WILLIAM HSIEH NAMED MANAGING DIRECTOR
UNIVERSAL MUSIC TAIWAN

Universal Music Greater China (UMGC), a division of Universal Music Group (UMG), recently announced the appointment of seasoned industry executive William Hsieh as Managing Director of Universal Music Taiwan, and Senior Vice President of UMGC, effective immediately. William Hsieh will be based in Taipei and will report directly to Timothy Xu, Chairman & CEO of Universal Music Greater China.

Boasting a diverse career spanning across music, sports, and gaming sectors, William joins UMG from Fiture, China’s leading interactive fitness tech firm, where he served as Vice President, Content. Prior to that, he was Group Vice President for Space Cycle, a boutique wellness studio chain that uniquely integrates music, community, and technology, where he acted as General Manager of Digital & Corporate Development. Additionally, he undertook a pivotal role as the Head of Regional Operations & Strategy at Electronic Arts Asia.

William’s journey in the music industry dates to 1993, when he took an internship with Sony Music Taiwan during his college years. Over the decades, he has taken on managerial roles at renowned institutions like EMI Music and Sony Music Greater China. His vast expertise encompasses areas from international and domestic repertoire marketing, artist management, and strategic business development.

Born in Taiwan and brought up in Southern California, William’s passion for music was evident from a young age, having been trained as a classical violinist. He holds a BA in comparative religious philosophy and economics from Columbia University, as well as an MBA from the Stern School of Business at New York University.

 


BMG’S RISE RECORDS SIGNS RECORDING DEAL WITH
MULTI-PLATINUM CANADIAN ROCKERS SUM 41

 

Multi-Platinum selling Canadian rock band Sum 41 has signed a new recording deal with Rise Records to release their forthcoming double album and final album release ever titled Heaven: x: Hell. Ahead of the release, the band have unveiled the first single “Landmines” with accompanying video.

Sum 41 will be performing on October 21 and October 22 at the sold-out When We Were Young festival in Las Vegas, NV with the band also performing a set at a sold-out When We Were Young Sideshow on October 20 at the Brooklyn Bowl alongside Bowling For Soup, Plain White T’s, Your Broken Hero, and others.

Sean Heydorn, Sr. Vice President, Rise Records & Frontline Catalog, said, “We’re ecstatic Sum 41 chose to partner with Rise/BMG on what will be the last chapter in such a storied career. The music is killer, the vision is clear… the band is going out with a bang and we’re happy to be a part of it.”

Looking back at the band’s storied 27-year career, SUM 41 have firmly cemented their place in rock history with over 15 million records sold worldwide, multiple Billboard charting releases, a Grammy Award nomination, two Juno Awards, a Kerrang! Award in 2002, multiple, Alternative Press Music Awards, and countless other accolades.

Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley said about the album’s first single, “When I wrote ‘Landmines’ I had no intention of writing an old school ‘pop punk’ song. It just came out really quickly and I knew right away that this song felt special to me.”

 


BRANDON SILVERSTEIN PUBLISHING & AVEX USA
SIGN GENT! TO PUBLISHING DEAL

 

Music producer GENT! has entered into a worldwide co-publishing agreement with Brandon Silverstein Publishing and Avex USA. GENT! is recognized for his collaborations with artists like Lil Yachty, Drake, 21 Savage, and Doja Cat, contributing to hit tracks such as “Privileged Rappers” and “Agora Hills.” This partnership will see GENT! join a joint publishing venture between Brandon Silverstein Publishing and Avex USA.

The joint venture already includes a roster of hitmakers like Jasper Harris, HARV, Cxdy, David Arkwright, Declan Hoy, and KOSA, who have collectively achieved over 12 billion streams across their catalog and secured three No.1 hits on Top 40 U.S. radio. Brandon Silverstein, CEO, Brandon Silverstein Publishing said, ​​“GENT! is one of the most exciting producers in music today with a sound all his own. I’m excited to be a part of his story alongside Dylan, Naoki and the incredible team at Avex USA.”

Avex USA, the American arm of Avex Group, is a leading music and entertainment company that bridges technology, music, finance, and global market markets.

 


POSITION MUSIC SIGNS JOE KEARNS
TO WORLDWIDE PUBLISHING DEAL

 

Joe Kearns has just inked a significant worldwide publishing deal with Position Music, based on an announcement by the company’s President & CEO Tyler Bacon.

Based in West London, Kearns has already amassed an extensive track record for his work on multi-Platinum records. He was an executive producer on Ellie Goulding’s album, Brightest Blue, where he also earned co-writing credits for several of the album’s tracks. This record has since achieved RIAA-Gold certification in the U.S. and marked Goulding’s third No.1 album in the UK upon its debut.

Kearns’s talent and expertise extend to collaborations with various artists, including Lukas Graham, Henry Moodie, Zara Larsson, IVE, Seeb, and MONSTA X, among others. With his signing, Kearns becomes part of Position Music’s burgeoning roster, which already includes artists, songwriters, and producers such as Judah & the Lion, Kyle Dion, Ryan Oakes, Kid Bloom, Jack LaFrantz, TeaMarrr, and others.

Position Music’s A&R executive Sam Sklar, who has known Kearns for over five years, praised him as someone with the unique ability to craft Top 40-worthy songs while remaining faithful to the artist’s vision.

Kearns is currently under the management of George Baker from the UK-based North Pole Management who joins A&R Worldwide’s esteemed private executive dinner in London tomorrow. North Pole’s clients include TMS, Phil Cook, LACONIC, Sakima, and more.

JACK HARRIS

 

Jack Harris, a talented artist and songwriter, has been making significant strides in his 2023 career. He notably supported acts like Tai Verdes, Lawrence, and COIN in 2022, and this year marked his growth by supporting K-Flay at The Gathering 2023 in Las Vegas, gaining national exposure through various media. Additionally, he made his screen acting debut as Eddie Cochran in the official Eddie Cochran documentary, Don’t Forget Me, produced by the award-winning U.K. film group  Goldfinch. Jack further expanded his songwriting career during the 2023 Chris Difford Songwriting Week, the same program that kick-started Dom Harrison’s (YUNGBLUD) songwriting journey. His enhanced social media presence has allowed him to connect with more fans than ever before, and he concluded a summer of live shows, headlining stages with a full band and opening for The Wallflowers. In his latest work, “Up Up & Away,” Jack delves into his tendency to overthink the future at the expense of the present, using the song as a reminder to prioritize the present moment over worrying about the future. Rising Thai artist Fyeqoodgurl, known for her unique blend of R&B and pop, recently dropped her fourth solo single, “Lowkeyy” via D.U.M.B. Recordings/Warner Music Thailand. The song’s relatable and infectious track is about unclear relationships according to Fye. This release follows her successful performance on Korea’s popular competition show Queendom Puzzle’s third season, where she made a strong impression. Fye performed “Lowkeyy” live for the first time at the Asia Song Festival 2023 in Seoul last month. Her music videos are known for their simple yet visually stunning aesthetic. Initially gaining attention in Asia and Korea through her covers, Fye’s journey led her to the show’s invitation. “Lowkeyy” represents a significant artistic step for Fye, marking a break from constraints and a clearer musical vision in English. SONY MUSIC PUBLISHING & CHUMBA MUSIC INK HITMAKER TO GLOBAL DEAL: Sony Music Publishing UK has announced its partnership with Chumba Music to sign renowned songwriter and producer Pablo Bowman Navarro to a global publishing deal. Navarro has achieved critical acclaim across this year thanks to his work on the No.1 hit “Miracle” by Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding, which spent an impressive eight weeks atop the UK Singles chart and helped the hitmaker achieve ASCAP’s coveted “Songwriter of the Year” honor at its 2023 London Awards. With over 7 billion total streams across his catalog on Spotify alone, his creative talent is showcased in many other hits including “The Motto” by Ava Max and Tiësto, “Leave Before You Love Me” by Marshmello ft. Jonas Brothers, “Numb” by Marshmello and Khalid, “Sacrifice” by Bebe Rexha, as well as “House on Fire” by Mimi Webb, which peaked at No.6 on the UK Singles chart. In addition to his work in the UK, Pablo, who is fluent in Spanish, has spent the past year working on new projects across Latin music with top talent including J Balvin and Tainy, as well as collaborating on projects in the U.S. and globally with Kid Cudi, Pnau, Empire of The Sun, Ava Max, Marshmello, London Grammar, Channel Tres, Emir Taha, Kamal and Nemahsis and more. 300+ CREATIVES JOIN WARNER CHAPPELL’S LAS VEGAS WRITING CAMP: Warner Chappell Music (WCM) recently hosted a global songwriting camp in partnership with YouTube Music, Warner Records, Atlantic Records, RCA Records, and other label sponsors. The event featured a diverse lineup of talented artists and songwriters from various music markets, including Chlöe, Danna Paola, Bebe Rexha, Yng Lvcas, P2J, The Proof, Lydia Night, Murda Beatz and Tay Keith, among others. The week-long camp facilitated collaborations across genres and markets, encouraging artists and producers to step out of their comfort zones. It was not only about music but also included educational sessions focused on the music publishing business and navigating the evolving landscape of the “new songwriter economy.” Ryan Press, President, North America, WCM, said the writing camp embraced a global reach and its role in fostering connections among songwriters. The event also featured an AI demonstration, exploring AI’s current and future impact on music creation.

 

VIRGIN MUSIC INKS HIP-HOP STARS TO GLOBAL DEAL: Virgin Music has announced that it has signed hip-hop supergroup Czarface to a global deal. Czarface consists of Inspectah Deck from Wu-Tang Clan, Esoteric, and 7L. Czarface originally emerged in 2013, but their collaboration history goes back to 1999 when they worked on their single “Speaking Real Words.” The group’s evolution from what they thought would be a one-time mixtape project to multiple albums, collaborations with acclaimed artists like MF Doom and Ghostface Killah, contributions to the Marvel movie Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and a diverse range of merchandise illustrates their creative prowess. Jacqueline Saturn, President, Virgin Music, helped broker the signing with Czarface.

 

BLACK COUNTRY, NEW ROAD SIGN WITH TRANSGRESSIVE PUBLISHING: Black Country, New Road, a UK based band, has signed a global publishing deal with Transgressive Publishing. Transgressive Publishing operates in partnership with Warner Chappell. Comprising of band members and writers like Charlie Wayne, Georgia Ellery, Lewis Evans, Tyler Hyde, May Kershaw, and Luke Mark, the collective has garnered critical acclaim and commercial success. Their 2021 album, For the First Time charted at No.4 on the UK albums chart and earned them a Mercury Prize nomination. Their follow-up album, Ants from Up There, released in 2022, also achieved a Top 3 chart position and found success internationally. Black Country, New Road is currently on a sold-out world tour, including a significant U.S. run, and has performed at major festivals like Glastonbury and Primavera Sound. The band’s upcoming London Shepherd’s Bush Empire shows have also sold out. The band is now working on a follow-up release with Ninja Tune.

 

BMG ACQUIRES JET’S RECORDINGS CATALOG: BMG has acquired the recordings catalog of Jet, the multi-Platinum and award-winning Australian rock band. This acquisition includes Australian and New Zealand rights to the band’s first two albums, Get Born and Shine On, and the global royalty stream for these albums indefinitely. Additionally, BMG now holds global rights to their third album, Shaka Rock. This deal builds upon Jet’s existing global publishing deal with BMG, which was signed in 2017. Jet is known for their iconic hits, including “Are You Gonna Be My Girl,” “Look What You’ve Done,” “Cold Hard Bitch,” and more. The band achieved global success with their breakthrough debut album, Get Born, certified 9x Platinum in Australia. Jet’s music has been featured in numerous advertising campaigns, films, TV series, and video games. Chris Cester from Jet stated, “We’re already with BMG for our publishing and they do what they say they’re gonna do. That’s a rare thing in this business.” BMG President for Australia, New Zealand, and South-East Asia, Heath Johns, called Jet a “generation-defining band” said the acquisition of Jet’s catalog as a significant milestone for BMG.

WK ENT’T FORMS PARTNERSHIP WITH HITS DONT LIE: Latin music management company WK Entertainment, helmed by CEO Walter Kolm, has forged a strategic partnership with producer Andres Castro’s Hits Don’t Lie. This collaboration has resulted in a co-management deal for Puerto Rican duo Zion & Lennox and Colombian artist Silvestre Dangond. Silvestre Dangond boasts a career spanning over two decades, with achievements including a Latin Grammy, Premio Lo Nuestro, and an ASCAP Award. His hit track “Ya No Me Duele Más” exceeded 150 million views on YouTube, while “Cásate Conmigo,” his collaboration with Nicky Jam, reached the No.1 spot on multiple U.S. radio charts. Dangond’s 14th studio album, Las Locuras Mias, led to extensive touring across various countries and a Latin Grammy win. WK Entertainment CEO Walter Kolm expressed his excitement about the partnership, Walter Kolm is a former President of Universal Music Latin Entertainment, and in 2020, he launched the Latin music label WK Records, which received investment from Sony Music in March 2022.

 

RICK ROSS & MAYBACH MUSIC GROUP STRIKE PARTNERSHIP: Gamma has formed a partnership with rapper and entrepreneur Rick Ross and his Maybach Music Group (MMG). This collaboration represents an expansion of Gamma’s artist, executive, and content portfolios. Rick Ross, a nine-time Grammy Award-nominated multi-Platinum artist and CEO of MMG, will release music and oversee multimedia projects as part of this partnership. Ross recently announced a new project with multi-platinum artist Meek Mill called “Shaq & Kobe.” Alongside Ross, Breyon Prescott, a longtime business partner and veteran label executive, producer, and artist manager, has joined Gamma. Prescott will serve as Executive Vice President, Content, identifying and signing talent to his Chameleon/Gamma imprint, as well as attracting multimedia projects to the company. Prescott has extensive industry experience, having worked with industry stalwarts like Clive Davis and L.A. Reid, and collaborated with artists such as Jamie Foxx, Drake, Kanye West, Yo Gotti, D’Angelo, and Angie Stone.

 

KRIS BARRAS BAND GET A GLOBAL EARACHE DEAL: The Kris Barras Band, led by former MMA (mixed martial arts) fighter Kris Barras, has inked a global record deal with Earache Records. Known for their British rock sound, the West Country-based band is working on their upcoming album in collaboration with producer Josiah J Manning. Barras hinted at a shift towards a heavier rock sound in their recent work and believes Earache is the perfect home for this evolution. Their new album, currently in the works at Vada Studios in Worcestershire, is expected to feature heavy riffs, powerful choruses, and some surprises. Earache Records, an independent label, has achieved notable success in the U.K. charts in recent months, with four Top 10 albums. This signing marks a new development for both the Kris Barras Band and Earache Records and the album is slated for release in spring 2024.

 

PRIMARY WAVE INKS MULTI MILLION DOLLAR DEAL WITH ESTATE OF P.F. SLOAN: Primary Wave Music has completed a multi-million-dollar deal to acquire the catalog of songwriter and musician P.F. Sloan. The acquisition encompasses Sloan’s publishing and writer’s share in his works, as well as his master royalty income. Sloan, who passed away in 2015, was a popular songwriter during the 1960s music scene in Los Angeles, known for collaborating with his songwriting partner, Steve Barri. Sloan and Barri’s compositions were performed by numerous renowned artists, including the Searchers, Jan & Dean, Herman’s Hermits, Johnny Rivers, the Grass Roots, the Turtles, and the Mamas and the Papas. His iconic anti-war song “Eve of Destruction” became a Billboard No.1 hit for Barry McGuire in 1965, and his song “Secret Agent Man,” famously recorded by Johnny Rivers, became the theme song for the 1960s U.S. TV show Secret Agent. The deal grants Sloan’s estate access to Primary Wave’s marketing team and publishing infrastructure, including sync opportunities, digital strategy, licensing, and film and TV production.

 

ANGRY MOB MUSIC GROUP SIGNS BAILEY BRYAN: Angry Mob Music Group, an independent music publisher, has inked an exclusive worldwide co-publishing deal with singer-songwriter Bailey Bryan. The agreement includes select works from Bailey, and all new works produced under her contract with Angry Mob Music. Bailey Bryan, based in Los Angeles, has garnered significant success in a short span, with hits like “MF” featuring 24Goldn. She hails from Washington State and has cultivated a unique style blending influences from ‘90s R&B, underground hip-hop, and refined country songwriting. Her latest EP, Sensitive Bad Bitch Music Vol. 1, showcases her evolving artistry. Marc Caruso, CEO, Angry Mob Music, said, “We love everything about her music, her process, and her authenticity through all she does. We’re excited to bring her into our family and build her career even further.” Ralph Torrefranca, Senior Director A&R, Angry Mob Music helped with signing Bailey Bryan to the company.

 

AUDOO APPOINTS NEW CHIEF COMMERCIAL OFFICER: Audoo, a company specializing in public performance royalty reporting through improved music recognition data has appointed Melanie Johnson as its Chief Commercial Officer. With more than two decades of experience in the music industry, Johnson will be responsible for overseeing Audoo’s global expansion and the adoption of its Audoo Audio Meter. Previously, Johnson worked at EMI Music Publishing, Facebook, and Sony ATV Music Publishing, gaining extensive experience in areas including business development, strategy, partnerships, licensing, and sales. Audoo recently announced a partnership with PRS For Music and PPL as part of its efforts to enhance the global standard for music royalties. The company’s technology involves installing Audio Meters in various businesses to improve the accuracy and transparency of public performance royalty data collection, benefiting music creators.
