Veteran Australian executive Dan Rosen has been appointed to lead Warner Music Group‘s (WMG) recorded music businesses in Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam), as well as continuing to have responsibility for its recorded music and music publishing businesses in Australia and New Zealand.

Dan Rosen

In his role as President of Warner Music Australasia & Southeast Asia, Rosen will continue to report to Lo Ting-Fai (known as Lofai), President, Warner Music APAC, and collaborate with a network of local experts across the eight territories.

The markets under Rosen’s leadership have a population of over 550 million people, with young passionate fanbases that engage heavily with music via digital services and social media. Some of WMG’s biggest stars generate up to a third of their worldwide streams in the combined region, and it also comprises many “trigger markets” with the power to propel artists up the global charts.

WMG is focusing its investment behind the most talented artists in the region, and strengthening its network of local partners, while offering accelerated access to its global ecosystem. The company is already successfully running more pan-regional campaigns, including for , dubbed “the Prince of Vietnamese indie music,” who will be undertaking the biggest-ever tour by a Vietnamese artist in Australia.

As part of WMG’s investment in the region, Warner Music Australasia is evolving its domestic artist structure. This will build on the team’s recent success of taking Aussie and Kiwi artists to the global stage, including Balu Brigada, Boy Soda, Budjerah, Kita Alexander, and Thelma Plum.

Lofai commented, “This region is richly diverse, full of extraordinary artists, talented entrepreneurs, and young enthusiastic fans, who are highly engaged with a booming music ecosystem. Breaking more artists and turbocharging our business here is one of WMG’s top global priorities. Under Dan’s skilled leadership, our artists will tap into both the economic value and weight of population across all eight countries, providing a powerful springboard to global fame and fortune. Change is never easy, but this is about doing something bold and winning big over the long term.”

Dan Rosen added, “Our mission has always been to find dynamic ways to help our local artists go global, and for our global artists to grow passionate local fanbases. I’m honored to lead a talented, focused team, and work with our amazing local partners, in these six diverse and exciting markets in Southeast Asia, while reinforcing our commitment to Australian and NZ artists. This move comes at an incredible time as there is a wealth of talent from this region that deserves a bigger global stage.”

Rosen will continue to lead Warner Chappell Music, the music publishing arm of Warner Music Group in Australia and New Zealand, while the publisher’s operations in Asia, including Southeast Asia, will still be run by Arica Ng, President of Warner Chappell Music APAC, with both reporting to Guy Moot, Co-Chair and CEO of Warner Chappell Music.

UMG STRIKES KEY DEALS WITH UDIO
& STABILITY AI ON MUSIC GENERATION TOOLS

Universal Music Group (UMG) has unveiled a new partnership with Stability AI, a leading independent company in multi-modal generative artificial intelligence. The announcement comes amid broader reports of ongoing AI licensing discussions between major record labels and tech companies.

This collaboration with Stability AI aims to create the next generation of professional music-making tools, driven by responsibly developed generative AI designed to enhance and empower the creative work of artists, producers, and songwriters around the world.

As part of the partnership, Stability AI’s research and product teams will collaborate closely with UMG and its roster of artists to explore innovative recording and composition methods, gain insight into creators’ needs, and better understand how musicians engage with emerging technologies. UMG continues to lead the industry in forging ethical and forward-thinking AI partnerships, having already signed landmark agreements with YouTube, TikTok, and Meta.

The company is also committed to protecting artists, songwriters, and rights-holders from unauthorized AI training and copyright misuse. Stability AI, known for its “commercially safe” generative audio models, has developed the Stable Audio suite, tools specifically designed for professional use and trained solely on licensed data to ensure responsible, high-quality sound and music generation.

Also, UMG has reached a settlement in its copyright infringement lawsuit against AI-driven music platform Udio, paving the way for a new strategic collaboration between the two companies. As part of the resolution, UMG and Udio will partner to launch an innovative platform for music creation, consumption, and streaming, expected to debut in 2026.

According to UMG’s announcement, the settlement not only resolves the legal dispute but also includes new licensing agreements for both recorded music and publishing. These agreements will open additional revenue streams for UMG’s artists and songwriters.

The development comes a year after the RIAA, representing the three major record labels, filed lawsuits against Udio and its competitor Suno, accusing them of “mass copyright infringement.” While UMG has now reached a deal with Udio, it continues to pursue its claims against Suno.
