U.S. EXECUTIVE SCOTT BORCHETTA EXITS HYBE TO RELAUNCH BIG MACHINE RECORDS

In a move that signals a return to his “scrappy indie” roots, Scott Borchetta is exiting HYBE America to relaunch Big Machine Records as an independent powerhouse.

In 2005, Scott Borchetta launched Big Machine Records with an independent spirit and an instinct for discovering stars. Over the next two decades, he guided the label to extraordinary success, developing some of the era’s most prominent artists and shaping Nashville’s modern music landscape. Following HYBE’s 2021 acquisition of Ithaca Holdings in a landmark $1.5 billion (USD) deal, Borchetta continued to serve as CEO of Big Machine Label Group under the HYBE umbrella.
Now, Borchetta is stepping into a new entrepreneurial chapter. With HYBE’s support, he will continue building the Big Machine Records brand independently, carrying forward its legacy while charting a fresh course. HYBE AMERICA will retain key assets, including the label’s distribution infrastructure, Big Machine Music publishing, and a portion of the current artist roster such as Thomas Rhett, Brett Young, Midland, Justin Moore, Carly Pearce, Preston Cooper, Jackson Dean, and Mae Estes. The Valory Music Co. will be folded into a newly named HYBE-operated label, with leadership details forthcoming.
Artists including Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts, Lady A, The Jack Wharff Band, Aaron Lewis, Cole Goodwin, MacKenzie Carpenter, and Riley Green will align with Borchetta’s new venture. The Nashville Harbor Records & Entertainment distribution agreement will remain with HYBE.
Borchetta will be joined by Sandi Spika Borchetta and 16 staff members, along with the Nashville Harbor team, operating from the existing Music Row offices. HYBE plans to establish its own standalone Nashville headquarters.
Additionally, Borchetta intends to launch a new publishing company, as Big Machine Music will remain with HYBE.

KOBALT SIGNS NEW ZEALAND DUO BALU BRIGADA

Kobalt has announced the signing of Balu Brigada, the alt-pop duo made up of brothers Henry and Pierre Beasley. Widely praised for their songwriting, production, and live shows, the New Zealand–born duo has emerged as one of the most compelling new acts in modern alternative pop.

Currently signed to Warner Australia/Atlantic, Balu Brigada released their debut album Portal on August 29, 2025. The album includes tracks such as “Backseat,” “So Cold,” and “Sideways,” each highlighting the duo’s knack for fusing polished pop sensibilities with raw storytelling. Their breakout single “So Cold” topped the U.S. Alternative Airplay chart at No.1 in 2024, while “Backseat” continued their momentum, reaching No.7 on the Billboard Alternative Chart and earning heavy rotation across alternative radio.
“We are thrilled to welcome Balu Brigada to the Kobalt family. Their rising global momentum makes Kobalt the perfect home, especially as our DNA has always been about working collaboratively across territories to help elevate our clients’ visions,” said Amanda Tufeld, Sr. Director A&R at Kobalt. “At their core, Henry and Pierre are exceptional songwriters and look forward to diving in together.”
“Signing Balu Brigada to Kobalt Music Publishing worldwide reflects everything we believe in – backing artists who are already resonating globally and partnering with management teams who understand their vision. The band have created an undeniable momentum through their music, cultural identity, and with their live show,” said Simon Moor, Managing Director APAC, Kobalt. “Our role now is to work alongside the band and their management, building on that success with fast global licensing, market reach, and expanded sync support to ensure their songs have the platforms they deserve around the world.”
The Kobalt deal follows a landmark year for Balu Brigada. In 2025, they were named one of SiriusXM‘s Future Five Artists, completed their first U.S. headline tour, selling out venues with capacities exceeding 1,200, and joined Twenty One Pilots as direct support on the U.S. leg of the Clancy World Tour starting in August 2024. The collaboration later expanded internationally, with additional dates across Latin America, the UK, and Europe.
ERN’S CADILLAC MUSIC HIRES DANE SCHMIDT AS SR DIRECTOR OF A&R AND ADDS TWO MORE EXECUTIVES

ERN’s Cadillac Music has named Dane Schmidt as Senior Director of A&R as the Nashville-based publishing company continues to grow its team with two new hires.

Schmidt, who previously ran his own creative management company Daschent, which has achieved over 25 No.1 hits since 2022, will oversee Cadillac Music’s roster of award-recognized songwriters, including Chandler Walters, Cody Lohden, Jacob Durrett, Mark Holman, Rafe Tenpenny, and Rhys Rutherford.
The company also welcomed Jordan Marcus as Creative Coordinator/Executive Assistant, formerly in live event production at Amazon, and Jude Warren as A&R/Executive Assistant, previously an intern at King Pen Music and Republic Records. Founded in 2023 by ERNEST in partnership with Big Loud Publishing, Cadillac Music continues to expand its influence in Nashville’s songwriting community.
Commenting on the appointments, ERNEST said, “Everybody on the team at Cadillac feels like family. I have known Dane for almost 12 years, and our journeys in the business started around the same time. He has always been so great with songs and relationships and adds so much value to our team. Jordan is a lovely addition and has stepped up in her role – constantly finding songs and putting rooms together. Jude started as my intern, but I knew immediately that I should hire him full-time. His ceiling is limitless. It is full circle and truly all in the family when it comes to the team we have curated.”
Schmidt added, “Absolutely pumped to join the Cadillac family. I have been fortunate to witness the evolution of Ernest as a songwriter, artist and now publisher: his ability for finding and mentoring talent has been both exciting and inspiring to watch. Beyond grateful to collaborate with him to champion great songs, the incredible talent behind them, and push the boundaries of what a modern publishing company can be!”

Over the years MUSEXPO has introduced numerous artists to the U.S. and/or global markets through its talent showcases. Whether its Katy Perry, LMFAO, Jessie J, Dave Lofts, Teddybears, Tom Gregory, Frank Turner, Robyn, The Temper Trap, Forest Blakk, Sheppard, Lime Cordiale, Jack Savoretti, Missy Higgins, Laleh, Gavin James, Birds of Tokyo, Avalanche City, Gin Wigmore, Smith & Thell, Ida Maria, Vella, or countless others who have taken the stage prior to their global success – MUSEXPO has always provided proactive industry, fans and others a chance to be the first to find the next great new music discovery, no matter what continent the artists come from.
An array of emerging talent from around the world is once again set to arrive at MUSEXPO from March 22nd – 25th. The opening night of unearthed global talent will perform at the legendary S.I.R. Studios on Sunset Blvd., followed by additional performances in the “Sync & Media Capital of The World” – Burbank, CA. Most of the talent is available for signing, licensing, booking, publishing, sync/brand partnerships, and/or legal representation.
Marking her global music industry showcase debut is the fearless, genre-defying singer, songwriter, actress, and multidimensional performer, Karin Ann from Slovakia, who is cementing her place as a dynamic, multifaceted artist unafraid to blend genres, mediums, and cultures through a signature vibe of indie, pop, folk, rock, and shoegaze. Music has always been more than melody for her – it is about message, meaning, and emotional truth. Her releases are not just standout tracks. They are complete stories, with each song chosen or written for the power of its lyrics and the narrative it conveys, drawing from the rich tapestry of her Central European and Middle Eastern heritage. Her debut album, through the telescope was released on May 10, 2024. NME called the release “a confident and unflinching debut.”
MUSEXPO will also feature the Nashville, U.S.-based, road-tested, arena-ready rock energy of James Bruner, who is poised to ignite the world of rock ‘n’ roll with his electrifying presence and intense heart for music. At just 24, this young man has already captured the attention of both fans and music insiders alike with his unique blend of artists like The Rolling Stones and Arctic Monkeys. His high-impact live performances and hook-driven anthems translate seamlessly across radio, touring, and sync opportunities. With a growing transatlantic following and a relentless work ethic forged on the road, Bruner stands poised to become a defining voice in contemporary roots-leaning rock.
Carissa Summer Rose, will mark her debut global music industry showcase at MUSEXPO. Carissa blends genres like indie and alt pop with confessional lyrics and an unforgettable voice. Her singles “Teleport,” “Living in the Moment,” and “Scatterbrain” bring in a new era of joy, playfulness, and bittersweet moments. With fun, infectious production and raw storytelling, she creates music that feels both deeply personal and universally relatable. With an authentic artistic presence and a gift for melody that lingers long after first listen, Carissa Summer Rose offers a compelling new voice for audiences seeking both heart and sophistication.
Hailing from the blue-collar town of Newcastle, England Nick Celino is more than a singer-songwriter with an impeccable soulful voice (blending elements of Barry White with Rag’n’Bone Man) – he’s a story of resilience, raw talent, and reinvention. From his debut on Britain’s Got Talent, where his bass-rich tone and larger-than-life presence captivated millions, to his current chapter as an independent artist, Nick’s journey speaks to anyone who has ever fought to be heard. Nick has collaborated with acclaimed songwriters and producers whose credits include Lana Del Rey, Sam Smith, and Alicia Keys. U.K. media legend Jools Holland has dubbed Nick with having a “Super Voice.” Recently, Nick has been in Los Angeles collaborating with Roy Hay, founding member of Culture Club, on his debut album, whilst also spending time back in the U.K. working with Boy George and Abbey Road alumni producers on original music in London.
With Puerto-Rican roots and global appeal the vibrant Latin-infused pop stylings of Cat Serrano, whose rhythmic flair and charismatic delivery channel the crossover appeal of Camila Cabello, Kali Uchis, and Rosalía. Fusing contemporary pop with Latin influences and authentic stage presence, her music is primed for international crossover, brand partnerships, and sync. Her debut single, “You Don’t Know Me,” released in March 2024, marked a defining moment in her emergence, earning early acclaim and positioning Serrano as an artist unafraid to lead with confidence and vulnerability.
Irish artist Shobsy, whose atmospheric production and emotive vocal delivery evoke the theatrical flair of David Bowie, as well as the soul of George Michael and Harry Styles, melded with the modern sheen of The Weeknd. His ability to fuse electronic textures with heartfelt songwriting creates a sound that is both intimate and cinematic. After a whirlwind few months including performances in Los Angeles and across Europe, signing an international publishing deal, signing to influential U.K. label SO Recordings, Shobsy released his debut EP ‘Own The Night‘ EP last Autumn. Dance Or Cry (the first release from the ‘Own The Night‘ EP) reached No.4 on the Irish Radio Breakers Chart and achieved significant airplay on Ireland’s most listened to station RTE Radio 1 and was ‘Track of the Week’ on RTE 2fm as well as being playlisted on stations such as Sydney Radio in Australia and on Radio Excalibur In Greece. With a breakthrough year that includes chart success and major live performances, Shobsy emerges as a distinctive new voice in forward-thinking pop.
Eva Gardner‘s journey began with legendary engineer and producer Andy Johns (Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton) who showed up at British Invasion bassist Kim Gardner‘s Hollywood Hills home with a tiny Pignose amp and a bass guitar. To Kim’s surprise, Johns handed the instrument not to him but to his curious teenage daughter, Eva. Cranking up Van Halen‘s version of “You Really Got Me,” he turned to her and said, “Now this is a solid bassline.” Eva never looked back. Even before collecting her diploma, Eva’s professional career was taking off as a founding member of prog-rock titans The Mars Volta, recording and touring with the band during its explosive early years. From there, she became an in-demand bass ace across the globe with artists including P!nk, Gwen Stefani, Cher, Tegan & Sara, Moby, and Veruca Salt. Now, Eva is stepping forward as a songwriter and bandleader, unveiling her own original music and live performances – a new chapter in a career defined by fearless collaboration and a distinctly individual voice.

TOVE STYRKE
After nearly four years away, Sweden’s Tove Styrke returns with “Prayer,” a luminous, defiant comeback that signals the start of a bold new era. Both intimate and expansive, the track unfolds as a five-minute alternative-dance odyssey, part affirmation, part invocation, glowing with anticipation and quiet power. It is the opening statement from her forthcoming album The Afterparty, due later this year, and an unmistakably confident re-introduction from one of pop’s most respected voices. Built entirely from live-recorded performances and analogue machines, “Prayer” leans into a richly tactile sound world of vintage synthesizers, live drums, and electric bass. The result is left-field pop at its most immersive: patient, hypnotic, and emotionally charged. Co-produced by Styrke alongside longtime Swedish collaborators Magnus Larsson, Joel Kiviaho, and Linnéa Martinsson, the track reflects a renewed creative freedom shaped by time away, motherhood, and a deep reconnection with nature. The response has been immediate. “Prayer” debuted as one of the most-added tracks globally on Spotify‘s New Music Friday, landed extensive playlist support across Spotify and Apple Music, and picked up early radio champions including BBC Radio 2, Sweden‘s P3, Passport Approved (globally syndicated radio show) KCRW in Los Angeles, and key tastemaker stations across Europe and Australia. Press support from FADER, NYLON, CLASH, The Line of Best Fit, and more has only amplified the sense that this is a major return. Listen to “Prayer” HERE, and reach out to manager Filip Wilén, Bud Fox Management, for available global opportunities and additional information pertaining to Tove Styrke.
Few bands captured the spirit of mid-2000s Britain quite like The Enemy. When they exploded onto the scene in 2006, the Coventry-based trio became instant torchbearers for a new generation of guitar music: loud, defiant, and proudly working-class. That momentum carried them to a No.1, Platinum-certified debut album with We’ll Live And Die In These Towns, followed by chart-topping successes Music For The People (No.2) and Streets In The Sky (No.9), plus years of sold-out tours, NME awards, and stages shared with icons like Oasis and The Rolling Stones. Now fully reunited, The Enemy return with “Trouble,” a muscular, no-nonsense single that finds the band sounding as urgent and clear-eyed as ever. Brimming with grit, melody, and that unmistakable sense of confrontation, the track reaffirms why their voice still cuts through, anthemic without nostalgia, confrontational without posturing. Its accompanying video leans into the band’s raw identity, capturing the tension, energy, and defiance that has always defined them. Following their split in 2016, frontman Tom Clarke kept the band’s legacy alive with solo touring before reuniting with Andy Hopkins and Liam Watts in 2022. The response was emphatic with over 40,000 tickets sold on their reunion tour, proving that demand for The Enemy never faded, it simply waited! Back home in Coventry, the bond remains unshakeable, with “We’ll Live and Die in These Towns” adopted as Coventry City FC‘s club anthem, cementing the band’s place in both music and football culture. Their songs’ continued presence across FIFA soundtracks and ITV‘s FA Cup coverage further underlines their enduring reach. As The Enemy set out on another sold-out U.K. tour and announced their fifth studio album, “Trouble” stands as a powerful opening statement, less a comeback than a reminder. Enjoy the visual for “Trouble” HERE, and contact Nick Bray for additional information and opportunities with The Enemy worldwide.

PRIMARY WAVE ACQUIRES BRITNEY SPEARS’ SHARE OF CATALOG: Primary Wave has reportedly struck a deal to acquire Britney Spears‘ share of her music catalog, with the agreement said to have closed on December 30 for approximately $200 million (USD), a figure comparable to the reported sale of Justin Bieber‘s catalog to Hipgnosis. The move adds to a sustained surge of high-profile catalog transactions in recent years involving artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Queen, and Pink Floyd. While full terms have not been disclosed, Primary Wave’s catalog investments typically encompass an artist’s share of publishing, recorded music royalties, and neighboring rights. The company has previously secured major deals involving the estates, or catalogs of The Notorious B.I.G., Whitney Houston, and Peter Green. Spears, who has sold an estimated 150 million records worldwide, released nine studio albums following her 1999 debut. Although she did not write many of her biggest hits, she holds co-writing credits on dozens of songs, including her collaboration with Madonna, “Me Against the Music.” Sony Music continues to control the rights to Spears’ recorded catalog. Primary Wave has not publicly commented on the reported acquisition.
CREATE MUSIC GROUP NAMES MITCHELL SHYMANSKY AS CHIEF DATA & TECHNOLOGY OFFICER: Create Music Group has named Mitchell Shymansky as its new Chief Data & Technology Officer, bringing on board a seasoned executive with nearly 20 years at Universal Music Group. Most recently, Shymansky led UMG’s Global Data & Analytics division, reporting directly to the company’s COO and overseeing its worldwide data strategy. During his time at UMG, he spearheaded a major transformation of the company’s data infrastructure, modernizing legacy physical-era systems into a cloud-native, multi-petabyte analytics platform capable of powering advanced insights. He also led the launch of Universal Music Artists, a data and analytics application for artists, and managed UMG’s global portfolio of data products, helping embed data-driven decision-making across marketing, commercial, and artist-facing teams. Shymansky also played a vital role in integrating AI and automation into analytics and marketing workflows, including partnerships with Google to enhance AI-powered tools. Alongside this, he built and directed a strategic analytics team that informed DSP negotiations and helped shape UMG’s global licensing strategy.
BELLA FIGURA MUSIC ACQUIRES PUBLISHING CATALOG OF JONNY PIERCE: Bella Figura Music has acquired the publishing catalog of Jonny Pierce, the songwriter, vocalist, and driving creative force behind The Drums. Since breaking out of New York’s indie scene in 2009, The Drums have carved out a singular space in indie pop, earning a devoted global fanbase with their blend of wistful lyricism, surf-infused guitars, shimmering reverb, and synth-led melodies. The deal covers Pierce’s publishing interests in songs released up to and including Encyclopedia, spanning key projects such as Summertime!, The Drums, and Portamento. The catalog features fan favorites including “Money,” “Let’s Go Surfing,” “Days,” “Down by The Water,” and “Forever and Ever, Amen,” among others. “Jonny Pierce has created some of the most enduring and influential songs in modern indie pop,” stated Alexi Cory-Smith, CEO & Founder of Bella Figura Music. “His ability to craft melodies that feel both immediate and timeless, combined with his distinctive lyrical voice, has made The Drums’ catalog a cornerstone of the genre. At Bella Figura, we are committed to a partnership-first approach, collaborating with all existing partners to ensure these songs continue to thrive for years to come. We are honored to be stewards of this remarkable body of work.”
SAM SIEGLER & MIKE NUCERO NAMED CREATIVE DIRECTORS AT TRUST RECORDS: Trust Records has named Sam Siegler and Mike Nucero as Creative Directors, formalizing a partnership that has helped define the label’s identity since its launch in 2020. Working under their design banner Easy Does It, the duo has shaped Trust’s distinctive visual language and storytelling approach, elevating its archival punk and hardcore releases while spotlighting the artists, scenes, and creative communities behind the music. Their work has fueled a series of collaborations with brands and cultural leaders including Vans, Brain Dead, NTS Radio, Beyond The Streets, Ian MacKaye, Ed Colver, Atiba Jefferson, Kat Moss (Scowl), and Pat Flynn (Have Heart/Fiddlehead). His career has also included roles within music, marketing, and artist management. UMG’S DOWNTOWN DEAL APPROVED BY EU: The European Commission has approved Universal Music Group‘s proposed $775 (USD) million acquisition of Downtown Music Holdings, subject to the divestment of Downtown’s Curve royalty accounting business. The conditional clearance concludes a regulatory review that began after Virgin Music Group first announced the deal in December 2024. Under the agreement, Curve Royalties will be separated and sold as a standalone company to a Commission-approved independent buyer, addressing competition concerns around access to commercially sensitive data. UMG had formally proposed the full divestiture of Curve, including its platform, assets, contracts, and most employees, in December. With approval granted, UMG can move forward with acquiring Downtown’s other businesses, including FUGA, CD Baby, Songtrust, and Downtown Music Publishing, significantly expanding Virgin Music Group’s global services for independent artists and labels. Nat Pastor and JT Myers, Co-CEOs of Virgin Music Group commented, “Bringing Downtown’s exceptional team and capabilities to Virgin Music Group means greater flexibility and a sharper set of services for independent entrepreneurs, artists, and labels. By uniting two culturally compatible companies with deeply complementary strengths, we are creating a more powerful, more open ecosystem that offers independent entrepreneurs’ resources, investment, and technology to succeed on their own terms. We appreciate the European Commission’s thoughtful review and look forward to welcoming our new Downtown partners and colleagues as we continue to empower the independent community together.”

He joined WME in 2010 and went on to represent a broad and varied roster across his time at WME, UTA, and CAA, including Alexis Jordan, Angel Haze, Mindless Behavior, Pia Mia, Tinchy Stryder, and Section Boyz, later adding hip-hop icons Run-DMC to his client list. Co-founded with Scout Creatives and headquartered in London, HAUS23 launches with what it describes as a “diverse and growing roster.” Initial signings include Angel, Dutch & Graft of The Manor, Mindless Behavior, Pure Garage, and Liam C, who currently sits at No.5 on Spotify‘s Viral 50 chart. Billy Wood said, “After Covid, I was burnt out. I stepped back, took a gamble, and gave the sport I love a real go. We had some enormous success, but I never lost touch with the music world – promoters, label executives, and fellow agents. I was still getting calls from former clients and artists looking for advice. The bug never left me. That break has made me hungry again, in fact excited. After meeting Alex and Tom at Scout Creatives, it was evident they believed in my vision, and I am excited to be working with them in delivering Haus23.”
