As MUSEXPO prepares its re–imagined adaptation and evolution to its annual global music and media conference, Creative Summit 2019, the event has confirmed an exclusive interactive synch presence from one of the world’s leading film/TV networks and studios, NBCUniversal. Having confirmed a number of NBCUniversal’s key creative team members, the event will give MUSEXPO Creative Summit attendees an insightful look into the music engagement behind some of their favorite television shows, on–air promos, sports programs, on–demand and more, as well as the opportunity to interact with some of the studio’s leading music supervision executives. Will McDonald Shawn Cohen
As it prepares for its October 1st launch, Elektra Music Group has announced two key appointments to its A&R team. Joining as VP of A&R and Marketing is Will McDonald, based in Nashville, while Shawn Cohen is named Sr. Director of A&R, based in Los Angeles. Both report to New York–based Mike Easterlin and Gregg Nadel, Co–Presidents of Elektra Music Group.

“As we said when we announced the launch of Elektra Music Group, we’re going to be passionately devoted to long–term artist development,” said Easterlin and Nadel. “Signing and nurturing authentic artists will be at the core of everything we do, so it’s only fitting that our first staff announcement is about two of the most creative, independent–thinking young A&R people in the business. Will and Shawn come to us with great experience in discovering and working with original, compelling artists. And with Will in Nashville and Shawn in LA, we’ll solidify our cross–country A&R presence, which will enable us to build a dynamic roster of world–class talent.”

McDonald comes to Elektra after a decade with Dualtone Music Group, most recently serving as Sr. Director of A&R and Marketing. He played a key role in signing much of the company’s roster, including multi–platinum, Grammy–nominated folk–rock band the Lumineers, as well as Shovels & Rope, Shakey Graves, Mt. Joy, and others. In addition to his A&R duties, McDonald was involved in the marketing and product management of all of the label’s releases.

Cohen’s most recent role as an A&R Consultant saw him responsible for signing The Revivalists, who garnered the No.1–charting, RIAA gold single, “Wish I Knew You.” He has also worked with artists including Jillette Johnson, Allday and SPEAK. His resume includes six years at Wind–up Records, rising to Sr. Director of A&R and working with artists such as The Griswolds, Citizen Zero, Crobot, Young Guns and Filter, as well as spearheading the formation of Eclypse Records with Feenixpawl.

At its launch, Elektra Music Group will count a 60–plus member team encompassing all key music company functions such as A&R, Artist Development, Business/Legal Affairs, International, Marketing, Promotion, Publicity, Sales/Streaming, and Video.


David Dollimore & Stacey Tang
RCA U.K. has announced Stacey Tang as Managing Director for the label as she parts ways with fellow Sony Music subsidiary, Columbia Records. Tang had been serving as Co–MD of Columbia alongside Manish Arora, overseeing six U.K. No.1 albums across 2017 and more than doubling the label’s album market share.

Having joined Columbia in 2012, Tang received promotions every year up until her appointment as Co–MD. With Tang’s departure, Arora will take on the responsibilities of sole MD for the label. Tang herself enters her new role following the exit of Neil Hughes who has parted ways with RCA.

David Dollimore, President of RCA U.K. and Ministry Of Sound Recordings, said, “Stacey is one of the most respected and creative executives in the business. Her love of great music, her passion for artist development and her steely determination are totally infectious. Among the successful projects Tang has been involved across are included the release of Calvin Harris’ million–selling One Kiss as well as overseeing George Ezra’s platinum–selling No.1 sophomore effort Staying At Tamara’s. She has also led campaigns for Lotto Boyz and B Young, as well as international acts A$AP Rocky, Harry Styles, First Aid Kit, Foo Fighters, LCD Soundsystem, WizKid, Kings Of Leon, Mark Ronson, Arcade Fire and Khalid.


Tina Funk
Concord Music has appointed former Vevo Germany GM, Tina Funk, to the newly–created role of Managing Director, Publishing for Concord Music in Germany. Funk will head up the expansion of Concord’s combined music publishing businesses in Germany across administration, synchronization and creative, while reporting directly to Concord Music’s European President of Publishing, John Minch. Based at Concord Music’s Berlin headquarters, Funk’s new leadership role will focus on both domestic and international A&R as well as the creation of next level infrastructure that will look to secure and redouble Concord’s position as a market leader in publishing.

Funk will also work closely with Concord Music’s global creative team, led by London–based Executive Vice President of Worldwide Creative, Kim Frankiewicz, and strengthen domestic and international sync exploitation in tandem with the international sync team, led by Sara Lord, VP of International Synchronization in London.

“Tina will be integral to the evolution of our international publishing business,” states Concord Music Chief Publishing Executive, Jake Wisely. “Working closely with John, Kim, Sara and the entire international administration team, she is backed by one of the world’s most ambitious music companies and armed with a stellar roster and staggering array of copyrights.”

As one of Germany’s most successful music executives, Funk’s background covers experience across technology, streaming, IP and rights management including senior positions at major and independent record companies. She most recently served as Vevo’s GM for Germany from its launch in 2013 and built the local team and activities across content and programming. Prior to Vevo, Funk was Sr. VP Music at EMI Music Germany, responsible for day–to–day running of all frontline label divisions. During her tenure at EMI she also served as MD of the German subsidiary of Mute and held senior management positions at V2 Music and Virgin Records. In 2008, she founded Creative Lobby alongside entertainment lawyers ScheuermannWesterhoff Strittmatter, with the firm consulting creative companies and artists on the development, marketing and protection of their IP.

Rich Robinson has been tapped as EVP, Sync and Creative Services for Warner/Chappell's newly–formed Creative Services division. Based in London, Robinson marks the first major executive appointment for the division outside of the U.S. He reports to Carianne Marshall, Warner/Chappell’s COO, and will be tasked with building the Creative Services team outside of the U.S. while overseeing Warner/Chappell’s sync strategy internationally. The new division looks to tap into the publisher's A&R, sync and digital teams globally, identifying new commercial and creative opportunities for its songwriters, both emerging and established with additional appointments expected over the coming months. Robinson’s new role will also see him leading the publisher's sync business in all territories outside the U.S., working closely with Warner/Chappell U.K.'s MD, Mike Smith. In his five years with Warner Music, Robinson placed a large number of tracks in major ad campaigns and spearheaded and led music supervision for films and TV such as Residue (Netflix), and feature films Kill Your Friends and I, Tonya. Prior to Warner, Robinson served as a music consultant for Saatchi & Saatchi and then joined EMI as a Business Development Manager in 2006, rising to eventually becoming VP of Synchronization for Europe and the Rest of the World.

Apple’s acquisition of Shazam has been officially cleared by the European Union (EU) for the latter’s supposed $400 million deal to purchase the music discovery app. EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said, “After thoroughly analyzing Shazam’s user and music data, we found that their acquisition by Apple would not reduce competition in the digital music streaming market. Data is key in the digital economy. We must therefore carefully review transactions which lead to the acquisition of important sets of data, including potentially commercially sensitive ones.”

Columbia Records has appointed Jenifer Mallory as EVP/GM for the label it was announced last week. Based out of the company’s NYC offices, Mallory reports to Columbia’s Chairman and CEO, Ron Perry. Mallory, who had been promoted to EVP, International Marketing for Sony Music Entertainment earlier this year, assumes the role following the departure of Joel Klaiman last month. Her new role will see Mallory with oversight across marketing, publicity, promotion, digital, sales, content, licensing and brand partnerships for the label. Other past roles for Mallory include stops at Sony Pictures, as well as part of Columbia’s digital marketing team before transitioning to Sony Music.

Downtown Music Publishing has signed the Teskey Brothers to a global publishing deal outside Australia. The Teskey Brothers, composed of brothers Josh and Sam Teskey along with Brendon Love and Liam Gough, originated in The Yarra Valley, just outside Melbourne. The group have performed at SXSW and The Great Escape, as well as shows in Australia, the U.S., and Japan. Following dates in New Zealand, they will head back to the studio to record their highly–anticipated sophomore full–length, the follow–up to 2017’s self–produced, independent album, Half Mile Harvest. Half Mile Harvest debuted in the ARIA Top 20 albums and at No.1 on the Australian Independent Record Labels Association (AIR) album chart, while garnering an AIR Awards nomination for Best Independent Blues & Roots album. The group's signing to Downtown follows recent additional signing announcements to Mushroom Music Publishing/Ivy League in Australia and Glassnote Records for other territories.

Sony Music Entertainment Australia has announced the launch of a brand new JV label, New Tribe Music, alongside widely–recognized writer and producer Jon Hume, and Karen Hume. New Tribe Music, which will offer a strong focus on collaboration across a diverse and talented team, will be led by Jon Hume, who is credited with more than half a billion streams on Spotify as a songwriter and producer. Hume has also topped the charts as an artist himself with Evermore and is currently spending his third week at No.1 on the ARIA charts with his co–write with Dean Lewis on "Be Alright." The first artist signed to New Tribe Music is Kira Puru, who has just announced the release of her self–titled EP for September 20th. The five track EP features single "Molotov" which has garnered over half a million streams, as well as "Tension" which is nearing 1.6 million streams.

John Legend, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice became the newest members of the EGOT club last night with an Emmy Award win for NBC's live version of Jesus Christ Superstar. The Emmy wins, alongside their Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards, make the trio the 13th, 14th and 15th members of the EGOT collective which includes the likes of Robert Lopez (youngest person ever to achieve EGOT status at 38), Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks, Rita Moreno, Mike Nichols and Whoopi Goldberg.

MTV International is rolling out a U.K. adaptation of its iconic Yo! MTV Raps hip–hop franchise. The offering is also set for release throughout Germany, Southeast Asia and Africa. Having launched in 1988, the show played a key role in rap music's rise to popularity globally with the reboot planning twenty new localized episodes. The UK edition is scheduled to start September 25th with launches in Germany, Southeast Asia and Africa set for 2019. The new international Yo! programming will be hosted by two local presenters, featuring regional emerging talent, in–studio/remote performances, and special segments.

A new partnership has been finalized between Warner Music Australia and Inertia Music for physical music distribution in their market. Starting October 1st, under the banner of the Music Distribution Coalition (MDC), the partnership will take over the entire physical distribution and supply chain management for the major and the Australian indie distributor and label services company. The new partnership will run in tandem with Inertia Music’s existing physical product activities, including providing sales and distribution services in Australia for Beggars Group, Elefant Traks, Flightless, Kobalt and Stop Start as well as others. A joint team will manage the MDC, overseeing all of Warner Music Australia’s physical repertoire operations including production, warehousing, distribution, shipping, shared retail sales and customer service.

Cooking Vinyl has announced the appointment of Ryan Farley to Managing Director, Cooking Vinyl Publishing. The former Warner/Chappell A&R Manager joins the independent as it refocuses its publishing business as a frontline operation to sit alongside the company’s record label. Farley parted ways with Warner/Chappell four years ago and since that time has been heading his own management and A&R consultancy firm, Knew Knowledge Music. Farley’s management clients have included writer/producer Matty Benbrook, mixer Jason Cox, songwriter Josh Breaks and artist Amy Lawton. On the consulting front, he’s worked with F Block Music Publishing (as Head of A&R), John Woolf's A–List Management (Elderbrook, Wiley, Carla–Marie Williams, Rude Kid), Mike Sault's Saulty Dog Management, German publisher Boy Wonder Music, Danish Neo–Soul act Black Dylan, and Nashville artist Sarah Darling. In addition to his role with Cooking Vinyl, Farley will continue to manage Matty Benbrook and A&R Sarah Darling's new album.

Ben Dickey
Following up on the critical success of BLAZE, directed and co–written by Ethan Hawke, alongside the acclaim for musician Ben Dickey in his first acting role as Blaze Foley, Hawke, Charlie Sexton and Louis Black have launched the SexHawkeBlack record label. Dickey, who was awarded a U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Achievement in Acting at the Sundance Film Festival this year, will be the first act signed to the new imprint, a partnership with Nashville–based Dualtone label. SexHawkeBlack will be led by music industry veteran Erika Pinktipps. Last week saw the release of Dickey’s three song EP, It’s All Different, which coincided with his appearance on the Today Show and NBC’s Jimmy Fallon, along with Hawke. The three song EP was recorded earlier this year, with Sexton as producer, at the iconic Arlyn Studios with the full–length album, A Glimmer on the Outskirts, set for release in January 2019. Dickey has been asked to perform at this week’s Americana Music Festival & Conference in Nashville, TN. BLAZE had its NYC premiere last week at the IFC Center and opens nationwide on September 21st.

Driven by the success of global artists such as Ed Sheeran, Rag’n’Bone Man, Sam Smith and Dua Lipa, the U.K. music industry saw exports reaching an 18–year pinnacle for 2017. BPI revealed overseas earnings had increased by 12% for U.K. labels to just over £408 million, marking the highest total recorded by the label trade body since it began tracking export sales. The growth brings total export sales to more than £5 billion since 2000. Export sales were led by Europe at a 42% share with the U.S. at 35%. BPI also saw large boosts to sales growth in territories such as Brazil, India and China.

Music industry veteran Gary Gersh has been promoted to President of Global Touring and Talent for AEG Presents. In his new role, Gersh will lead all aspects of the promoter's global touring operations and talent relations. Additionally, former LoyalT Management Co–Founder Rich Schaefer is promoted to Sr. VP of AEG Presents' Global Touring Division, with Rich Holtzman, former manager of Portugal. The Man and former StubHub exec, joining the team as Sr. VP of Artist Development and Marketing. Additional members of the leadership team behind the new global touring division are AEG Presents EVP Larry Vallon, Debra Rathwell (Sr. VP), Ali Harnell (Sr. VP), Bobby Reynolds (Sr. VP), and VP and GM Cody Lauzier. Gersh came to AEG in 2015 from management firm The Artist Organization where he served as Chief Executive. A veteran label executive, Gersh was involved in EMI America's launch and he is a Founding Partner of Geffen Records, later serving as President and CEO at Capitol/Blue Note Records. Having worked with acts such as Soundgarden, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Beastie Boys and the Foo Fighters, Gersh's background also includes leading management companies G.A.S. Entertainment and TAO. In the wake of the new division's launch, AEG's partner companies including Goldenvoice, Bowery Presents, Concerts West, Messina Touring Group, Marshall Arts LTD, and Madison House Presents, will maintain independent operations. AEG Presents has also revealed the transition of current staffers to the new division with promotions for Nicole Neal to VP of Marketing and Lindsay Dworman to Touring Coordinator, as well as global talent buyer's Jonny Shuman, Rob Owens, Elliot Lefkowitz and Casey McCabe joining the division.

Carolyn Williams
RCA Records has announced the promotion of Carolyn Williams to EVP of Marketing. Williams, who will remain based out of the label’s NYC headquarters, had most recently served as Sr. VP of Marketing. Her new role will see her leading RCA’s marketing team as well as campaigns for artists including Childish Gambino, H.E.R. and SZA. In her previous post, Williams led urban marketing at RCA, working with acts such as Chris Brown, D’Angelo, Alicia Keys, A$AP Rocky, WizKid and on the soundtracks for HBO’s Insecure. Her major label career began at J Records working on lifestyle marketing campaigns for the likes of G Jazmine Sullivan, Busta Rhymes, Rhymefest, Monica, Mario and Fantasia. Other previous roles include those at Soul Brothers Records, Penalty Records and Tommy Boy Records.

Vevo has named Alan Price CEO for the video streaming company with Price having served as interim CEO since December of last year. Price has also been part of Vevo’s senior leadership team since it launched in 2009. The news comes as Vevo recently revealed plans to shut down its own consumer website and app as it directs focus on its YouTube partnership. Before becoming Vevo’s CFO in 2009, Price had spent a number of years at Sony Music Entertainment in various senior finance roles including, most recently, Sr. VP of Finance and Operations for Columbia/Epic Label Group.

Big Machine Label Group’s BMLG Records has added widely–successful outfit Lady Antebellum to their roster. With seven Grammy wins to their name, the group’s previous seven studio full–lengths have all been released via Capitol Nashville. Among the group’s additional credits since their 2008 debut are included nine No.1 Country hits, two No.1’s at AC and a No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Spain’s music industry has seen a significant boost in income from streaming over the first six months of 2018. Streaming income reached 73.5%, accounting for nearly three quarters of music sales, according to Spanish music industry association Promusicae. Additionally, revenue from subscriptions grew 53%. Despite the large spike in the two sectors, the country saw only a small increase in overall music sales of .36%. The findings reveal a shift to the Spanish music landscape which had historically consumed music through illegal file–sharing. Other notable figures from Promusicae’s report include: a decrease in ad–supported streaming income of 62% from 21.8 million euros over the first half of 2017 to 8.4 million euros for 2018; a decrease in download sales of 23% year–to–year; and YouTube income increasing only 6.9% year–to–year to 11.5 million euros.

United Talent Agency’s (UTA) Board of Directors revealed last week the promotions of four senior executives to Partner. Among those elevated are included René Jones, Jim Meenaghan, Rich Shuter and David Spingarn who join CEO Andrew Thau among the non–agent partners for the agency. In adding the four new executives, UTA counts 58 men and women as Partners across its businesses.

Atlantic Podcasts has announced the launch of INSIDE THE ALBUM, an exclusive new documentary series going in–depth on how great albums get made, covering records spanning Atlantic Records’ current artists and legendary catalog. INSIDE THE ALBUM became available for download and streaming via Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, and all leading providers last week and is hosted by veteran producer/author Jesse Cannon (The Cure, Animal Collective, “Weird Al” Yankovic). Each episode will focus on one singular work covering how the record went from idea to reality and will include exclusive commentary, archival audio and Cannon’s insightful narration. Among the artists set to be featured are included Dashboard Confessional, Vance Joy, Brent Cobb, Wallows, nothing,nowhere., grandson, the award–winning creators of Atlantic’s Mean Girls Original Broadway Cast Recording, and multiple Grammy Award–winner Jason Mraz. INSIDE THE ALBUM joins Atlantic Podcasts’ existing popular debut podcast series, WHAT’D I SAY which features an inside view of the art of songcraft told though intimate interviews with a number of Atlantic’s current artists.

BMG Production Music (BMGPM) has expanded its footprint to Southeast Asia with several key new executive appointments bringing the number of territories with a BMGPM office to eight, with newly–dedicated operations in Hong Kong and Singapore, alongside existing offices in the U.S., U.K., Germany, France, Netherlands, and Australia (covering Asia–Pacific). Joining the BMGPM team as Director of Business Development (Asia) is Andy Wong, leading the production music team in Hong Kong and reporting to Andrew Jones, VP Production Music, Asia Pacific. Aiden Chan, Manager (Hong Kong), and Wesley Chan, Junior Account Manager/Music Supervisor, also join BMGPM’s Hong Kong offices. In Singapore, Jeff Long comes to BMGPM as Manager (Singapore, Malaysia), reporting to Andy Wong.

Longtime American TV music series, Austin City Limits, has grown its footprint to radio as it takes over Austin, Texas’ KGSR, rebranding to Austin City Limits Radio. The transition sees KGSR maintaining its call letters with branding updated to the new banner, as well as programming moving towards a more diverse offering, for which the TV platform is well–known, including acts performing across ACL’s event portfolio. The 5–year–deal sees KGSR paying Austin City Limits and KLRU–TV a licensing fee as well as splitting a portion of revenue from advertising with both platforms. The 28–year–old station, which is owned by Emmis Communications, will still maintain its own events including monthly summer concert series Blues on the Green and Unplugged at the Grove, it’s long–time weekly concert series.

Epic Records announced last week the signing of multi–platinum, multi–Grammy Award–winning artist/producer/actor/entrepreneur Tip “T.I.” Harris. At the same time, T.I. released new music across all DSPs with two brand–new tracks, “Jefe (feat. Meek Mill)” and “Wraith (feat. Yo Gotti).” T.I.’s 10th studio full–length, and first album in four years, Dime Trap, is scheduled for release later this year, and comes 15 years since the release of his breakthrough album, Trap Muzik, (which helped launch the popular hip–hop subgenre). With millions of albums and over 35 million singles sold, T.I. has received three Grammy Awards, 11 Billboard Awards, three BET Awards, and two American Music Awards, as well as additional honors. Collaborations include work with acts such as Drake, Beyoncé, Pharrell, Rihanna, Jay Z, Lil Wayne, Robin Thicke, M.I.A., Lady Gaga and Kanye West among others. Over the last decade, T.I.’s guidance of Grand Hustle Records has produced multiple breakout artists, including Iggy Azalea, Travis Scott, and others, as well as his purpose–driven 2016 EP Us Or Else courageously addressing police brutality and racial inequality in America. T.I’s work has also spread successfully to the film, fashion, books, scripted and unscripted television, technology, sports, lifestyle and real estate spaces as well as a number of social causes.

MelodyVR will join forces with Post Malone, Macklemore, Wiz Khalifa and Nicky Jam to bring fans an immersive and interactive virtual reality concert experience. Over the coming months, MelodyVR will offer up tickets to a number of international concerts for fans worldwide to join the live virtual events as they happen. The VR concerts open up another level of revenue for artists, promoters and venues who will be able to sell an unlimited number of tickets for a live experience that can be accessed anywhere. MelodyVR has already partnered with acts such as Fall Out Boy, Niall Horan, Blake Shelton and others.

Wow & Flutter, the supervision, sync and music publishing firm launched last year by former Universal Music Publishing Head of Film & TV Becca Gatrell, has revealed a round of new music supervision projects for 2018 including a range of new television projects across several platforms as well as two new films. Among the projects are included Hang Ups (Slam Films for Channel 4); The Innocents (New Pictures for Netflix exclusive); Vanity Fair (Mammoth Screen for ITV/Amazon), for which Gatrell has also produced the soundtrack album due for release later this month; The Hustle (MGM feature film); and Ray & Liz, a new independent movie by artist Richard Billingham, currently receiving acclaim at film festivals worldwide.

Sentric Music has rolled out RightsApp, a brand–new software and service platform that allows rights holders to register works, track royalties, manage their entire catalogue, boost revenue and collect earnings worldwide from one centralized hub. RightsApp is a white label platform available to anyone including artists, songwriters or other publishers. The platform requires no infrastructure set–up and automatically registers works worldwide using rights holders’ existing partners or RightsApp’s own direct collection network, encompassing over 100 of the world’s most active music markets. RightsApp also allows for the management of contracts and agreements, as well as identifying and managing any issues, disputes and counterclaims against a copyright using the platform. TuneCore marks the first company to become a RightsApp client.

Mac Miller
Pittsburgh rapper/singer/producer Mac Miller died Friday at the age of 26 as a result of an apparent overdose. Miller had recently been tried with two counts of DUI following a car crash in May and was open about his addiction struggles over the years. Miller signed to Rostrum Records in 2009 after releasing a number of mixtapes and successfully competing in local rap competitions. He experienced viral success and generated fans with singles such as “Donald Trump” and “Knock Knock” with his 2011 debut full–length, Blue Slide Park, debuting at No.1 on the Billboard 200 chart, marking the first independently–distributed album to reach the spot in the 21st century. Miller had released his fifth studio effort Swimming in August with Warner Bros. Records and saw the set reaching No.3 on the Billboard 200 making it his fifth consecutive top five debut.

The same year, his single “When We Do It” reached Gold status and was one of the most played songs on Swiss radio for 2017. His latest single, “Feel The Heat,” was picked as the official Swiss anthem for the FIFA World Cup 2018 and has also charted in the Swiss Airplay Top 20 and in the Swiss Single Charts. Tim Schou’s music has the introvert haunting soulfulness of Jeff Buckley, the positive playfulness of Ed Sheeran and the vigorous drive of Shawn Mendes. Tim has recently co–wrote and supplied vocals to Felix Jaehn’s “Millionaire” as well as Tim3Bomb’s “Magic,” which is currently rising high on the Russian charts. Tim returns with the brand–new track “Run Run Run Run Run,” which is packed with solid electro beats, catchy melodies and a lot of drive. The just–released video was shot in a Los Angeles mansion belonging to Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine, which depicts the contrast between cheerful lust and seriousness.
