NEW LEADERSHIP CHANGES AT TIKTOK
FOR U.K., IRELAND & SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA

TikTok has revamped its senior leadership team in the U.K. with two key promotions. Toyin Mustapha has been appointed as the new head of music partnerships for the U.K. & Ireland, and Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Nichal Sethi has been tapped to lead SoundOn across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). SoundOn is the music marketing and distribution platform launched in 2021 by TikTok. It provides song distribution and artist services and allows users to upload music directly to TikTok to earn royalties while allowing them to retain their copyright on the music.

The two new hires mark a shift in TikTok’s U.K. leadership landscape after the departures of Paul Hourican (Global Head of Music Operations) and David Mogendorff (Head of Artist Partnerships).

Nichal Sethi said, “After just over two-and-a-half years at TikTok, I am happy to announce that I will be stepping into a more expanded role as head of SoundOn EMEA. Having managed all areas of the U.K. business for the last two years, I am excited to continue growing SoundOn in Europe, the Middle East, and Sub-Saharan Africa, building upon the many successes we have had since launching in various markets while opening and growing in new territories.” Mustapha who will spearhead support for U.K. talent at various stages of their careers, added, “The TikTok ride continues. I am happy to share that I will be moving back into music partnerships to lead our efforts in the U.K. & Ireland, and SSA. It has been an incredible journey so far, that started in a coworking space almost six years ago to where TikTok is today and the role it plays in getting artists’ music heard.”

These recent executive promotions at TikTok come on the heels of last week’s announcement that Charlotte Stahl has been elevated to Head of Artist & Label Partnerships EMEA. Previously, Stahl served as TikTok’s Head of Music Operations DACH since October 2022, and before that, she was an Artist Relations Manager. She originally joined TikTok in August 2020. In her new position, Stahl will oversee TikTok’s music partnerships team across Europe (excluding the UK), as well as the Middle East and North Africa.

HOOK SIGNS DEAL WITH DOWNTOWN TO MONETIZE FAN REMIXES: Hook, the AI-powered social music app that enables fans to create authorized remixes, has struck a content partnership with Downtown Music. This deal will integrate millions of Downtown’s licensed recordings into Hook’s platform and offer a new revenue opportunity for Downtown’s international network by compensating for user-generated remixes of their tracks. Also, Downtown Music, through its various sectors, supports over four million artists and 5,000 business clients in 150 countries. As discussions continue about the financial impact of short-form and social media content on music, Hook seeks to help artists and rights-holders optimize the value of their music on platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube. Hook employs advanced AI technology to facilitate the creation of custom remixes from licensed music, ensuring that artists and rights-holders are appropriately compensated. A recent Pex study highlighted that around 40% of the music featured on TikTok is altered in some manner – whether by adjusting speed, pitch, or blending with other tracks. Scheduled to enter beta testing next month, Hook was designed to address the challenges of compensating rights-holders for user-generated content and tracking its usage. In addition to paying for UGC remixes, Hook will provide artists and labels with insights into how their remixed tracks are being utilized. Gaurav Sharma, Founder & CEO, Hook, who has been appointed to lead this initiative, previously served as Chief Operating Officer at JioSaavn, India’s premier music streaming service. Under Sharma’s leadership, JioSaavn expanded to over 100 million active monthly users and secured global streaming licenses with major record labels.
