La Roux
When Elly Jackson was strumming away at a house party one night, songwriter Ben Langmaid took notice. The two formed a friendship and began to jam in the studio together, working on electro and synth music. Elly and Ben worked together for over a year before news started to filter out to record labels that something special was happening. “Out of nowhere there was suddenly loads of interest,” Elly remembers. “But some of the labels wanted to split us up and wanted me to go and work with other people and I was like 'this is stupid, it doesn't make any sense, you said you loved the demos that we'd done together and then you wanna go rip it up and tear it apart, I don't understand how that works.’ We were both baffled by it. Just because he wasn't a known name in the industry or a known writer or producer, no one wanted to take the risk.” From that day on, La Roux was born, taking their name from a book of French baby names. The self-titled debut album was released in the UK on June 28th and entered the charts at No. 2 as the single “Bulletproof” entered the charts at No. 1. La Roux developed their early support in the U.S. with the help of A&R Worldwide.
