A&R Worldwide Exposed

Each week, A&R Worldwide shares a snapshot of creatives and executives that we have collaborated or worked with in various music markets around the world, albeit in recent or previous times!

Pictured (L-R) at an A&R Worldwide dinner event late last year are Michael Mancuso, Co-Founder & Executive Vice President, The Hello Group; William D. Simon, Sr. Client Partner & Managing Director, Media, Entertainment & Convergence, Korn Ferry; the late Phil Quartararo and Taylor Jones, CEO, The Hello Group.

This week, we’re heartbroken over the recent passing of our dear friend, supporter, colleague, and an inspiration to many in the U.S. and around the world – the legendary and beloved Phil Quartararo. Phil was the President & Chairman, The Hello Group, a company helped oversee with his close friend and business partner Taylor Jones, CEO, The Hello Group. Phil and Taylor had an incredibly close professional and business relationship, whereas Phil was like a father figure and mentor to Taylor. Before joining The Hello Group, Phil spent many years as a highly respected and trusted executive with roles as CEO at Virgin Records, Warner Bros. Records, and EMI, and was involved in the careers of recording artists such as Linkin Park, Josh Groban, Spice Girls, Paula Abdul, U2, and Japanese music icon Yoshiki. Phil was also on the advisory boards of several companies including Songtradr.

Sat Bisla, President & Founder, A&R Worldwide / MUSEXPO stated, “Phil possessed a rare gift – the power to make you feel truly acknowledged in the most authentic and respectful manner possible. His charm, self-effacing nature, and unwavering politeness were constants in a world that often changes too rapidly. From the late 90s when I first had the privilege of meeting him, right up until a couple of months ago when he and I last spoke, Phil remained the same incredible human being who left an everlasting impression over 25 years ago. In a music business sometimes fraught with pretense, and fair-weathered friends, Phil was the real deal—an incredibly genuine soul who touched the lives of those around him.”

A&R Worldwide Artist Of The Week

HIGH TROPICS

Introducing High Tropics, the indie-rock band based in Kabi Kabi/Sunshine Coast of Australia, with the retro-feeling single, “Girlfriends.” Produced by the artist and mixed by Steven Schram (Paul Kelly, San Cisco, Teenage Dads), the tune is a captivating indie-rock piece that weaves a tale of heartbreak within a sun-soaked soundscape. The infectious combination of guitar leads, and vocal melodies creates irresistible hooks, complemented by rich hi-hats and cymbals that enhance the overall atmosphere. The song’s chorus offers a message of hope, making it a compelling listen. High Tropics, a 2023 finalist in the Queensland Music Awards for their previous single “Bipolar Disaster,” has a history of recognition, with their 2018 single “Changes” nominated for “Song of The Year.” Additionally, the band represented Australia in Seoul, South Korea, for Project Aloft Star in the same year. “Girlfriends” is a brilliant introduction for listeners to the talents of High Tropics, which you can listen to HERE. For additional in collaborating, or joining a management team internationally, publishing, and booking (ex-Australia), you can contact Josh Stewart at joshua.mark.stewart@gmail.com.

BMG UNVEILS PLAN FOR GROWTH: BMG recently unveiled a strategic restructuring plan aimed at fortifying its position and adapting to the evolving music landscape. The plan, spearheaded by Thomas Coesfeld, CEO, BMG, focuses on two key service areas: music publishing and recordings. A significant shift involves establishing a global catalog function in Los Angeles, reinforcing BMG’s presence in the US. The European strategy adopts a ‘hub-and-spoke’ model to renew frontline recorded business, emphasizing local expertise and global functions. BMG stated that it commits substantial investments to enhance artist services through technology and the myBMG ecosystem. The restructuring clarifies roles, fostering greater accountability for artists and songwriters. Coesfeld notes the seismic changes in the music industry, emphasizing BMG’s commitment to challenging conventions. The company aims to combine creative intuition with data-driven insights, maintaining a “local where necessary, global where possible” approach. BMG said its strategy encompasses direct distribution relationships with Spotify and Apple Music, streamlining interactions with artists.

MAJOR RECORD LABELS ANNOUNCE MICC: Prior to the November 30 opening of the United Nations’ Climate Change Conference (aka COP28), music companies Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, and Warner Music Group recently announced the establishment of the Music Industry Climate Collective (MICC), a new, music industry alliance to address the pressing challenges and profound changes in global climate. In a statement, MICC’s founding members said, “This initiative demonstrates what can be achieved when music leaders come together with a shared vision and commitment to sustainability. We welcome all to join us in reducing our industry’s carbon footprint by working together to ensure an environmentally responsible future for music and our planet.” The American Association of Independent Music (A2IM), the not-for-profit trade organization representing a community of more than 600 independently owned record labels operating within the U.S., has been named as an advisor to MICC. MICC is looking to A2IM to assist with several issues, beginning with recommendations on how best to include small-to-medium-sized businesses by connecting the indies’ critical perspective to the initiative. In a significant step towards addressing music’s environmental impact, MICC’s first initiative will be the deployment of comprehensive sectoral guidance for measuring scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions. For the music sector, most greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are in scope 3. Scope 3 refers to indirect emissions that occur in the value chain, such as those from product manufacturing, distribution, and licensing. However, the Greenhouse Gas Protocol ‒ the internationally accepted method for companies to account for value chain emissions ‒ does not provide guidance for measuring the indirect emissions specific to the music industry’s nuanced and complex ecosystem. MICC’s member companies are also members of the Music Climate Pact, which sets out the music sector’s commitments to combat climate change. The member companies are committed to continued collaboration promoting sustainability within the music sector, including fostering partnerships and sharing knowledge and emission reduction strategies while promoting innovation.
