Missy Higgins

The Story

A&R Worldwide and Sat Bisla served as the vital bridge that connected Australian sensation Missy Higgins to the U.S. major label system, transforming a local Triple J “Unearthed” talent into an international priority. Long before she became a household name, Higgins was brought to the attention of both her manager, John Watson, and Sat Bisla by Robert Scott (formerly of Triple J Radio), who recognized her raw potential after she won a national demo competition with a rough cassette tape.

Recognizing the global appeal of her songwriting, Sat Bisla began an aggressive representation of Higgins in the United States as early as September 2001. His early advocacy directly led to her first major American radio champion, Chris Douridas at KCRW Los Angeles. The atmospheric buzz created by A&R Worldwide to the music industry, and its personal outreach to record labels, and music publishers, and the subsequent showcases organized by A&R Worldwide became the catalyst for a high-stakes pursuit by the U.S. major label community.

Manager John Watson noted that the momentum generated by Bisla was the deciding factor in bringing Higgins to Los Angeles in January 2002 for a definitive radio session. Watson stated, “There is no doubt in my mind that we would not have showcased Missy Higgins in Los Angeles without the interest Sat Bisla [A&R Worldwide] had done so much to generate, which led to the label interest from Warner Bros. and many others.”
