WARNER RECORDS UNVEILS JV WITH MARC BYERS’ PROTECT THE CULTURE

Protect the Culture, a new label founded by respected music industry veteran and entrepreneur Marc Byers, has entered into a worldwide joint venture with Warner Records. Byers will also serve as an A&R consultant for Warner Records, focusing on the vibrant African music scene. He will work closely with Steve Carless, President of A&R and Karen Kwak, Executive VP/Head of A&R.
Marc Byers

Grammy-nominated artist Lord Afrixana has made his debut on the newly created label venture with the new single “No Dey Tire.” The song offers a peek into the Ghana-born Massachusetts-based singer-songwriter’s upcoming solo project arriving later this year. You can listen to “No Dey Tire” HERE and watch the video HERE.

“Marc has already proven to be an invaluable A&R resource with the signings of breakout Nigerian artist Pheelz and afro-fusion rising star Lord Afrixana. We’re confident it’s just the beginning of what’s to come from Marc and Protect the Culture. Aaron Bay-Schuck, Tom Corson, and the team are excited to be championing such inspiring young talent from the electrifying African and world music scenes with passionate entrepreneurs, and we’re looking forward to all we can accomplish together,” said Steven “Steve-O” Carless, President of A&R, Warner Records and Karen Kwak, Executive VP/Head of A&R, Warner Records.

Following last year’s hard-hitting “Touchdown,” featured on the EA Sports Madden NFL soundtrack, “No Dey Tire” largely reflects – and speaks to – the African and Caribbean communities of Afrixana’s adopted hometown of Worcester, Massachusetts, where he’s lived since the age of nine. After years spent perfecting his craft, he began his professional songwriting career in 2015. Four years later he was writing songs with Beyoncé – with whom he co-wrote two songs for The Lion King: The Gift soundtrack – which earned him three Grammy nominations.

Since then, he’s had star-studded collaborations with artists like Pharrell Williams, Bebe Rexha, Tiwa Savage, and has been featured on the season 2 soundtrack of the Epix original series Godfather of Harlem alongside DDG with “No Favors” and the season 3 soundtrack with “Bad Guy.” He also co-wrote the smash hit summer anthem “Showing Off Her Body” by DaBaby & Davio.

Just over a decade ago, Dagny relocated from Germany to England, gradually amassing a modest following in Liverpool and later in London, yet without achieving significant breakthrough. However, everything changed dramatically upon the release of her single “Backbeat.” Within a span of nine months, the track amassed a staggering 20 million streams on Spotify, a number that has since grown closer to 50 million. Dagny’s musical accomplishments include four nominations for the prestigious P3 Gull Song of the Year award, with her 2020 single “Somebody,” ultimately claiming the prize. This song dominated the Norwegian radio charts for an impressive 18 weeks and held the distinction of being the most played song on Norwegian radio throughout 2020 and 2021, currently boasting nearly 85 million streams on Spotify. Dagny’s 2020 debut album, Strangers/Lovers, received a warm reception from both fans and renowned music publications such as The Guardian, Billboard, Nylon, and BBC Music. Notably, Dagny’s vocal talents have been sought after by various artists, including her background vocals on Katy Perry‘s global hit “Never Really Over.” Moreover, she has contributed her songwriting skills to artists like Julie Bergan, Ashnikko, and Lemaitre, and collaborated with notable acts such as Seeb, Steve Aoki, The Wombats, and others. Last year, she released two singles, “Brightsider” and “Highs & Lows,” and joined forces with Norwegian superstar Kygo on “Lonely Together,” for which she also co-wrote the song. Currently, Dagny is dedicating time in Los Angeles to work on her sophomore album.
