WARNER MUSIC GROUP ANNOUNCES MAJOR EXECUTIVE RESTRUCTURE

Warner Music Group (WMG) recently announced that it was implementing a significant executive overhaul, with Max Lousada, the CEO of Recorded Music, set to step down at the end of September. Lousada, who has led the recorded music division for eight years, will continue as an advisor until January 31. After that date, his position, along with the role of President of international, will end.

Pictured (L-R) are Max Lousada, Julie Greenwald, and Elliott Grainge

In the wake of this change, Julie Greenwald, who has been a key figure at Atlantic Records and Atlantic Music Group as co-Chair and CEO, will assume the position of Chairman of Atlantic Music Group, reporting directly to Robert Kyncl, CEO, WMG. Elliot Grainge, founder of 10k Projects, will step into the role of CEO of Atlantic Music Group effective October 1, also reporting to Kyncl. This restructuring will bring 10k Projects under the Atlantic Music Group umbrella, which includes Atlantic Records, Elektra, and 300. Warner Records, managed by Aaron Bay-Schuck, co-Chair & CEO, and Tom Corson, co-Chair & COO, will now also oversee Warner Music Nashville, along with Nonesuch and Reprise.

Robert Kyncl

The shifts at Warner Music Group mark a generational transition, particularly at Atlantic, where Greenwald had served alongside Craig Kallman, who will now focus on A&R at Atlantic Records. Greenwald’s new role is part of a broader leadership shift. Grainge, who joined Warner less than a year ago after moving 10k Projects from Universal, will continue to drive the label’s success following his achievements with artists like XXXTentacion, Trippie Redd, and Ice Spice.

The changes reflect WMG’s aim to cut costs and streamline operations into a “flatter structure,” enhancing central global operations. Moving forward, the heads of global catalog, marketing, and distribution through ADA, and the fan and merchandise division WMX will report directly to Kyncl.

Simon Robson will lead EMEA, encompassing Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, while Alejandro Duque will remain in charge of Warner Music Latina. A new division head for Asia Pacific will be announced soon.

Max Lousada, stated, “Over the past two decades, we created something special together at Warner: a music company built for artists, where original voices are championed, where their creativity is honored and protected, and where superstar careers are ignited. I am proud to have grown a world-class team who share that vision and whose enterprise and energy have brought in new labels, rebuilt iconic brands, expanded our global network, and pioneered new fan experiences. The music business has always been about evolution, and the time has come for me to build something new. I will be helping the team through this transition, and I have no doubt they will continue to develop artists who move the world.”

ANDRE HERD ELEVATED TO VP A&R AT APG

A&R Worldwide can reveal that Andre Herd has been promoted to Vice President of A&R at APG, a significant milestone that underscores his growing role in shaping the company’s contemporary music roster. Herd’s ascent is a testament to his growing trajectory and industry acumen, which he has showcased since joining APG in 2020.

Andre Herd

Starting as Director of A&R, Herd quickly made his mark by leveraging his extensive experience and network. His previous role as manager of JP Saxe proved instrumental, particularly with the Grammy-nominated hit “If the World Was Ending,” a collaboration with Julia Michaels that captured multi-faceted success. During this period, he also contributed to A&R efforts at Arista Records, working with respected executive and A&R legend David Massey.

Before APG, Herd honed his skills at Unrestricted/Songs Publishing, where he played a crucial role in placing the chart-topping hit “Stay” by Zedd featuring Alessia Cara. His tenure there included working with a diverse roster, including Chromeo, XXXTentacion, and Demi Lovato, highlighting his versatility and keen ear for talent.

Herd’s career began as a songwriter and artist, with a formative internship at APG in 2015. It was here that he discovered ARIZONA, a band that would go on to achieve multiple Gold and Platinum singles. This early success foreshadowed his future achievements and his ability to spot and nurture emerging talent.

At APG, Herd has built a thriving department, representing an eclectic and promising roster that includes 6arelyhuman, Lexi Jayde, Tommy Newport, bludnymph, and Flawed Mangoes. Also, Herd has been working with producer WZRD BLD, known for his impressive sixteen No.1’s at U.S. Rock radio, and is signed to APG’s publishing division.

HYBE RESTRUCTURES GLOBAL BUSINESS

HYBE has announced a major overhaul of its global operations. The company recently revealed that Jiwon Park, who had held the position of CEO for the past three years, is stepping down. Jason Jaesang Lee, formerly the Chief Strategy Officer, is now the newly appointed CEO. The transition in leadership is part of HYBE’s “ongoing leadership initiative,” which began in early 2024. This shift is aimed at advancing the “HYBE 2.0 strategy,” with Lee positioned as a key executive in this new direction.

Jason Jaesang Lee

On August 1, HYBE detailed its HYBE 2.0 strategy in a letter to shareholders, describing it as a comprehensive “strategic direction and business plan” designed to enhance the company’s competitive edge in the long run. This strategy includes a complete overhaul of business structure and governance. One major component of HYBE 2.0 is the establishment of a new division, HYBE MUSIC GROUP APAC, which will manage the company’s music labels in Korea and Japan. Young Jae Shin, currently President of BIGHIT MUSIC, has been named as the President of this new division. Shin will focus on advancing HYBE’s multi-label system and enhancing its understanding of artists and fans.

In the U.S., HYBE will introduce a new label services arm under HYBE AMERICA. This initiative aims to merge traditional management practices with HYBE’s strengths in live performances, distribution, and promotion, offering a holistic model to support artist growth beyond typical recording or management contracts. Scooter Braun will continue as CEO of HYBE America, a role he has held since the 2021 acquisition of his company, Ithaca Holdings, by HYBE.

In Latin America, HYBE LATIN AMERICA is currently focused on building infrastructure and scouting talent, with plans to introduce its first artist developed through the K-pop system next year. HYBE’s expansion into the Latin music market began in November 2023 with the acquisition of Exile Music.

In addition, HYBE is exploring new markets to further solidify its position as a leading IP-based content company. This includes enhancing content production capabilities and identifying emerging market opportunities.

Weverse, HYBE’s fan engagement platform, is set to level up its offerings with a new subscription-based membership starting in Q4 2024. This membership will include features like digital cards, ad-free content, and more. Weverse will also expand its private messaging service and integrate ads later this year.

U.K. INDEPENDENT SO RECORDINGS
CONTINUES TO GROW WITH NEW SIGNING

London, England-based indie alternative rock label So Recordings has been in a transformative stage in recent years under the leadership of its Managing Director Adam Greenup (a former entertainment lawyer turned music executive and A&R man) who has announced the recent signing of Public Service Broadcasting (PSB), who are on the cusp of releasing their new album, Last Flight.

Public Service Broadcasting

Reynold D’Silva, Chairman & Founder, Silva Screen Music Group, which So Recordings is associated with, tells A&R Worldwide that under Greenup’s stewardship, the indie label has had a dynamic evolution and impressive trajectory with both burgeoning and seasoned artists has become a haven for a diverse roster, including high-profile names like Placebo, Enter Shikari, Seasick Steve, Hamish Hawk, Deaf Havana, The Exies, Band of Skulls, Broken Hands, and many others, including the recently signed Public Service Broadcasting.

Public Service Broadcasting’s move to So Recordings is particularly notable. Previously under [PIAS], PSB’s Bright Magic album soared to No.2 in 2021, accumulating 24,458 sales according to the U.K.’s Official Charts Company. The band’s recent This New Noise, a live recording of their 2022 BBC Proms performance at London’s Royal Albert Hall, achieved a Top 30 result—a milestone Greenup describes as a crucial moment to build upon.

Expanding its reach, So Recordings is now targeting international markets including South America, North America, Japan, and India. The label’s sync team, part of the broader Silva Screen operation specializing in soundtracks, is poised to amplify PSB’s global presence.

The label’s success was underscored last year with Enter Shikari’s first No.1 album, A Kiss for The Whole World (25,422 U.K. sales to date). In addition, So Recordings’ collaboration with Enter Shikari is set to continue with their next album. Greenup highlights the label’s dual focus on nurturing new talent while working with established acts, citing Placebo and Enter Shikari’s record-breaking chart positions as evidence of this balanced approach.

The label’s appeal to established acts is partly due to its favorable terms and global perspective. Greenup attributes So Recordings’ success to strong relationships and a robust independent distribution network. Partners include Republic of Music in the U.K., [PIAS] in the Benelux region, Rough Trade in Germany, and Believe in South America.

In line with its global ambitions, So Recordings is also forging partnerships within the indie sector, including a recent alliance with boutique label Fierce Panda, which launched with Ash‘s Top 20 U.K. album, Race the Night.

The label’s efforts in developing new talent have been fruitful, with Big Special‘s debut album, Postindustrial Hometown Blues, cracking the U.K. Top 40 this year. So Recordings is expanding beyond rock and indie, with the addition of pop artist Emily Burns.

Greenup, who has been with the label for 15 years since its inception back in 2010, underscores the necessity of versatility and skill across the board. The label’s streaming income remains robust, bolstered by strong relationships with editorial teams and effective direct-to-consumer strategies through Townsend and Music Glue.

With a marked preference for physical sales, So Recordings U.K. garners 80-90% of week-one U.K. sales in physical format, with a notable increase in vinyl sales.

Despite the challenges faced by many independents in the U.K. and globally, So Recordings is in a solid financial position as part of Silva Screen, which will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2026. “Remaining 100% independent despite various offers is a testament to our spirit,” Greenup concludes, reflecting on the label’s enduring independence and success.
