldwide's strategic development support, as well as strong radio impact in the United States and internationally, triggered activity in Australia which subsequently led to the band's first Platinum–selling debut in the their native territory. peermusic has appointed Spencer Lee as Managing Director of Asia Pacific, it was announced today by Mary Megan Peer, the company's Deputy CEO and President, Asia Pacific and Strategic Markets. Spencer, who steps into the role held by Flora Yip as she retires, takes over responsibility for territories including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines. Lee comes to peermusic following more than 20 years with Hong Kong’s PRO, known as CASH. He started as Financial Controller and was appointed Deputy CEO in 2000, responsible for general operation including royalty distribution, information technology and international affairs. Lee also played a key role in the establishment of CASH’s regional digital initiatives in Asia Pacific.

W Hotels is bringing back its Wake Up Call luxury festival experience this fall. With stops in Hollywood, Barcelona and Bali to kick-off September 1st, Wake Up Call offers a unique festival experience that bypasses camping and lines to offer attendees ticket packages that include accommodation and festival access.

YouTube Premium, formerly YouTube Red, has officially rolled out with YouTube also revealing its Music offering is now available in 12 additional countries. Now available to users in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and South Korea, the service is set to also enter Austria, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Russia, Spain, Sweden and the U.K. Having launched in late May, YouTube Music features a free offering, as well as an ad-free alternative for subscribers. Users of YouTube Premium can access all YouTube Music features as well as original YouTube video content. Google Play Music subscribers automatically receive access to YouTube Music Premium.

Live Nation has in recent months expanded its Colorado-based team with the hire of local promoters Wes Samuel, Brennan Bryarly, Rikki Aston, Geoff Brent and most recently, Lance Dunlap. Reporting to Eric Pirritt, Live Nation U.S. Concerts' President are Samuel, Bryarly and Dunlap, with Aston and Brent reporting to Ben Weeden, COO, Clubs & Theatres. The group, bringing with them 40 years of experience, join Live Nation's Colorado operations that books talent and promotes shows at venues including The Fillmore Auditorium, Summit, Marquis Theater, Denver's Pepsi Center, Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Paramount Theatre.

Deutsche Grammophon (DG), the world’s oldest and most renowned classical music label, will celebrate its 120th anniversary this year with a wide–ranging and ambitious international program of activities to celebrate the Yellow Label’s past, present and future. Across the 2018/2019 season, DG120 will celebrate the cultural importance of classical music and the incredible artists who present it. Among the program is featured a number of activities, events, rare archival treasures and a new product suite. DG120 will include a global series of DG120 gala concerts with leading DG artists, including a historic launch concert in Beijing’s legendary forbidden city area; special DG120 editions of cult Yellow Lounge club nights planned for Beijing, Hong Kong, Seoul, Shanghai, Taipei and Tokyo; the shellac project – rediscovered and previously unreleased tracks digitised from the historic DG vaults in cooperation with Google Arts & Culture reflecting the unique history of the label; and 120 years of unrivalled recording history available with release of deluxe box set DG120: The Anniversary Edition and Karajan–Beethoven art edition series.

Long–time Matador Records General Manager, Natalie Judge, has revealed she is parting ways with her role after an 11–year stint with the label. Matador, part of the Beggars Group, is home to a roster of acts that includes Queens of the Stone Age, Interpol, Belle and Sebastian, Spoon and Savages (a Judge signing). With its main NYC offices covering N. America, Matador’s London operations, led by Judge, focus on the rest of the world including the U.K. and Europe, Australia and Japan.

Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) has added singer/songwriter Greylan James to their roster via a global publishing deal. James’ first publishing deal came at age 18 when he was signed by Nashville Songwriter Hall of Fame inductee Bob DiPiero. Having appeared on season four of NBC’s The Voice, James also featured in Guitar Center Magazine’s Brotherhood of the Guitar Top 100, ranking the top guitarists in the world under the age of 21. UMPG Nashville’s VP of A&R/Special Projects, Ron Stuve, and Sr. Creative Director, Travis Gordon, led the deal.

A&R Worldwide has learned that Chris Cline has transitioned from his role as an A&R Consultant for Atlantic Records’ Nashville–based operations to his new position as A&R Manager for Canvasback Music. Cline heads from Nashville to NYC to join the Atlantic subsidiary which is home to acts such as alt–J, Grouplove and Frightened Rabbit among others.

Daniel Bei has been appointed Managing Director of Ticketmaster Italy. Having worked in the live entertainment arena for several years, Bei’s past roles include that as President of the World Trade Centre Italy. Additionally, he was part of the management team for some of Italy’s leading venues including the Milan Forum and the Rome, as well as managing the Bologna Sports Palace. In the five years he served as General Manager of Brussels’ Forest Nation, Bei broke the record of concerts organized, according to Ticketmaster. Bei also led the launch of the Palais 12, one of Belgium’s largest indoor venues.

Amazon Music’s U.K. offering has rolled–out a new, weekly emerging artist promotion called the Weekly One. The new feature will highlight a single song from an emerging artist weekly. Having initially started in the U.S., the British edition kicked off on Friday with Macklemore collaborator, R&B act Dan Caplen.

For the first time ever, the 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be streamed internationally via Amazon. As of July 1st, the event’s 33rd edition will be available for viewing across 34 countries and in eight different languages. Prime subscribers are able to view the program through Amazon’s Prime Video Direct Program, a self–service program for studios, distributors and content creators.

Last week, U.S. District Court Judge Richard Leon issued his decision to allow the $80 billion merger between AT&T and Time Warner to proceed despite the government's challenge. The decision comes following the lawsuit filed in November by the U.S. Justice Department to block the merger. Despite the ruling that the merger doesn't violate antitrust law, and AT&T and Time Warner’s pending deadline of June 21st in place to complete the merger, it is possible that the government could appeal the decision, despite the Justice Department opting not to seek a stay. Once Judge Leon's full written opinion is released, it will be reviewed closely by distributors such as Comcast, Verizon, Charter and others as they look to move forward on bidding for leading content companies such as Fox, CBS, Viacom, Discovery and Lionsgate.

APA has announced the promotion of Jim Osborne to Co–Head of Talent. Having previously served as VP at the company, Osborne’s new appointment sees him leading the department with Ryan Martin. In 2015, Osborne was made a partner, representing a roster that includes Gary Oldman and Mary J. Blige in addition to recent signings Tyrese Gibson and T.I. Osborne looks after the music and theatrical careers for Blige and Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson. Additional Osborne clients include Criss Angel, MacGyver's Lucas Till and George Eads, Cole Hauser, Lili Taylor and Colony's Tory Kittles. Osborne career began in the mailroom at ICM before becoming an assistant to Ed Limato. He transitioned to APA in 2011, bringing along longtime client Oldman and producing partner, Douglas Urbanski.

Primary Wave Entertainment has rolled out their new, digital–only label called Cure8. On Friday, the label released disCOVERED, Vol 1, the first in a series of compilations featuring covers from well–known artists. Vol. 1 features nine covers including Parachute's version of "The Middle," Dawin's cover of "Stitches," and Krewella's rendition of "Mine." Based out of New York, Cure8 a 50/50 partnership with each artist who appears on the compilations. Artists deliver a finished cover song and Cure8, via Primary Wave Entertainment’s in–house team, provide marketing, press, playlisting, sync opportunities and more.

Leadership Music has unveiled its Class of 2019, the program's 30th group, composed of 45 industry leaders from across the country. Nashville–based Leadership Music was founded in 1989 by twelve music industry alumni of Leadership Nashville and in that time, the national program has graduated nearly 1,200 leaders. The annual program seeks to create a forum for music industry leaders to learn as they delve into almost every segment of the music business while identifying and exploring issues currently affecting the music industry. Universal Music Latin Entertainment (UMLE) has finalized a record and co–management contract with Juanes. The move sees the singer/songwriter consolidating his relationship with UMLE through a partnership established between GTS (Universal Music’s management division) and Rebeca Leon's Lionfish Entertainment. Juanes recently completed his U.S. tour with Mon Laferte and unveiled his new single and video, "Pa ' Dentro." He also garnered two more Latin Grammy Awards for Best Pop/Rock Album and Best Alternative Song with Mis Planes Son Amarte.

ole has announced a new partnership with one of Canada’s leading radio broadcasters, Newcap Radio, and oleTV’s Paul McGuire’s Country Countdown. Starting this summer, the weekly program will be co–produced by oleTV and Newcap Radio with the audio format broadcasting across 21 Newcap Country stations nationwide. oleTV will continue to air full artist interviews in video format on oleTV’s MCN YouTube channel. Launched last year, Paul McGuire’s Country Countdown counts down the top country tracks of the week with artist interviews also incorporated. oleTV hosted under ole’s YouTube network which counts over 17 billion views across publishing, masters and A/V to date.

Ghost, a new U.K. radio promotions agency has been formed as the result of a merger between Plug Life, founded by Gregory Wells, and Paisley London, launched by Becky Richardson in 2016. Wells started his career at independent promotions company, Peer Group, before leading the radio department at Domino Records. After a three–year stint with Domino, he set up Plug Life and now represents artists such as Four Tet, Laura Marling, Neneh Cherry, Floating Points, Cigarettes After Sex and DJ Koze. Prior to launching Paisley London, Richardson was at Island Records for four years and worked on campaigns for artists including Hozier, Childish Gambino, PJ Harvey, The Weeknd and others. Her Paisley London has overseen national, specialist and community radio campaigns for a diverse range of acts that includes Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes, Dave, AlunaGeorge, Charlotte Day Wilson, Bruno Major and Ray BLK. Additional clients for Richardson include a number of festival radio stations including Reading & Leeds 2017 and this year’s new London festival, All Points East.

Freshly formed in late last year, The Vitriots are an unstoppable garage rock band from Sydney. Inspired by such acts as The White Stripes, Nirvana and Oasis, their sound comes from blending together tongue–in–cheek lyrics, bumping bass riffs and melodically brash guitars. Since releasing their debut single “Long Way Down,” The Vitriots have earned airplay from Australia via Triple J to Los Angeles via KROQ. The track has earned over 25k streams on Spotify, added to a number of playlists in South America, Europe and the UK, in addition to being included on Apple Music’s "Rock A–List" playlist. The song, produced by Dylan Adams, best known for his work with DMA’s and Sticky Fingers, features an infectious guitar melody through thrashing drums that builds tension into a rowdy anthemic chorus. The quartet are currently finishing their album, due next year, and are supporting British India on the Sydney leg of their Australian tour this month.
